Just because a script is great doesn't mean the film will be.

And I confirmed with an entertainment writer that most of what he read of the script made it to the film.

Guess it didn't translate well? IDK, I didn't read it/see it yet.

Or maybe TDS isn't the most reliable source about what a great script is?

This was definitely a very hot script, Blacklist, etc.

It was a good run of space movies beginning with Gravity and then we were getting too many of them but they all had good reviews until the Passengers

Passengers and Life will feel the brunt of the space boredom movement. Hopefully studios take note of these casualties and stop producing space movies for a while.

If by talk for a year and a half you mean he wrote one post saying he read a good script, then yeah.

You know this is the script that got Spaihts PROMETHEUS, right?

Everyone in town loved this script. It's why people kept trying to make it, even though it was going to be hugely expensive.

A colleague of mine who read the script told me that there is at least one crucial difference between the original script and the actual movie.

The original script had
Spoiler: show
all the passengers in hibernation dying and the two main characters basically serving as Adam and Eve for the new planet.

Just because people loved it doesn't mean it's a good script. God only knows that there has been shit made from the Black List scripts and there's no way those movies were even good in script form. The town is very prone to its own hype. If one person loves something then probably a dozen more will love it because of that person. That's why the town is very slow to realize its mistakes and they make them repeatedly. Especially when they're trying to make an actor/actress become a star and people just never warm up until one day the town just gives up.

Sure, but that doesn't change the fact the script was beloved, nor the fact that I loved the draft I read in 2009.

I haven't seen the film yet, so I don't know what was changed, if anything.

'Passengers' Review: Film Critics Are Lying To You

Spoiler: show
Quote:
After a year, as one character explains, Jim becomes a desperate drowning man willing to take someone down with him. Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) is a journalist minding her own business in her own sleep pod when a desperate and suicidal Jim, not without some soul-searching, decides to condemn her to his own fate. He wakes her, lies to her about it being a malfunction, watches her panic over her desperate predicament, and then wins her heart.

And it is at this point where a number of film critics flipped out and doomed "Passengers" to a horrific and unfair 30% score at Rotten Tomatoes.

The Guardian sums the reactions up nicely:
Quote:
It’s a fantastically creepy start, and while Lawrence and Pratt undeniably possess the magic spark of on-screen chemistry, the basic creepiness of this anti-meet-cute extinguishes what the film-makers presumably are hoping is a warm fuzzy glow of spiky, sparky interaction. Stalking tactics bolstering romantic comedies are by no means new, and over the decades, film-makers have proved adept at somehow planing down real-world nastiness, but here it’s gruesomely inescapable.
This is absurdly unfair, especially because the movie agrees with these "triggered" critics.

Jim's act is not only presented as creepy and hideously immoral, but by committing it he is turned into a pathetic character. The story does not use Jim waking Aurora as a meet-cute or plot device, and "Passengers" is not a romantic comedy. Yes, it is a big, Hollywood blockbuster, but one that is "about" and takes very seriously the moral and ethical dilemma presented by Jim's unspeakable decision.

Yes, what Jim does is immoral, but the movie is not. There is nothing wrong with exploring unethical behavior, and in doing so, you don't have to turn the perpetrator into a mustache-twirling villain. Hollywood does this all the time with the truly evil, like terrorists and child molesters, and all the same critical class condemning "Passengers" praise this as sophisticated nuance. Moreover, at the end -- how do I put this without giving anything away? -- what happens to Jim, is fitting and just. He pays for his crime.

Maybe what's really irking these left-wing critics is the fact that Jim is a rugged, masculine working class fella who cuts the urbane, Manhattan writer down to size a notch?

Social justice zealots (the same ones who got Trump elected) are posing as film reviewers. Under their regime, they would have movies be reduced to confict-free pablum where characters operate from only the most morally pure motivations.

Don't believe it? How about this review's choice bit of reductio ad absurdum:
