Sin City A+
I actually saw this opening day. Very good movie it was like watching a comic book come alive and I loved that.

Thoughts on a few recently-viewed films:
Closer: A
Like I said before, although I still think the film is at times pretentious rather than insightful and stylized (dialogue, all the deception) rather than peceptive, the stylization, paired with the wonderful acting and flawless narrative, works so well that I can forgive the film for its pretension and look at it solely as a fascinating work of dramatic, artistic cinema. Natalie Portman and Clive Owen are, of course, striking, and Jude Law is good at being obnoxious, but I was surprised that I found myself most impressed by Julia Roberts. Not saying that she's the best of the four (I'd still say Owen is), but she's subtle, never overdoes it, and plays her character with a quiet intensity that none of the other three really develop. The use of music (or actually lack thereof) is also fantastic, with "The Blower's Daughter" only played twice (the second of which - the film's last scene - I think is the best in the entire film) and interludes of Damien Rice's "Cold Water" making up the only cues in the film. I loved it. Lurrrved it.
Vera Drake: A-
I'm going to be all cliched here and do the whole 'one word to describe this film' thing: rich. Imelda Staunton is fantastic (try and blame her character as an abortionist after seeing her performance) and Mike Leigh perfectly (and, it seems, pretty effortlessly) creates the setting of dreary 1950s London. I have to blame the film for ending on a note that I felt was rather inappropriate and rather disconcerting to its subject, however.
Boys Don't Cry: A-
I felt more disgusted than moved by the end of the film (for comparison, I actually think Monster did a better job in that department), but that emotion, nontheless, is so strong that I have to give it credit for at least affecting me that much. Million Dollar Baby is a better film, but I think Hilary Swank gives the stronger performance here.
American Psycho: B-
Funny and intriguing but too self-assured that its whole 'indictment of the 80s' thing actually makes for a compelling message.
I also just watched Waking Life, which I'll give thoughts on later.

Recently watched movies:
Anaconda - C
Not bad for a monster flick, but I hated the music. Way too overdone. With a little more suspense the piece could have gotten good enough. Some nice shock effects and a pretty J-Lo in the beginning. At least some eye candy.
Chinatown (by Roman Polanski) - B
Movie of the Murder Mystery type - early thriller. I actually watched that film twice in a row, it's a very long and quiet movie. Jack Nicholson is main actor, and does a good performance, the others not so much. The film doesn't leave too big an impression, but it's got some little pearls that give me the feeling like I really delved into a country and age which I don't know very well but would have liked to experience. I guess some might think the film is tedious, but I think it's actually well paced. It's one of those movies which you could stop watching after an hour but not because it's bad but because there is more substance in this one hour than in a whole "normal" film.
Kafka, the movie - A-
This is one of my favourites ... a film that mixes the biography of Kafka with some of his novels, forging a new story. Very good actors, and a creepy athmosphere. But I like it ... especially because of the soundtrack, very athmospheric without making me nervous and edgy. I probably like it so much because of the culture ... it reawakens an age and culture which hasn't left many traces in most modern movies. I also like its simplicity ... although there is also a mystery plot the main focus on human tragedy remains clear.

BEAUTY SHOP - 7/10 (B-)
Well, I don't understand where the praise from my teacher is coming from but oh well. It was fun for what it was, parts were actually quite funny. It wasn't as good as the original BARBERSHOP but it was so much better then BARBERSHOP 2. I'm sure I'll buy this when it comes out on DVD just so I have a really fun movie to watch.
MISS CONGENIALITY 2: ARMED AND FABULOUS - 8/10 (B+)
Wow, I thought this was supposed to be an awful movie? I thought it was absolutely hilarious! I almost never crack up in mainstream comedies but this is one that I most certainly did and it was more then once. Sandra Bullock was great, my lord did she turn into a bitch in the movie! I just wanted to punch her. Ragina King was great, I really like her. She was amazing in RAY and really fun in MISS CONGENIALITY 2 and LEGALLY BLONDE 2. Overall, this wasn't needed at all but I'm glad it was made. It's a fun, loveable, cute flick.
Rewatches:
21 GRAMS - 9/10 (A-)
THIRTEEN - 9/10 (A-)
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW - 6/10 (C+)
THE EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING - 8/10 (B+)

lol, yeah that didn't seem right.
Anyways, I thought this movie was BAD. Terrible CGI, laughable storyline, and its just dumb. It's not meant to be serious, but the stunts that the girls pull off are just so unrealistic. It's the kind of film where you have to suspend belief, but I did not like it. I actually think the original is better.

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle - B-
Didnt like it as much as I did the first time I saw it, still pretty funny though.
Love Actually - B+
Thought this film was great. Characters were nicely thought out giving variety. Had some great laughs as well. Only fault was that there were too many characters to focus on, and some characters (kiera knightley) didnt have enough detail. Apart from that, this movie is well worth seeing imo.
