Post If you could live in any city in the world...
...which would it be?

(Putting aside the cost of living there of course)

Now I do like where I am now. It is fairly close to the top, maybe right outside of my Top 3. But my #1 has been the same for many years and will probably never change: London. Love that city.

I like the city I live in best (The Hague), but because long distance relationships can suck, I'd pick Fort Worth Texas out of convenience.

The Hague is nice, though I think I preferred Rotterdam. Delft is cute.

Not sure I'd trade where I live (Victoria), honestly. I wouldn't pick anywhere in theDonaldLand and overseas is annoying for time zone and language reasons. Victoria is pretty much the perfect size for me as a city but walkable, great aesthetic in both buildings and land/water, and 0 C is about as cold as it gets in the winter. Also on the hipster/artsy friendly side which I like. I liked Portland and Seattle when I visited. Belgium (Mechelen) is my favorite place in Europe but as beforementioned it would be complicated to live there

NYC is where I wanted to live when I was younger and where I've been for 10 years now. There are moments when I hate it but it's home and I can't really see myself anywhere else at this point.

Yeah, the prices scare me. I don't understand how anyone without a 6 figure salary lives there. In the profession I'm getting into, I see the max I can hope to start with in NYC is about $50,000 a year.

I love New York. Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite city. But I cannot imagine living there permanently. Maybe for a few months.

It's just unlike any other city in ways where I know it would be a major adjustment to my lifestyle if I left. I haven't driven in years, I'm used to almost everything being open at all hours and being available when I need it, etc. There's also a very specific energy here - everyone is very driven no matter what field they are in. And there's also a major excitement factor and you're able to do so much here you can't do anywhere else.

The prices suck but if you're not eating out every night in like Times Square (which is hands down the worst part of the city) it's manageable and you can find good deals and spots that aren't that bad.

Plus, I can't work in any other city other than Los Angeles and while I like LA I have no interest in living there. The city suits my personality.

LA is ghastly.

London has pretty much all the attributes you described.

As for work, this has been a dilemma for me for a while now. Berlin would be perfect for my work since all the major premieres are there and I would need to travel much less for interviews. I would also be closer to many important festivals. But I so much dislike Berlin... I cannot ever imagine living there...

LA is lovely once you stop trying to understand it culturally. It requires no cultural assimilation, the city is functional and amenity-heavy, and people are accepting. People could be a little more well-read, that's all.

I'm more in the SF camp, though. Or Paris :wub2:

Any city that requires you to have a car to get around is pretty much a no-go for me.

How strange it must be to not have a car? Cars are how I've gotten around my whole life.

You get used to it. And at least in New York having one is more of a detriment than anything else. I usually just walk or use the subway. I haven't driven in probably 4-5 years.

I don't know how anyone could prefer Rotterdam, the only nice thing about it is its recently renovated train station. The rest is just a whole lot of very ugly architecture, since much of the city was rebuilt after the Germans bombed it to ruins in World War 2. The Hague's got a lot more old architecture, and feels much more cosy than other big cities since it's less... big city-y than Amsterdam. The Hague also beats all of the other major cities in the Netherlands for being directly on the coast and having its own beaches.

Delft is nice though.

So basically no American city that's not NYC would be good for you. My boyfriend lives in Texas, and "down the street" for him involves at least a 5 minute drive. It feels like nothing is nearby over there.

Quite the long distance relationship there?

Yes, which is why I'd pick Fort Worth (or near it, anyway) or even Dallas if I could just live in any city in the world. It's working for us, but things would work better with a bit less than 5,000 miles between us. One day...

Any of NYC, Paris or San Fran for me. Austria too.

Though I can't say I don't love my own city which is indeed a great place to live and winner of numerous liveability surveys over the years. Though the traffic congestion problem is getting to me.

Hehe, you said it yourself. I vastly prefer big, chaotic cities over smaller ones. I don't mind ugly architecture. Cologne is one of my very favorite cities on Earth and it has been bombed to pieces as well. Most of it is "conventionally" ugly, but I love it. I love urban life.

For some reason I have not taken much of a liking to Amsterdam the two times I have been there, but I am going again for a weekend in January, so I'll give it another shot.

Not sure. But if I can describe it: it has to be warm, but not desert year-round, no to very little crime, preferably there would be a 24/7 convenience store and a cinema within walking distance.

Ideally I'd want to live in a New York without winter. However, that doesn't exist, so I'll just pick NYC and deal with the cold.

And dont say LA. I'm not homeless.
