I noticed that people are always "I hate that piece of shit" when a new adaptation is released of a beloved original. Like, ALWAYS. I never hear anyone say "you know what, both are good". So I just wondered if there are any stories where you like both/all versions...

No. Most of the time the original is better because the remake just rehashes the original. There are a few remakes I like better (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Jungle Book).

I've only seen parts of Cape Fear (1962), but when I started the thread it was definitely on my mind. The remake is in my all-time 100 list.

I don't get why people would dismiss newer adaptations outright (which is often the case), not when neither adaptation is the original and both used other source material. I mean, just because you adapted a book or comic first doesn't mean you were the best at it.

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings sure as shit was better than the crappy animated version from the late 70's. I think Nolan's Batman trilogy counts too, not being a continuation of the 80s/90s series but being a separate adaptation of the Batman comics instead.

I enjoyed the latest Ben Hur (2016) remake and the third remake (1959) - I haven't seen the second remake (other than the making of the chariot race on YouTube) and I haven't seen the original Ben Hur movie either.

The Thing (Not the shitty prequel, Carpenter's, and the original Thing From Another World is a great 50s monster flick)

I do like a lot of different versions of A Christmas Carol, Hamlet, Dracula, etc.
The Shining (And the TV Movie does a much more faithful job so they are different enough)
The first Mummy with Fraser I enjoy a lot more than the majority of the older ones.

There is a previous version from 1907 that's only some 15 minutes long and concentrates mostly on the chariot race. If you consider that as a film than tree is right, if not, it's Lecter.

And even that is wrong. If you do not consider that a film then both of us are wrong. Then the 1959 film is the FIRST remake. If you do consider the 1907 version a film, then I am right.

They really should stop adapting this thing.

I think the history of Ben Hur's film adaptations is a sensible one.

From a short silent film in 1907 adapting the hugely popular 1880 novel, it was a definite progression to the full scale epic 1925 silent version. The step up to sound, color, and widescreen in the 1959 version was also a major upgrade for modern audiences of the time. And finally, the 2016 remake cut the running time of the '59 version almost in half to accommodate today's ADHD audiences and adds contemporary editing technique, modernized dialogue, and a more logical story adaptation which clarifies the motivation of Messala. I hope I live long enough to see the 2053 virtual reality adaptation where the viewer gets to drive their own chariot in the big race.

To me, this is a reasonable schedule of remakes that takes advantage of technology upgrades and re-adapting the original story for changing audiences' tastes. Contrast this to the Hulk 2003 vs 2008, or the 2010 American remake of the 2007 British original Death at a Funeral.

I like all of The Punisher films.

I like both Spider-Man and TASM.
