Re: Japan Box Office: Death Note Finally Dethrones Your Name
Today is a public holiday in Japan (noticed the strong ticket sales this morning). It should boost weekly number.
Anyway this should confirm Your Name passing Bayside Shakedown and HP 2nd movie to become the 7th alltime overall and 4th alltime for Japan local film.

Re: Japan Box Office: Death Note Finally Dethrones Your Name
Thanks, everyone! The wedding was very nice, it had a light Rocky Horror touch to it (husband's family are a bit on the conservative side), and this entire week was so amazing. It has a great shot at doing just that this weekend. kireilanford wrote: Anyway this should confirm Your Name passing Bayside Shakedown and HP 2nd movie to become the 7th alltime overall and 4th alltime for Japan local film. It surpassed both on Thursday, having grossed ¥17.6 billion ($171 million) now and selling over 13.54 million admissions. It's likely to break ¥18 billion ($175 million) over this upcoming weekend. Re: Japan Box Office: Death Note Finally Dethrones Your Name
I'll post this PAST weekend's actuals soon, and then I'll work on this weekend's forecast which I'll post later tonight.
Based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, Your Name. is looking in great shape to reclaim the #1 spot.

On Thursday, Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon surpassed both Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! to become the 7th Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time. It is now the 9th Most-Attended Film of All-Time as well, and still has plenty of upcoming admissions to boost it even higher in the coming weeks/months.
That's pretty much the only news for this weekend. The first couple weekends of November are typically absent of any notable openers, so if Your Name. reclaims the #1 spot this weekend, it'll likely remain there again for a couple more weeks.

It's looking fairly good. At the very least, $190 million+ looks very likely.

Spirited Away is basically unbeatable in yen and admissions.

I believe they're giving the film an extended theatrical release through December. If plays through then until the New Year, what are the chances it will hit 20 billion JPY?

If I run some numbers, using just regular ~30-35% (and it's doing better than that), it'll reach at least ¥19.5 billion. It's going to be pretty close, but it'd be such an incredible accomplishment that I believe it'll exceed the milestone and become the fourth film to achieve this feat, and become the fourth highest-grossing film of all-time. It'll be playing well through December as well, too. I don't expect it to lose any screens for the remainder of 2016, and imagine it'll maintain the bulk of its screen count until Spring. These uber-blockbusters usually stay in wide release for up to 5-6 months, and this one's just about as big as they come.

Re: Japan Box Office: Your Name. On Track to Reclaim #1 Spot
Im pretty confident it will passed that 20 b barrier.. The chance becomes higher if it receives nominations and awards in the upcoming future... Just an Oscar nomination would push the sell a little bi t more.
Watching Your Name right at the moment... still.low quality though. Waiting till december or early next year is too much.. Watching again at the movie one or twice won't be bad at all... considering that difference of visual and sound experience.. Not that I can comment on the story though since i'm still watching.. Pretty fun and refreshing at the beginning part.

There you are, Corpse has weekly numbers, there we could see numbers week by week. I only know the numbers from mimorin, but I notice that there are some kinda factor to multiplied in order to have the nearest "prediction". YN beat DN by just an inch yesterday (really close), and until around 15:30 today (japan time), DN is no more than 10 percent higher than YN. The position often change hour by hour. It's going to be pretty tight this week.. interesting!

The former has the slight edge since it plays better in the unaccounted for rural prefectures, and has a minuscule avg. ticket price advantage (~0.1%).
If Your Name. reclaims the top spot, it'll achieve its tenth non-consecutive week atop the box office charts.
>The openers were duds, unsurprising for this time of year, though only one (Drowning Love) ended up having potential at a ¥100 million start in the end, and it's a very borderline estimate.
>High & Low: The Red Rain appears to have resurface in the Top 10, thanks to an increase on Sunday versus last Sunday. I haven't been tracking it closely, but I'm guessing there were some stage greetings or some other event taking place yesterday. Whatever the case, it was able to boost the film enough to get it to/over the ¥1 billion milestone.
