At Mimorin, the one dethroning Your Name right now (and yesterday) is Tom Hank's Inferno, sequel of Da'vinci and Angels and Demons.

I don't see any Death Note in the list, or maybe Mimorin doesn't have the theaters (or theater circles) that distributed Death Note.

edit: now i see it. Death Note probably doesn't have morning shows yet.

Inferno did beat it yesterday (Friday), and there'll be a close race for second place this weekend between them. Death Note: Light Up the New World will beat both of them for #1, though.

Weekend Forecast will be up soon.

Japanese films do have a lot of melancholy in them but that is what makes them a bit unique for Western Audiences.

>Death Note: Light Up the New World, the original follow-up to the very successful Death Note series of films, based on the popular manga/anime, is going to be the film that knocks Your Name. out of the top spot over the weekend, unless Sunday yields a surprise.

Based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, the new film doesn't appear like it'll be able to replicate the success of the original films, but a solid/strong debut is still likely.

The fourth live-action film in the series is set ten years after the events of the original series, and centers around a society that is afflicted by cyber-terrorism. The new lead characters have inherited the DNA of Light Yagami and L, and and must begin the deadly game of finding each other's identities once more, but now in a world that is occupying not just one death note - but six, the maximum number allowed to exist in the human world.

>Inferno enjoyed a pretty health first day yesterday (Friday), and will be making a serious play at bumping Your Name. down even further as it aims for second place over the weekend. The film isn't going to come anywhere near the opening weekend of Angels & Demons, let alone the incredible success that was The Da Vinci Code, but the projected opening is still acceptable given the circumstances.

Actually, maybe... it's picking a lot of momentum going into the afternoon showtimes, more than I was anticipating. It's not too far behind Death Note at this time. Death Note will likely be an evening film, but Your Name. also plays well in the evening.

I'll post a mid-day update to see where things stand (2PM, ~3.5 hours from now).

If it somehow manages a tenth-consecutive week at #1, blocking Death Note this weekend, it's probably going to stay at #1 for several weeks into November, too.

For me, that trailer was awful. Interesting how a whole race can love it.

That trailer really only captures the spirit of the first half of the film. This trailer (not English subtitled) does a better job conveying the overall feel of the film: https://youtu.be/3KR8_igDs1Y

As for "rolling in the aisles or crying rivers," it's mostly the latter.

Corpse, after this weekend, do you think the Death Note film will continue to hold its #1 position, and if so how long?

I'm actually happy if Death Note would be the one that finally dethrone Your Name. It's one of my favorite series, the original manga and anime that is. The first two movies (live action) are quite good, but don't have the amount of time it needed to compete with the original story madness (as an alternate universe).

Anyway it's a pity that Your Name doesn't win tenth in a row, but it would drop someday anyway.

Close race between Your Name and Inferno, hopefully Your Name still achieve second.

Don't rule out Your Name. winning this weekend just yet. I don't think it'll happen, but it is staying close enough to Death Note so far today that it could claim its tenth-consecutive week at #1, even if it loses the day. If it's a close second place today, it could certainly wind up winning Sunday (it always enjoys nice Sun. increases) and the weekend itself, too.

Inferno is skewing older (evening showings are poor), just like the previous films in the series, so it's not going to be a threat and will almost certainly debut in third this weekend now, I believe.

If Death Note wins the weekend (as I mentioned, Your Name. could still retain its #1 spot), it'll depend on its margin of victory. If it's really close between it and Your Name. this weekend, I can definitely see the latter reclaiming the #1 spot next weekend.

Either way, one of them should be the #1 film until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens on November 23rd. Early-Mid November is a typically weak time of the year, so very few notable films are scheduled there.

And welcome to the boards! How'd you find us?

I've been following the box office performance of Your Name since late August when it was released in Japanese theaters; I saw the film at Anime Expo in July and had a hunch it was going to be a big hit. So I did some Googling on where I could find up to date statistics on the Japanese box office and have been lurking on this thread since August.

Right now they're trying to get the film in the running for an Oscar. I think this year's competition is a bit stiff but if it were to manage a nomination, how much would that help the film in the box office?

A nomination would give it a slight boost (talking a couple hundred million yen, probably); a win, however, would most certainly give it a significant boost (wouldn't be surprised by an additional couple billion yen). A win, though, is about impossible in such a strong year for animation, so I wouldn't even consider the possibility of that happening no matter if it's as good/better than any other nominees.

It's currently on track to finish somewhere among the fourth, fifth, and sixth biggest films of all-time; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. All three of those films, and possibly Your Name. as well in the coming weeks/months, are only separated by ¥1 billion (¥19.30-20.30 billion).

So an Oscar nomination could be the deciding factor of whether it finishes as the seventh biggest film of all-time, or the fourth biggest-film of all-time considering how close these films are.

Even if it were Spirited Away instead of Your Name that was released this year, the chance of winning Oscar is still slim with the kind of competition this year.

It would probably be either Dory or Zootopia, the billions

There was a higher chance for "Kimi no na wa" to get a nomination if it was next year, but this year chances are very slim mainly because it has been a year with too many deserving films and no doubt it's good, especially the visual but the plot was pretty mediocre,I highly doubt that western critics would favour it.
(*)Zootopia (Sure nomination)
(*)Moana (50-50 chance)
(*)Kubo and the two strings (Sure nomination)
(*)The Red Turtle (Co-produced by Studio Ghibli and the director have already won academy awards before with his short film.so the chances are very high)
(*)Miss Hokusai
(*)Finding dory
(*)The Girl without Hands
(*)storks

Western critics have given it very favorable reviews (you can go around searching for reviews after the LFF and other sites like Variety and the Japan Times), and I personally thought the plot was far more engaging than any of Shinkai's past films. However, if it gets nominated, I don't think it will win since this year is so stacked and the committee tends to heavily favor anything Pixar/Disney.

Sequel of the live action films. Synopsis here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Not ... _New_World

Quote:
Set ten years after the events of the previous films, in 2016, society is afflicted with cyber-terrorism. The "death note" is a supernatural notebook that grants its user the power to kill by writing the desired person's name on its pages. Six different death notes fall to the human world, the maximum number of notes that can exist there at once. In the midst of this, two new individuals inherit the DNA of Light Yagami and L and must play the deadly game of cat-and-mouse once again.[3] There are new Death Note murders after a 10-year hiatus. Mass murders caused by the Death Note takes place on wall in U.S., Shibuya in Japan and other places. 3 men pursue the 6 Death Notes. A white shinigami named Arma visits the human world as well as A computer virus called Kira spreads in the world. A message in Kira virus says to turn in 6 Death Notes. A person who has 6 Death Notes overwhelm the world. The confrontation begins over the 6 notes starts between Tsukuru, Ryūzaki and Yūki.

TBH,Shinkai is never known for plot-based works,it's the extravagant animation and overall execution which separate him from others and with "KIMI NO NA WA",I find the same trait in this work as well but as i stated before, the story was just ok and many would agree with that.

I liked Kubo more and definitely it's going to be top competitor for Zootopia but probably won't go any further, just a prestigious nomination and that's all,Zootopia will surely win because of its "deep social commentary" and it's a huge success all over the world as well with gross of over 1 billion, that's huge.

It looks like the new Death Note film is getting a rather tepid audience reception; nearly 40% of the reviews and ratings for it on Yahoo Movies Japan are 1 star. How much do you think this will affect its future performance?

Yeah, reviews are mixed. I wouldn't put much stock in the legitimacy of any 1-star ratings, though, especially since they're so plentiful - it's probably just diehard fans of the original series hating on the idea of any continuation.

Either way, it'll have some degree of frontloading, and I wouldn't expect a multiplier much higher than 5/5.5. It looks headed for an opening right around what I forecast, somewhere between ¥400-450 million ($4-4.5 million), so I'd expect it to approach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

I'll have Weekend Estimates up in a bit. Death Note will open at #1 and dethrone Your Name. Inferno ended up being a somewhat distant third place.

Today's Weekend Estimates post will be the last I make in here for a awhile, probably until late-Thursday.

I'm getting married tomorrow, and will be spending a few days in Bar Harbor (Maine) for some relaxation time. :)

DN original series was among the best original ideas ever, also the detective vs fugitive battle was far from being conventional. I'm not that surprise if many of the old fans thought this sequel as a mere cash production machine.

So, it's official now. How's the chance of YN of coming back to top next week?

It's a live-action adaptation, So I wouldn't complain much regarding the new concept and $25 million isn't bad at all,it'll get a much wider release since it's distributed by Warner Bros.

Is Japan the 2nd biggest film industry right now in Asia considering the phenomenal box office success?Btw,It has been a great year for Asian film industry as a whole "Train to Busan" from Korea, "The mermaid" from china and "KNNW" "SHIN GODZILLA" from Japan.

and congratulations sir, you've been doing a great job :) have a happy life ahead.

Overall, I'd consider Light Up the New World's opening mostly successful, if it ends up above the first Death Note film, but it's also noticeably lower than the last two entries in the series. I wouldn't have expected it to match the second film's opening (a lot of anticipation surrounded it), but being down 25% compared to the 2008's spin-off is a bit disappointing.

>Your Name. is finally dethroned after spending nine-consecutive weeks atop the box office. However, on a weekend where every other holdover suffered severe drops, Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster still managed a great hold. Its estimated tenth weekend is the third biggest of all-time, only behind Spirited Away's and Frozen's.

And after nine weeks in release, it's not just ~¥200 million shy of becoming the seventh highest grossing film of all-time, and has sold over 13.1 million admissions in the process, becoming the ninth most-attended film of all-time.

>Inferno was looking in pretty good shape heading into the weekend frame after a respectable Friday showing, but it just kinda of fizzled out over the weekend and winded up being a major disappointment.

The third film in this series' estimated opening weekend is down a whopping ~79% from The Da Vinci Code, and a significant ~51% compared to Angels & Demons, too.
