Re: Japan Box Office: 'Your Name.' Likely Exceeding $200 mil
Spirited Away achieved 16-consecutive weeks at #1 in terms of admissions (domestic sources rank films by ticket sales), but lost in week 12 to Tomb Raider in gross (recapturing the top spot a week later); Frozen achieved 16-consecutive weeks at #1 in terms of gross, but lost to Detective Conan in week 6 in admissions (recapturing the top spot a week later).

I see, thanks for the clarification. Can't wait to see how good Your Name fare with this.. I cant even imagine if the film were being released in Sept, with quite a boost in the first weeks and then second boost in Dec. Would be insan to say the least.

WK3 07 (---) ¥135,000,000 ($1.3 million), 0, ¥165,000,000 ($1.6 million), Sanada Ten Braves (Shochiku) NEW 08 (---) ¥125,000,000 ($1.2 million), 0, ¥155,000,000 ($1.5 million), Ushijima the Loan Shark - Part 3 (SPD) NEW 09 (06) ¥122,000,000 ($1.2 million), -31%, ¥900,000,000 ($8.8 million), Your Lie in April (Toho) WK3 10 (07) ¥95,000,000 ($940,000), -37%, ¥825,000,000 ($8.0 million), Samurai Hustle Returns! (Shochiku) WK3>Your Name. will obviously stay atop the box office for another weekend, and should at least score the 2nd biggest fifth weekend of all-time (behind Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's fifth weekend [New Year bump]). It will also exceed the ¥11 billion milestone and 8.5 million admissions on Sunday, making it only the second film to ever reach both marks after five weeks in release (Spirited Away being the first).
>Sully debuts this weekend, and based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's going to have a successful start of possibly ¥300 million or a little more. Eastwood is a very popular director in Japan (all his films are successful), and Hanks is also a respected actor and one of few Hollywood draws left. It's easy to predict a low avg. ticket price as it'll surely skew quite old, so that could prevent it from breaking ¥300 million; either way, it's looking good, and an opening on this level would guarantee at least ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), with a solid shot at ¥2 billion ($20 million).
>The others openers, Sanada Ten Braves and Ushijima the Loan Shark 3 will have a minimal impact on the Top 10 as they're unlikely to make the Top 5.

Re: Japan Box Office: 'Your Name.' Likely Exceeding $200 mil
It doesn't have a release date, and probably won't see a theatrical release (maybe a limited release next year if it miraculously wins the Oscar)... I don't believe any of Laika's films have ever received theatrical releases, and if they have, it's only at a couple locations in Tokyo.
I do think Kubo and the Two Strings could perform fairly well in Japan, though it could face a bit of a backlash from borrowing heavily from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (the Moon Princess Kaguya story). The Japanese can be really... finicky when Hollywood adapts or uses elements of domestic material, especially if it's unacknowledged.
It's rare in Japan now for imported animated films to receive theatrical releases because they almost always bomb (usually missing the Top 10 entirely) and fail to find distributors. Disney/Pixar, and recently Illumination, firmly fill the imported animation interest of Japanese audiences; all the other imported animation films from Sony, Warner Bros., Paramount, etc. have to settle for home video.
>Blue Sky Studios has had only one of their films receive a theatrical release in Japan this whole decade with The Peanuts Movie, which bombed.
>DreamWorks hasn't had a theatrical release in Japan since... 2012 (Madagascar 3).

It makes sense. Japan is all about animation. They love the stuff. They have so much to choose from and so much of their own stuff, which resonates more than talking US animals.

Corpse was very busy this past week with work and helping organize a voter registration group, and had no adequate time to post any updates recently. He'll have a free evening tomorrow, so expect an outpouring of posts then.

(Shochiku) WK3I was a bit off last weekend, to say the least, in regards to the majority of films. I should have done some quick research of past weekends following "Silver Week", and I would have known that drops are generally harsh over this weekend after enjoying multiple holidays.
>Your Name. still held very well and easily retained its hold atop the #1 position, though this is its biggest drop-to-date, having sold a further 637,000 admissions. However, a 20% drop over this particular weekend is still notably strong, and it was able to achieve the sixth-biggest fifth weekend of all-time. But more importantly, its five-week total is the second-biggest of all-time, trailing just Spirited Away after the same amount of time, and has sold over 8.5 million admissions after just 31 days in release.
It's already sold more tickets than Star Wars: The Force Awakens (over 1 million more) to become the most-attended film of the year, and it'll overtake it in revenue before this upcoming weekend (I think it did on Wednesday, actually).
It's impossible to determine if it's going to begin to have more "normal" drops henceforth, since its weekdays are notably weaker this week due to last week's holidays, but I do think it'll at least begin to slow down a bit after remaining largely flat/slightly increasing for four-straight weeks. I still have it comfortably exceeding ¥15 billion ($150 million) and earning an All-Time Top 10 position on the charts, and should still be capable of challenging that ¥20 billion ($200 million), All-Time Top 5, barrier.
>Sully was surprisingly frontloaded based on the percentage of ticket sales that its pre-sales represented over the weekend. The debut is still solid, selling 172,748 admissions across 360 screens, and is yet another success for Eastwood, whom remains one of the biggest Western directors in the market. It'll be aiming for a finish around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).
>Ushijima the Loan Shark 3 performed better than I was expecting, and mostly due to the large drops experienced by the holdovers, it managed a Top 5 debut. Taking advantage of last week's mid-week holidays, the third (but not last!) film in the franchise sold 196,748 admissions across 185 screens over its first four days in release.
>Sanada Ten Braves largely disappoints, and despite playing a an able number of screens, 321, it only managed a seventh place start over the weekend frame. Since opening earlier in the week, also taking advantage of the mid-week holidays, it only sold 177,000 admissions in its first four days in release.
>Shin Godzilla experienced its largest decline by far, partly due to this weekend being notably week, but also having been in release for nine weeks now, it's begun to lose a lot of showings at many locations. However... its performance has been nothing short of amazing as it has sold over 5 million admissions after nine weeks in release, becoming the first Godzilla film since 1965 to achieve that incredible accomplishment.
