Can't believe Finding Dory had bigger opening wknd than both Deadpool & Suicide Squad. WTF!?!!!
Dory is the true winner of the year so far.

Dory is the sequel to a hugely beloved and well-known animated film. The winner for me is The Secret Life of Pets. Comes out of nowhere and makes $300m+ and then holds great week-after-week. It'll probably end with $350m. Deadpool is a close second. Suicide Squad isn't even in my top ten (yet).

But it outdid your total prediction already.

That doesn't matter at all.

Let's say a film cost $100m, and my prediction for it is $10m. It grosses $20m. It is a major flop, but I am supposed to claim it's the winner of the year just because it passed my "prediction"? Don't be silly.

Looking at the facts and data, Suicide Squad is nowhere near my top ten yet.

Here's the fact and data. You predicted 65m total for SS. It did 133m in its opening wknd.
It's a winner & you lost.

Only losers bring up a films budget cost. :funny:

That's not what this is about

But anyway, I didn't predict correctly, sure. *shrugs*

Well done if you did. Perhaps put it on your resume.

When determining the "success story of the year", why wouldn't anyone bring up the budget? We are, after all, interested in movie financials, are we not?

Dory wasn't a surprise. Pets wasn't a surprise. Suicide Squad wasn't a surprise. Deadpool is probably the biggest. That was huge. Otherwise there hasn't been many surprise successes.

The most surprising film for me this year thus far was TARZAN.

Yes, it had a $180 m budget but I had that one pegged a whole lot lower and it did decently. It drastically surpassed all expectations I had for it.

So SS did hold fine over Sunday, nothing as bad as Saturday.

Pets have been showing really strong legs. LO and IA5 are the only movies in Top 10 to increase from estimates.

Who said anything about surprises?

And Pets was a surprise success. Not many people were predicting it to make $300m.

Deadpool, Pets, Zootopia and Jungle Book all outperformed expectations (from a few months out) by a huge margin. The First two in particular.

While exceeding expectations, the marketing for Deadpool was so spot on that it was clear it had the potential to break out big.

The Jungle Book grossing what it did was simply crazy. I don't think anyone thought it could make that much.

For that reason I'd say TJB is the most surprising to me.

Then they were stupid ;). It was obvious it would be huge. I predicted 300 Million for the summer box office contest. And yes it's doing more than that, but it's not exactly a huge shock. Plenty of others predicted around what I did in the contest and it was in pretty much everyone's top 5 of the summer.

The only one I would have pegged being huge a couple months out was Pets and even Zootopia. I wouldn't have predicted quite as much as they ended up with though. But Deadpool was a huge surprise. I mean as its release neared it was obvious it would be really big. But early on I honestly didn't think it would do 100 Million total.

Unrelated, but The Jungle Book might actually pass Deadpool after all - probably will take 3-4 more weeks though.

Deadpool - $363,070,709
The Jungle Book - $362,645,141

Indeed. Deadpool is easily the biggest surprise.

I think even the most optimistic predictions were thinking Daredevil/Ghostrider adjusted - $140-$150m total. Deadpool almost made that much in its OW!

I predicted 180 million from the start! I thought it could match Ant-Man.

You didn't go higher than 150 million in the prediction thread until the third day of its release. Lecter was the only one who went higher than that, and his 185m prediction was still only just over half of what Deadpool made in total AND made on its day of release.

In contrast, most predictions for The Jungle Book were over 200m, with some going over 300m, so Deadpool definitely came as a much bigger surprise. Hell, Algren even predicted over 300m for The Jungle Book and he's pretty consistent at claiming every film ever will underperform and make like, 100m max.

Magnus is right, everyone who claims that anything other than Deadpool has been the biggest surprise of the year so far is a fool.

- no 3D
- 3rd-tier superhero(in mainstream at least)
- February
- R-rated
- Ryan Fucking Reynolds

And it's not like Deadpool had some kind of a sleeper run, it opened absolutely huge.
