Post Dawn of the Dead (1978) Movie Night. (7 Members)
Dolce i was wondering, since there was a Night of the Living Dead movie night, could we possibly get a Dawn of the Dead (1978) movie night going? If you liked Night of the Living Dead then you'll absolutely love Dawn of the Dead. It's an absolute horror masterpiece that brilliantly expands on the events of Night of the Living Dead. I think it's at least 10 times scarier also. Lemme know what you think.

Cheers! :)

Well I guess i could try watching it with you. Is it kind of the same premesis? The thing about Night of the Living Dead, it was a pretty tightly knit movie. The ending was interesting, but it didn't leave me feeling the same thing could happen again. His death made me sit there and think even more than the zombies, how many people had the officers killed. Sort of a, if the ailment doesn't get you, the remedy will. That point was made, so I don't see how the sequel could be added? But I remember other posters saying Dawn of the Dead was excellent, and even better than Night too, so when do you want to watch it?

the sequel makes sense when you see it play out. Night doesn't seem like the type of movie that needs a sequel, but dawn expands on night very effectively. dawn of the dead takes place pretty much right after night. humans are attempting to contain the epidemic but it's not going so well. Most don't know what to do and are panicing, as seen at the beginning and others don't take it seriously. There is a scene showing amateur hunters joking and laughing as they are killing zombies, and it's almost like they're treating it as a social event and don't think the threat is very serious. Four people flee in a news helecopter and land on the roof of a shopping mall and hold up there for a while. They get to live out all of their fantasies until all hell breaks loose......

I don't want to give much away so i'll leave it at that. It is a brilliant horror movie which doesn't get nearly the publicity it deserves when discussing all-time great horror. This one is a lot more graphic and violent than Night, so it would be advisable not to eat right before you watch it. A lot of the makeup and effects look dated, and you can see the limits of the tight budget, but you can't beat this movie if you want to be genuinely scared.

I'll be able to watch it pretty much any time this weekend, just let me know what time is good for you guys.

Dolce, here's an excellent 4-star review by Roger Ebert. It should explain the movie without giving too much away

I've seen it, and I have to say it is even better then Night of the Living Dead. Definately scarier, gorier and even more of a masterpiece.

Ok. I'm in. I'll plan a meal 4 hours earlier, and you can be sure I'll be watching it smack dab in the middle of the day again too. 8-[

When are you up for it Adam? We're watching Bride with White Hair this weekend, so it'll have to wait until a little later I think, but besides that, I'm pretty open. Eh, between this and Amityville, you guys have to do me a favor and let me pick the next "horror" film and it'll be a bit less horrorific!

If it was the recent one, I'd join, the remake. Something about old horror movies I find creepier than recent ones.

Haha! Double wammy horror weekend. You guys are so going to have to sit through Fellini or Antonioni for this.

BTW, I like that write up you had above. I don't usually see you take such a nice drawn out explanation and put it to text. Seems you must think very highly of this movie, so I'll definately give it a chance...sans lunch.

Maybe you'd prefer a Clerks/Pret-á-Porter double feature.

I'll watch it again this weekend. We should make it a double feature with the remake. Then Dolce won't sleep for a week.

Lecter has just informed me there might actually be some content in this film?!?!? I'm getting excited, since up until now, I've felt the horror movies I've seen have been mostly about style, and build a decent sense of tension, but don't do anything with the viewers attention above that. I have always wondered about it since recent horror ones take place in the suburbs. Basically, there is a great built in criticism (or could be) of suburban culture, not knowing your neighbors, the myth of a neighborhood community that certainly doesn't exist, etc. But its always stopped shy of that by just making it the sotry of last (wo)man standing.

I'm very excited that Dawn of the Dead might actually have some undermessage.

BTW, Termi, since rogue is watching too, we actually have 4 viewers (to update the title and first post).

Dolce, there are a lot of undertones in the film. In a lot of ways it is a social commentary rather then just a horror film.

I completely agree. Dolce, you'll be surprised at how much depth this film has.

Well, I'm assuming since termi said it takes place in a shopping mall that its going to have some commentary on suburbia? Is that right? I'd like to see a bit about gender too. Never ceases to amaze me about the screaming girl that ends up on top. I was actually surprised in night of the Living Dead that the blonde woman wasn't the last one standing.

It's one of the reasons I wanted to see Shaun of the Dead. because I here it really cuts into cubicle zombies, basiclly, the living dead, That Shaun doesn't even realize until half way through that his co-workers aren't their usual selves. That's great, a friend and I two years ago cme up with a concept having to do with odd housemates that were the living dead too, and how they slowly suck the life out of their now boarder.

I really hope Dawn has a bit more to it, I had assumed from your posts it was just gorier, but now I'm getting a bit more excited to see this.

The gore really isn't too intense actually. Yes it is present, but not shockingly so. Just watch it, that is all I can say.

yeah to me it really isn't that intense, but i'm used to a lot of violence and gore in movies. I've seen movies 20 times gorier than Dawn, but it's just a big step up gore-wise from Night. I think i remember Dolce saying she was disturbed by the flesh eating scenes in Night, well there are more of those and then some in Dawn ;)
