This will be the future of filmmaking, for a while at least.

And "Escape Plan 2". Oh dear.

The "Now You See Me" Chinese language spin-off will only make money in China, and I really don't think it'll make that much either. The reason Now You See Me 2 did well was not purely that it featured China in the film and starred Jay Chou. If that was the case, any Chinese film that stars Jay Chou (or any other Chinese star for that matter) would do well. It was that it is a major(ish) Hollywood production that featured China and starred Jay Chou. I hope Lionsgate are not overlooking this. If it becomes a Chinese-language spin-off, it will hopefully fail. The "brand" for this franchise isn't strong enough to spin-off yet. The second one didn't do THAT well to warrant this.

Back to the original point: this is silly. I'd argue that Escape Plan was successful in China because audiences there still like Sly and Arnie not because they were in love with the concept. Make a sequel without them - and who gives a fuck?

Well, that article doesn't say anything with regards to Arnie or Sly returning. Just that they are exploring a sequel, and it would be a co-production. Either way, it is silly. Escape Plan as a stand alone film is better. If they did not come back, it would be idiotic, though any Hollywood star/Chinese star ensemble would work to make big bucks here.

Sly does not look interested in making The Expendables 4 or Rambo 5 at this point, doubt he will return for Escape Plan 2...

Yeah, he won't. Perhaps he can let 50 Cent carry the franchise forward. He's in need on the money.

Chinese don't like black people.

Post Re: Lionsgate planning a Chinese Now You See Me spin-off
"Now You See Me" spinoff will likely do very well in China. The theme is a major selling point. Their audience craves magic tricks, twists and turns, and risky thrills.

Quote:
"For the trailer, we cut a local version to emphasize the family connection between Mark Ruffalo's character and his father and then moved into the magic and the action," Qiu explains. "The U.S. trailer was more focused on the theme of revenge — an individualistic American feeling — and action. For Chinese people, family is much more important than individual desires and generally Chinese people are more introverted. We found our trailer tested much more successfully locally."

This is not entirely true. From what I've learned about traditional Chinese cultures and values, Chinese people are ultra-conservative and highly moralistic by today's standards. They are self-interested and guided by Confucian moral disciplines that extend from self, to family, to the country, and to the world outside, in that order. Individualistic instinct for revenge with a moralistic cause is common in classical literature. The traditional Chinese values are almost in contrast with the Western ideas of liberalism.

I think all Qiu is trying to say is that family ranks higher for a Chinese person than it does for a Western one. And that is true. And it depends; sometimes Chinese people are incredibly self-centered, but when family are involved they are more focused on the group and not one's personal desires. Personal desires, for Chinese people, usually share common ground with what the family would want anyway.

Maybe. Or they are more interested in the power struggles within and between families.

Not noticed any power struggles within the Chinese families I know. But perhaps between other families, yes.
