America is simply too tolerant, if they would make it easier to put people in prison, those people would think twice before committing any of these crimes.

It's a bit hard when it's the police ("America") that are committing the crimes.

They have been putting more people in prison since the 90s. A study found that putting more people in prison this point has almost no effect on crime rates.

About what tree and a half and DP07 mentioned about the incarceration rate; that's very interesting.
You oughta say someone should come up with a better solution to reduce the rate of crime then.

Well America has a much higher population than those countries, so it's hard to really say that is a good stat.
I wouldn't say we are tolerant. I'd say we're more complacent to the situation, as the majority of these events don't happen in anywhere most people have ever heard of. So while people are outraged, they keep moving on with their lives. That's hard to change, unless it happens near you.

China and India each have over 4 times the population of America, and I'm not sure I would look to some of the other countries on this list for guidance on the best way to run a prison system.

Yeah, I really don't think that of all countries USA is the tolerant one about putting people in prisons. If anything, what is lacking are actual rehabilitation programs as opposed to simple locking people up.

Re: Deadliest Mass Shooting in US History.
Theguns point about people being too complacent and moving on with their life after a minor period of second hand grief is correct.
If Newton couldn't mobile people to support gun control, IDK what will beyond a transformational leader on the republican side.

I don't have the statistics but I get the general impression that the US is a "tough-on-crime" society with a strong "law-and-order" lobby. Long jail time makes little distinction between minor and serious offenses. Prosecutors and law enforcement have a lot of power and discretion while judges and independent oversight body are weaker.

Re: Deadliest Mass Shooting in US History.
I have read and thought about this, and this is less relevant to the mass shootings, since that another animal all together. stuffp wrote: America is simply too tolerant But this totally applies to, it's tolerance on police crime/ brutality. There have been these 23 police on black shootings, and in all those cases none of the white police officers involved were criminally charged. You're not going to stop racism, if the police are constantly empowered in their position to act radically whenever facing a black person in a law and order situation.
