Zootopia 2 box-office potential
It hasn't been officially announced yet, but let's face it - it will be. It's a tremendous domestic and worldwide success and as a buddy cop film it lends itself well to sequels.
Now I think timing is crucial here. They should not let more than 3-4 years pass... But if the sequel is out by, say, 2020 and it is good, then I think it will make $400+ million domestically with ease.

$500m contender if it's great and comes out by 2019.

100 million opening, how much more depends on when it's released.

It's opening will depend on the date it's releasing and it's total won't match the original

Depends on a lot, but it will definitely get $200m.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
The premise lends itself to a sequel that feels fresh and new despite the sequel-ness, I think. While I don't think it would necessarily open huge-huge (sub 100 million) it would stand a chance to break 400 million.

This was a WoM juggernaut I doubt the sequel will have similar legs.

The most likely year for Zootopia 2 is 2022, just going by the schedule, and knowing how long they usually take to make animated features. Not sure what this does for the box office. I still think it can make over $400m in 2016 ticket prices, even if it takes 6 years. Even as a Zootopia fanboy, I think $500m for the sequel is a bit much.

Yeah, 2019 is unrealistic. But 2020 is a possibility. I mean WoM is terific, but How to Train Your Dragon 2 made me wary of overpredicting sequels to beloved animated films.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
Considering that even Cars 2 took 5 years, the earliest I would expect Zootopia 2 is November 2021. Pixar and WDAS aren't Dreamworks, after all. WDAS has a lot of projects going on right now, and I don't know if they want to get bogged down in sequels, with Frozen 2 confirmed. Even a Wreck-it Ralph 2 has a lot of coverage in the media.

I am not sure we'll ever see Wreck-it Ralph 2.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
Considering the big news break, I think this is the likely schedule for Walt Disney Animation Studios: November 23, 2016: Moana March 9, 2018: Wreck-It Ralph 2 November 21, 2018: Gigantic November 27, 2019: Frozen 2 (Predicted) November 25, 2020: Original Movie (Box office mojo says something is scheduled here.) November 5, 2021: Zootopia 2 (Predicted)

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
Why did this never happen? I guess bladdblah was correct - the schedule was too busy, and Ralph and Frozen will end up taking 6 years so that puts this on target for 2022. Too far away!

Frozen is going to make so much money. It's going to have the holidays as well. The last one made $1.3 B. Would not be shocked if the next one pulled $2 billion.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
This will obviously still happen, I just don't think Disney is in a rush with their packed schedule. I expect to see this in 2021 or 2022. But there's no way they don't do a sequel, this is another potential billion dollar franchise for them.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
Zootopia 2 has been confirmed for November 2025. It's going to be MASSIVE. Would say it has a chance for top 3 for the year. Last movie will adjust to about $430.5M. It's 4.55X multiplier was incredibly strong with a $19.5M opening day carrying on to a $341.3M domestic total ($1.028B global tally). Wouldn't be shocked by an Incredibles type jump here. https://www.thewrap.com/zootopia-2-release-date/

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
Only issue is Disney has diluted their animation brands. Let us see how IO2 does. Otherwise this movie has great potential. Other thing is these movies seem to be made in accelerated schedule. I am not certain they will make a movie anywhere as good as 1st one. Disney is planning this, Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 over a 12 month period.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
I was actually surprised by the restraint Disney has had related to Zootopia so don't think it will feel as diluted because this is a sequel people actually wanted, but will have had to wait 9 years for. Disney could have easily made one in 2019, another in 2022, etc.
Post Inside Out 2's release, Zootopia I believe will be Disney animation / Pixar's only film to not yet have had a sequel with a $300M+ domestic gross.
Super Mario is the only other $1B+ animated movie to not yet have a sequel released but that won't be too long to see one.
Coco/Up are the only two $750M+ global grossing animated movies that haven't seen a sequel either.
There was the Zootopia show but I feel Disney's restraint gives this a must watch factor that wouldn't necessarily be there for Toy Story 5.

Re: Zootopia 2 box-office potential
I've read there has been some murmur that this has been test screened and it's great. Who knows how true that is but I wouldn't be surprised, the first is terrific.
