But all those techs are definitely possible. It's going to be one of Leo's highest grossing films ever and THE highest grossing western ever. Dances with Wolves went 7/12, so The Revenant could have a similar total.

The big deciding factor is just how much will AMPAS voters embrace Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant's competition in those tech categories.

I see it winning Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography, and one of the Sound categories right now, while I also think it has a chance to surprise in Visual Effects. But I think Mad Max is too strong in some of the tech categories for it to sweep. Costume Design, Production Design and Make Up seem to go to Mad Max, and I think Editing is between Mad Max and The Big Short.

I could definitely see a reality in which it sweeps. It is going to win Best Picture, Director, Actor and Cinematography.

And it seems to have the edge over Mad Max as the more loved film, so when all Academy members vote for all of the categories, I'm not sure how much they will make distinctions between categories. It seems likely that The Revenant lovers would just vote The Revenant down the line for all of the tech categories for which it is nominated. But Mad Max could win Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup & Hair.

Both films won ADG (because of the category split), The Revenant took ASC whereas Mad Max: Fury Road took ACE.

It should get BP, BD, BA and BC. So that's 4 key wins.

Though of those, I'd say BP is the one that could slip through its fingers to Spotlight or The Big Short - both of which should win screenplay honours.

That shimmer of hope that Mad Max would win some big awards has definitely faded, that's for sure. So I ask myself, what's left? The Revenant is the only one that is screaming "Winner".

Assuming those two films lose editing, having either one win BP and just Screenplay, while another film wins BD and a slew of techs would be one of the biggest WTF moments ever in Oscar history. The shock in the audience when the envelope is opened will be noticeable.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wins Supporting Actor. Remember this is the academy awards.....

There's absolutely, positively no way that Tom Hardy is beating the sentimental favorite in Stallone.

I have Revenant snagging six awards in my final prediction. Actor and Cinematography are 100% locked, and Picture and Director look extremely likely. I'm less certain about the Sound categories - which should come down to razor-thin margins with Mad Max - but I'm guessing that the Best Picture heat carries it. I also wouldn't be surprised to see it take Makeup. Editing and Production Design are possible if they really, really love it. Visual Effects would be a surprise considering that the CGI is pretty subtle outside of the bear, but it's not impossible if word circulates through the industry about how much of an assist the film got from its effects team. Costume Design seems unlikely considering voters' propensity for awarding the prettiest nominee (which is why I'm not as sold as others on predicting Mad Max in that category). A win for costumes would still be far less shocking than a win for Tom Hardy, though. Almost no one was predicting him for a nomination, and "riding the coattails" isn't nearly as powerful of a narrative as Stallone's poignant return to his most iconic role.

Since when do the Oscars award the prettiest nominee for costumes? Otherwise Into the Woods would have beat Grand Budapest Hotel (David NEED not comment).

Really I think the only films with a chance at costumes are Revenant and Mad Max, because they're nominated for picture. Anything else would have to pull a Great Gatsby

Actually, no one need comment because The Grand Budapest Hotel's costumes were prettier, more colorful, and more stylistic than those of Into the Woods. Its win fits the model perfectly.

Furthermore, Best Picture heat doesn't mean a ton in Costume Design. Marie-Antoinette was divisive and Elizabeth: The Golden Age was roundly panned, and yet both of them won. Hell, The Duchess and The Young Victoria were invisible outside of that one category, and they were both universally predicted to win (and did). The Academy loves pretty-looking period pieces in this category, and that love extends to films that take place in a fantasy world like a particular period (like Grand Budapest and Cinderella this year).

Or, to say it in far fewer words: do your research.

LOL, zwack's picture post is a fail. Everyone knows my deep hatred for Wes Anderson, but set design and costumes in it were top-notch.

I count the same amount of colors. And I think the beautiful witch and the wolf are very interesting and inspired.

I like the red one on the right, but the others are essentially one color.

There's not a lot of difference in those photos, but how the costumes are used and how they blend with the set design and nature of the film, The Grand Budapest Hotel's costumes are better. But it's all opinion anyway. If you prefer Into the Woods' costumes, zwackerm, then there's really no argument to win.
