Looks like The Revenant will be going empty handed. SW7 could still win some.

Best Original Screenplay
5 stories that captivated their audience from being fresh and creative.
Here are the nominees for Best Original Screenplay

Amy Schumer
Trainwreck : Ever since her father drilled into her head that monogamy isn't realistic, magazine writer Amy (Amy Schumer) has made promiscuity her credo. As much as she enjoys an uninhibited life free of commitment, Amy is really in a rut. While writing a profile about charming and successful sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), she finds herself actually falling in love for the first time -- and what's more, Aaron seems to like her too. Amy starts to wonder if it's time to clean up her act.

Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer
Spotlight : In 2001, editor Marty Baron of The Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church.

Pete Docter, Josh Cooley and Meg LeFauve
Inside Out : Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley's emotions -- led by Joy (Amy Poehler) -- try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust.

Alex Garland
Ex Machina : Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) a programmer at a huge Internet company, wins a contest that enables him to spend a week at the private estate of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), his firm's brilliant CEO. When he arrives, Caleb learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined.

Quentin Tarantino
The Hateful Eight : While racing toward the town of Red Rock in post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunter John "The Hangman" Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man who claims to be a sheriff. Hoping to find shelter from a blizzard, the group travels to a stagecoach stopover located on a mountain pass. Greeted there by four strangers, the eight travelers soon learn that they may not make it to their destination after all.

And the Winner is.....

Who do you think will win? Can Tarantino or Schumer surprise? Will Inside Out or Ex-Machina take its second trophy of the night?

Alex Garland is such an awesome talent. He has a hand in so many of my favorites: The Beach (the novel), 28 Days Later, Sunshine, NEVER LET ME GO, Dredd, Ex Machina.

Hmmm. Could Inside Out give Mad Max a run for BP?

I voted Ex Machina, but Inside Out was a very close 2nd for me for screenplay.

Best costume design

Image

Carol

In the lesbian drama Carol, costume designer Sandy Powell conjures a sumptuous vision of 1950s America, contrasting wealthy elder lover Carol's elegant accessories and luxurious fabrics with ingénue Therese's more relaxed and simple style. Meanwhile, the peripheral characters display a cross section of the decade's street wear, from heavy overcoats to bohemian berets.

Image

Cinderella

To costume Disney's big-budget live-action retelling of Cinderella, double nominee Powell aimed to emulate "a nineteenth-century period film made in the 1940s or '50s," adorning star Lily James in a swirling gown of turquoise, pale blue, and lavender while channeling Joan Crawford's chic severity with the attire of Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother.

Image

Crimson Peak

To heighten the early-20th-century world of Guillermo del Toro's Gothic romance Crimson Peak, costume designer Kate Hawley infuses each outfit with symbolism, particularly via color coding. Inexperienced heroine Edith is often clad in gold and floral prints, representing her character's wealth and romantic idealism, while her husband Sir Thomas and his malevolent sister Lucille are shown in icily lunar colors, murderous moths to Edith's imperiled butterfly.

Image Image

Mad Max: Fury Road

A post-apocalyptic wardrobe must tell a story: no outfit is singular, but rather it tells the tale of its assemblage, representing its wearer's scavenger lifestyle: a swatch of leather here, a repurposed piece of technology there, every element blasted by sand and sun. Mad Max: Fury Road costume designer Jenny Beavan expertly captures this sartorial chaos while subtly juxtaposing the more heroic garb of Max, Furiosa, and co. with the gladiatorial grotesquerie of their pursuers.

Image

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

As with every designer and technician enlisted for the highly anticipated seventh Star Wars film, costume designer Michael Kaplan's primary challenge consisted of paying homage to and creating continuity with what came before while also envisioning shapes and textures new to the galaxy far, far away. He modestly redesigned the storm-troopers to represent 30 years of in-universe advancement and upheaval and created two of the franchise's most striking antagonists to date, the imposing and reflective-armored duo of Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma.

-

And the winner is:

Room can go empty handed if Larson doesn't win which isn't a sure shot since Theron from Mad Max is on a Fury Road.

I wasn't a big fan of Crimson Peak, but the film losing Art Direction and Costumes is just a shame. At least nominated it, unlike the Academy.
