Post Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Force Awakens is a good blockbuster. It's action is good, it has funny bits. Nice cast. Special effects are very good. I liked it, and overall it's way better than the PT. Rey and Fin are two very good characters, BB8 is great on screen too. Kylo Ren is cool, he's a good villain for the one part, but he appears weak too. He could have been more dark, but killing his father was boss though. Han Solo was the best character of the film for me, his wit delivered the best scenes. Harrison Ford really delivered the goods there, his best role in years again I think.

And there isn't much else to say really, I've never been a fan of Star Wars, but I have enjoyed the mythology behind it. The Force Awakens doesn't deliver to what I think it could, and for a non-fan just delivers popcorn entertainment. Because of the story of 6 films preceding it, it's actually a must to have seen those first to really enjoy and appreciate this film as well. This film falls nicely in line with some of the other big franchise blockbusters of recent time like Jurassic World, and the Avengers, and Fast and Furious.

B+

This review sums it up well. Though I disagree about the prequel trilogy. They were way more inspired and fresh.

Some cool storylines they could have done.

Rebuilding the Jedi Order
Reinstating the Republic and the Senate
The rise of the First Order

A combination of the three would have been good.

So why did nobody have a problem with the murder of billions of people in this?

Because the bad guys did it and it's not something that was shrugged off without consequences?

I liked all of the other Star Wars movies except Phantom Menace, but found Force Awakens to be gravely dull. They seem to have missed the importance of myth and universe-building to the series, but I suppose that was intentional to make it homogenous enough to bring in the big audience like it did. This one never takes a moment to build the portent of the story and instead is just an antic blur. Extremely disappointing. *C*

The bad guys did it in other films.

Also, it was shrugged off. They reacted for what, half a scene? There was no weight given to the billions of lives lost.

I hope you got IV and VI wrong. There's no way Return is the best SW movie. But yes VII is the worst SW movie. I agree with that.

My personal ranking
1. II
2. III
3. VI
4. IV
5. V
6. I
7. VII
Though based on the films actual quality, not my preference
1. V
2. IV
3. III
4. VI
5. II, I and VII are interchangable.

You genuinely don't get why people were bothered by MAN OF STEEL. Like, it doesn't even process in your brain.

It's not that people died. It's not that a lot of people died. It's that Superman himself contributed to the mass carnage, and then spared a minute to passionately kiss Lois in the middle of ground zero, surrounded by rubble and what must be thousands of dead bodies. It was impressively tone deaf.

He didn't, though. He tackled Zod through... 2? buildings, both empty. This was HOURS after the world engine arrived and started destroying the city.

The only thing that was "tone deaf" was the kiss. But that's hardly anything new that's ever been done. Get the fuck over yourself.

It's not about changing our minds. It's about you actually comprehending a difference of opinion. Not agreeing with the other side, not swapping your position, but actually processing why someone is saying what they're saying. Even if you think the world is wrong about MAN OF STEEL. Which is totally fair. I haven't seen the film in three years; clearly you know it better than I do. But I can certainly speak to the impression it made and its internet response as a whole.

Because questions like this...

Chippy wrote:

...mean you're not processing it.

(Blah blah blah, don't bother replying, blah blah blah.)

No, I completely understand why people are questioning the MoS final fight. I'm just saying the questioning of it is completely overblown, especially compared to every other destruction scene in any other movie. I think it's silly, because anytime MoS is ever brought up, it's either about that, or the killing of Zod. Both of which are overblown.

I'm fine with the destruction of the multiple planets in TFA. I do find it odd though that it didn't really seem to register with anyone. Almost as if it's now an afterthought.

In the interest of finding some common ground, I've always thought the criticism over killing Zod was silly, because it was the smart character choice in the moment, and it clearly hurt Superman to do it.
