Easily the best ensemble I saw last year...Julia Roberts is great here but her role is not as juicy...no big scene like the one with Clive Owen and Natalie Portman at the bar, for example.

This along with Before Sunset and Dogville were three movies last year that just crushed every Hollywood cliched, and managed to be one of the best movies of the year in doing so. I wish there were more like it.

P.S. That last SCENE. BEAUTIFUL.

I still loved him, just not as much as the other three actor's.

Wow, I saw it a second time and I loved it even more! Probably in my top 10 of 2004, or damn close to it.

OMG.. the biggest waste of 2 hours of my life.... There was no story?! Everyone cheats? woot!

Wow.. the dialogue in this movie was unnecessary.. It was pure skanked up.

You're right, Closer did not really have much of a story. This is a film that relies on characters and actions, not plot.

I wouldn't call the dialogue in this movie "unnecessary" so much as raw and frank. Normal people may not talk exactly like any of these four did, but I never felt the characters came across trying to sound like they were smart or anything.

Count me in for the "Blower´s daughter" fan club... or any Damien Rice song for that matter. If only for getting us all know this amazing song and singer, the film would be more than worthy...

But i´m also in love with this movie. I think It is completely real and therefore heartbreaking. The dialogue is stylized, yes, but the feelings and the situations feel so true... Whenever someone says the film is gratuitously bleak or just goes for cheap shocks, I just shake my head in disbelief... This is how relationships really are. This is how we all behave, sometimes. We lie, we cheat, we want to hurt, we love with passion...

Love i, love it, love it. But don´t hold any grudges against people who don´t... Just have one thing to tell them: " That's the spirit. Thank you. Thank you for your honesty. Now fuck off and die, you fucked up slag".

But I don't know...the emphasis he put on certain words, his stare, his hand expressions...EVERYTHING about him was nearly pitch perfect. I think Clive and Natalie had the more juicy roles in this movie, and perhaps tHAT's why they got more attention, but I don't know...I do feel Law was at least somewhat underrated in this (though his best performance last year was in Alfie).

Julia Roberts was good but she had the least interesting role. I mean I saw her as a person who is TRYING to do the right thing, but who is also weak, and pretty imperfect. But in the process, she didn't have that acidness the other characters did and ...which I kinda enjoyed. Hehe. Still, like I said I do think this was the best ensemble last year, so when I say she wasn't as good as the others, I mean...she was still great.

If I could describe this movie in one word I would have to say "Perfect"

It's just the kind of film that really draws you in, and makes you feel what these people are feeling. It's just so real and raw. I found everything in this film to be realistic, and I didn't think it was unbelievable in any way, shape, or form. The story is interesting, and its full of predicaments that I didn't see coming. For instance, the conclusion I did not expect, and was very shocked by it, but I thought it was a great ending, it couldn't of been better. The beginning is great, and the chemistry between all of the characters is fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised by all of the actors. They are all very impressive in their roles, and were casted perfectly. Natalie Portman is sensational, and definitely stole the show in this movie. Clive Own is amazing, and one of the best actors in the film. Jude Law is great, and many of his scenes were fantastic. Julia Roberts was great as always, but I felt her character was underused, and should've had more screen time. One thing that I loved most about this film was the dialogue. I just thought it was brilliant. It might of been a little surprising, and nasty in a way, but I found it to be used intelligently, and very appropiately. I just loved the interaction between all of the characters. My favorite scene was the strip club scene with Portman and Owen, it was very incredible. I also really liked the scene with Law and Owen in the doctor's office, that was just awesome. After seeing this film I want to see it again, and I'm sure I will watch it at least 3 more times before I take it back on wednesday, and I will probably buy it very soon. I knew beforehand that I would like it, but I did not expect to adore it the way I did. It's a masterpiece, and I just think the dialogue is some of the best I have ever heard in this type of movie. I am so glad I had the chance to experience the brilliance of this film, and it is a film I will not forget.

I think Law just wasn't as good. Not to say he's a bad actor, but he didn't seem great at all compared to his other roles he was much better in. He was amazing in Gattaca as well as in Talented Mr. Ripley, but in Closer he was outshined by Clive Owen by far and away (who I consider the most dislikable character in the movie).

Closer (2004)
What an amazing film. Certainly one of the best films of 2004. A very deep movie that is certainly far better then it seems on the surface.

8.7/10 (A)

Damn, all this love after the award show. Didn't Closer lose my one or two votes in some cases? Oh well, it's great that it's getting a lot of great reviews because it really is an excellent film.

I voted for it for best ensemble, and like I said..there's just no competition in the category. (maybe Sideways, haven't seen it). Definitely Dogville but it wasn't nominated and was only seen by like 6 people. :P

But yeah. It was painful to see it lose out on so many categories by jsut one or two votes.

I was hesitant to post comments on this for a specific reason. I wanted to like it, obviously, but I've also become very conscious of being perceived as if I'm soft on grading, because I've liked every dang movie that's been recommended to me, and the more that I watch, and then post a grade for, the more I worry if anybody is starting not to take me seriously, and all I can say is, I have given as honest a grade in each case that I possibly could have. If I don't like something (and I am almost to the point of hoping that happens), I'll be shouting it from the rooftops.

With that said, I really REALLY liked Closer. It doesn't have a plot, which I usually demand, but the characters where all so well written, and their relationships completely held my interest. Larry was my favorite, of course. Reminded me a bit of myself. I see an Oscar in Clive Owen's future. I loved the way he got back at Daniel (Jude Law), and I would have done the same thing if I was in that position. Natalie Portman was really impressive. Julia Roberts, my one time least favorite actress until the twins gave her large breasts  , was good, as always, and Jude Law was quite sickening as Daniel, which, I'm sure, was how the role was intended. The little chat online was quite funny, as it's always in the back of every guy's mind that the girl on the other end is really a guy. Great performances and a well written script dealing with character relationships.

Best review i've read in here, I agree, well for the most part

No depth or substance, dull, boring, lifeless, etc. The "truths" about relationships that the movie attempts to reveal are just nuggets of stereotypical nonsense that you could see in a TV movie(Men thrive on conquest and dominance, Women can't resist being treated like whores, etc.). The film, like it's characters is shallow and dishonest underneath the exterior. Some movie are bad by accident, this was meant to be awful.

It really is a love or hate movie and usually I see why people can like the movie, but in this case I have no freakin idea why so many people here love the movie.

Terrible film. I hated it. Everything about it. Especially it's artificiality. D-

Resort to the Oxford English Dictionary next time in search for a more apt description, because the term you offered to sum up the film is far off the mark.

Since we're still in Oscar mood (well, I am), I'll just say that Closer turns out to be the second most memorable movie of 2004 (Before Sunset is still No. 1). It's now a solid A instead of the A- I had before and should've won KJ awards.

Now here is something I can agree with :)

What an underrated underrated movie it turned out to be.

Post Re: Closer
I would have loved you forever...

This is one of my all-time favorite films. I loved it when I saw it in theaters, but I've come to love it even more with every viewing on DVD. It's my favorite film about relationships. I loved its unflinching honesty.

The acting is superb, especially from Portman, who is amazing. Also great are Roberts and Owen. Law is fine, but easily the weak link.

The dialogue is terrific and absolutely fascinating. The cinematography is excellent too. This is just an absolutely superb film. I'm kind of itching to check it out on Blu-ray and see how it looks/sounds in hi-def.

Anyway, it's fantastic and underrated. One of the very best of 2004.
