Re: Japan Box Office: Orange's Weekly Breakdown
boxac50 wrote: Hi, don´t you know the 01/09-10 weekend numbers (in dollars or yen) for the movie Orange - were they higher or lower than the estimation? Slightly higher (2.1%). The actuals from that weekend were very delayed due to Monday's holiday, so I forgot to post them later in the week. Here's its weekly breakdown thus far: 01 (---) ¥311,778,900 ($2.58 million), 0, ¥311,778,900 ($2.58 million) 03 (01) ¥244,411,600 ($2.02 million), -22%, ¥818,839,700 ($6.71 million) 03 (03) ¥209,185,400 ($1.74 million), -14%, ¥1,450,356,800 ($11.96 million) 03 (03) ¥168,658,900 ($1.40 million), -19%, ¥2,102,562,500 ($17.36 million) 05 (03) ¥138,931,200 ($1.18 million), -18%, ¥2,559,124,600 ($21.27 million) 04 (05) ¥105,738,600 ($903,000), -24%, ¥2,829,991,500 ($23.49 million) Orange is the most successful shojo/josei manga adaptation so far this decade. 59% of its gross has come from its weekday earnings. It also became the fourth highest-grossing shojo/josei manga adaptation ever two weeks ago, and the second highest grossing strictly shojo release (behind only the blockbuster hit Boys Over Flowers). It'll certainly exceed the ¥3 billion milestone, and could hit the mark over the upcoming weekend (though it'll probably fall just shy). I have it finishing with ~¥3.3 billion ($27/28 million) on 2.8 million admissions, for a multiplier of 10.5/10.6.

So, as a result, some of the weekend drops this weekend could be stronger than what I'm predicting based on pre-sales and Saturday morning/afternoon ticket sales. > Nobunaga Concerto, from Hiroaki Matsuyama, based on the Fuji TV drama and manga series, has some impressive pre-sales and Saturday morning/afternoon ticket sales, and is almost certain to dethrone Star Wars: The Force Awakens atop the box-office this weekend. If it can open anywhere close to or over ¥400 million, it'll have a good chance of earning over ¥2 billion, likely making it the biggest film from now until Spring rolls around. It's great news for Nobunaga, obviously, but disappointing for The Force Awakens since its reign on top will come to an end. If it had won this weekend, what would have been its sixth-consecutive in terms of gross, it'd have gone into February at #1 giving it at least eight-consecutive weeks on top. > The Walk is looking to debut reasonably well, and pre-sales would have to be way off for it to miss opening above ¥100 million. It may even have ¥150 million potential, but I'll meet that half-way. And after checking how absolutely terrible its performance was across the globe, Japan will easily be one of its best markets ($5 million+ is quite likely if it opens over ¥100 million), so probably only behind the U.S. > Persona 3 The Movie: No. 4, Winter of Rebirth is a limited release that has Top 10 potential but seeing as how it'll need to gross ~¥50 million+ to make it, it's unlikely. It's a dark horse though, and pre-sales are good, so don't be surprised if it earns a Top 10 debut either.

>Nobunaga Concerto crushed it yesterday. If Sunday doesn't decrease too much (>15%), there's a chance that it could reach 400,000 admissions, which would likely guarantee a ¥500 million debut. A potential debut of this level is very rare for January, and would give it one of the biggest openings for the month ever. I'll put together a list later, but I'm thinking Top 5 based on my recollection. And in any event, a debut above ¥400 million is certainly happening now.
>Shuriken Sentai Ninninger vs Ressha Sentai ToQger: Ninjas in Wonderland is doing as expected and is on track for a debut around ¥100 million, if not slightly less since its avg. ticket prices are very low each year. It should make the Top 5, but I don't believe it'll beat either Paddington or Yo-Kai Watch due to the series frontload nature.
>The Walk didn't perform as well as pre-sales were suggesting. In fact, they represented a whopping 40% of its admissions. That's very unusual for a film that shouldn't have any rush factor. It depends on the film, but most films' pre-sales represent 20% or less of their first day admissions.

>Nobunaga Concerto managed to pull of an increase on Sunday, giving it a very, very impressive debut weekend. It very likely sold over 400,000 admissions, so an opening over ¥500 million is also very likely. Sunday increases for live-action films on opening weekend are fairly uncommon, so this is an early indication that legs might be above average.
I'll post Weekend Estimates soon.

(C)石井あゆみ/小学館 (C)2016 フジテレビジョン 小学館 東宝 FNS27社Weekend Estimates (01/23-24)/2016年01月23日-2016年01月24日01 (--) ¥540,000,000 ($4.6 million), 0, ¥540,000,000 ($4.6 million), Nobunaga Concerto (Toho) NEW 02 (01) ¥290,000,000 ($2.5 million), -25%, ¥9,600,000,000 ($79.1 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) WK6 03 (--) ¥100,000,000 ($840,000), 0, ¥100,000,000 ($840,000), Shuriken Sentai Ninninger/Ressha Sentai ToQger: Ninjas in Wonderland (Toei) NEW 04 (02) ¥98,000,000 ($825,000), -39%, ¥5,145,000,000 ($43.2 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) WK6 05 (03) ¥97,000,000 ($820,000), -25%, ¥330,000,000 ($2.9 million), Paddington (Kino Films) WK2 06 (05) ¥71,000,000 ($600,000), -32%, ¥255,000,000 ($2.2 million), Les Saisons (Gaga) WK2 07 (--) ¥70,000,000 ($590,000), 0, ¥70,000,000 ($590,000), The Walk (Sony) NEW 08 (04) ¥63,000,000 ($530,000), -40%, ¥2,935,000,000 ($24.4 million), Orange (Toho) WK7 09 (06) ¥52,000,000 ($435,000), -45%, ¥600,000,000 ($5.1 million), Kizumonogatari - Part 1: Blood and Iron (Toho Video Division) WK3 10 (08) ¥51,000,000 ($425,000), -35%, ¥560,000,000 ($4.8 million), Bridge of Spies (Fox) WK3
>Nobunaga Concerto appears to have delivered a significant opening weekend, almost certainly above the ¥500 million mark. It ends the #1 steak of The Force Awakens, and did so by achieving one of the highest debuts for this time of year ever. Also, the fact that a film already this year could reach the ¥3 billion milestone gives 2016 an excellent start.
>Star Wars: The Force Awakens falls to second place, but continues to hold well and is coming ever closer to the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster mark. It has also outgrossed Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones, and still has plenty left to earn in the coming months.
>The Walk is off to a mediocre start, which is a shame since pre-sales were indicating a opening quite a bit higher. If its premium format showings were popular, it may com in a little higher than the estimate above, but not much higher.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (01/23-24)
Actuals were mostly in-line with estimates this weekend, however, Nobunaga Concerto improved once again on projections/expectations. It ended up delivering the second biggest January opening weekend of all-time (gross and admissions).
Actuals will be posted shortly.

>Nobunaga Concerto debuts well-above expectations, delivering the second-biggest January opening weekend of all-time in both revenue and admissions. Hiroaki Matsuyama's film adaptation of the Fuji TV drama sold an incredible 465,956 tickets over the weekend across 325 screens.
Achieving the second-biggest January opening weekend ever is impressive enough, but the debut also comes in higher than every domestic live-action film from 2015 after only Hero 2. Nobunaga Concerto is a lock to reach the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone, and has a solid chance of even hitting the ¥4 billion ($35 million+) milestone. It's going to set a very high bar for the upcoming Spring releases to reach.
>Star Wars: The Force Awakens slips to second place after enjoying five-consecutive weeks atop the box office, but that's hardly disappointing news.
After six weeks in release, it has outgrossed Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones, has sold 6.16 million admissions, and will become only the second live-action film this decade to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone next week.
>Shuriken Sentai Ninninger/Ressha Sentai ToQger: Ninjas in Wonderland gets the annual franchise back above the ¥100 million (and 100,000 admissions) mark, up 23% over last year's release, selling 105,991 tickets on 317 screens over the weekend.
>The Walk saw a minuscule increase over estimates and still has a pretty disappointing opening weekend. Robert Zemeckis's latest only sold 41,986 tickets over the weekend on 592 screens. It was very popular on premium format screens, achieving an incredibly high avg. ticket price of ¥1,702.

Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Film Franchises (Updates)
I was too occupied to post a Weekend Forecast yesterday, but I'll post Saturday's admissions from the Usual Locations later today.
Based on Saturday alone, this weekend is looking very impressive. Nobunaga Concerto is in store for an incredible second weekend atop the box-office (aiming for ¥500 million!); and distributor Toei looks to finally have a live-action film score a good debut with Saraba Abunai Deka: Long Goodbye targeting ¥250 million+. Most of the holdovers are also holding very, very well, too.
So far, January 2016 is more than delivering the goods at the box-office.

>Nobunaga Concerto is experiencing an excellent second weekend after delivering the second biggest debut in the month of January last weekend. If Sunday is also strong, it has a good chance of earning over ¥500 million in its second frame and is well on its way to exceed the ¥3 billion milestone, if not ¥3.5 billion or even ¥4 billion at this pace. Talk about an early breakout for 2016!
>Saraba Abunai Deka: Long Goodbye is performing quite well, and looks to earn Toei one of its biggest debuts for a live-action film in quite some time. If we exclude the Kamen Rider films, then Saraba Abunai Deka should give Toei their biggest live-action debut in several years as it's on track for ¥250 million+.
>Black Mass isn't fairing too well, and appears to be coming in on the lower-end of expectations. Without Johnny Depp, however, this film probably wouldn't be coming anywhere near the Top 5. It's aiming for an opening right around the ¥100 million mark, which will likely be decided by its avg. ticket price.
>The Inerasable is doing alright, falling in-line with what everyone pretty much was expecting for the weekend.
Most of the holdovers are holding very, very well this weekend, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is even eyeing a possible increase, or at least a minuscule decline in its seventh weekend. It will exceed the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster mark on Sunday, its 45th day in release. I'll post a list on how that compares to other uber-blockbusters sometime tomorrow.

Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions
I was having some computer issues the past couple days, so I wasn't able to post any updates.
I'll have the weekend actuals (very good weekend), 2016 charts, etc., up in a couple hours.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (01/30-31)

>Nobunaga Concerto remains atop the box-office in its second weekend, and has done so in incredible fashion. The historical time-twist tale remained nearly flat with its opening weekend (the second highest ever in the month of January), selling 461,321 admissions, and delivered the third biggest overall weekend in January in its second frame. Quite stunning, and that's without any holiday support.
And with weekdays that almost matched its weekend earnings as well, its two-week total is more than high enough to lock up ¥3 billion ($25 million+), and the chances of actually exceeding ¥4 billion (~$35 million) has gone way up. It's quite rare for a January release to earn this much, but here we are.
>Saraba Abunai Deka: Long Goodbye got off to a good, surprisingly so, start by nearly opening to ¥300 million. The Hiroshi Tachi and the Kyohei Shibata lead adaptation of the hit 1980s detective drama sold an impressive 217,273 tickets on 252 screens, giving Toei their best non-Kamen Rider debut for a live-action film since 2011.
Saraba Abunai Deka should be good for a gross of ¥2 billion ($16-18 million), which while not as impressive as Nobunaga Concerto's performance, is still quite good for this time of year.
>Star Wars: The Force Awakens falls to third place, but having barely dropped in its second weekend, is still grossing very impressive numbers.
And most importantly, it has exceeded the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion after its 45th day in release, making it only the second live-action film since 2010 to achieve this milestone. Also, since its still bringing in very favorable numbers, it's probably safe to project it'll exceed ¥11 billion ($90-95 million) now as well. Major achievement for Disney, and it's unlikely any film this year surpass it.
>Black Mass debuts in fourth place, selling 86,195 admissions across 265 screens over the weekend. The opening is on par with that of Transcendence, but 22% behind that of last year's Mordecai.
Johnny Depp is the only reason these films are opening above ¥100 million, but this debut is still a bit disappointing considering Warner Bros. is much larger distribution company than Pony Canyon or Kadokawa.
>The Inerasable settled for fifth place but having also opening above ¥100 million, its debut is also decent, especially for a horror film. Based on Fuyumi Ono's mystery novel, the film adaptation sold 82,182 tickets on 221 screens. Not bad.
