The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained are both bloody westerns from Tarantino. I missed the part where one is more mainstream than the other, besides the fact Hateful Eight didn't look very good.

Leonardo DiCaprio has more starpower and mainstream-appeal than the entire cast of The Hateful Eight taken together and Christoph Waltz was coming off an Oscar-winning, beloved turn in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

H8 was hurt greatly by the release of DVD quality rips of the screener on line. The Revenant will face the same problem. These were not poor quality cams that hit the internet before theater release. They were DVD quality copies according to many blogs on line, add in the fact that both are drama/acting movies and the need for the big screen is reduced.

The push for votes for awards is admirable, however it should not come at the expense of revenue. The fact that so many in Hollywood cannot get off their ass and go to a movie in the theater is sad. I am not talking about the handful of true A listers who may find it just too much trouble to venture out for a quiet evening, I am talking about the 95% of people who receive these DVDs who the general public wouldn't recognize if they sat next to them.

I have thought the process is stupid for years. Why on earth would you allow digital copies of your movie out into the public before wide release. Screeners need to end, maybe this year will make the Weinsteins wake up.

Agree completely. The value awards (Oscars) give to these larger more star driven studio efforts is minimal these days.

Time to give up the screeners until IMO. Or just release the quailty films all year round and be done with it.

Dont forget that after the mega success of Pulp Fiction (adjusts to $211m) - his long awaited follow-up Jacki Brown disappointed. Adjusts to $70m - a third of Pulp's ticket sales (overshadowed by Titanic perhaps...).

Here Hateful Eight is likely to end up with a similar retention of Django's ticket sales (perhaps slightly more).

I wonder if QT will finally revisit Kill Bill vol 3. By the time it comes out - Verneeta Green's daughter would be in her late teens/early 20's in real time lol.

American Sniper had high-quality screeners leaked as well.

Exactly. I also think people underestimate how Foxx, Washington, and Jackson really helped Django become more urban friendly and diverse than Tarantino's other films. Not saying he doesn't already have a pretty diverse fanbase, but it definitely got a lot of media attention on more black themed networks than usual.

And Django also came off the goodwill of Inglorious Basterds too.

Hateful was never going to outgross QT's last two films based on the film itself and the cast. I think it will do 60-70m which is good.

The audience for a Tarantino movie is a lot more likely to bootleg a movie than the audience that made American Sniper a juggernaut (heck, most of that audience probably doesn't even know how to torrent). I mean, I think the effect of screener leaks is a bit overstated, but I've heard about soooooo many who torrented the movie (anecdotally, I mean). It probably put a minor dent in its box office.

That's a good comparison to Yogi Bear for Alvin. That one did $100m and I think Alvin should do it as well considering that KFP3, the biggest animation competition this January is also distributed by Fox.

Yogi held really well though and didn't have much competition for theaters.

Yogi fell 46% on its 4th weekend and did great on MLK weekend. I don't see how Alvin cannot hold that good considering there are quite a few Fox releases running now as well.

Django is a way more commercially friendly film than Hateful Eight, yes that may not have been as visible in the marketing as when people see the film, but I think to some extent people could tell that this was going to be a darker quieter Tarantino

You can't tell the difference between marketing a film around Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L Jackson and Kurt Russell?

Well, starpower doesn't make or break a film. Personally, I just think the Hateful Eight didn't look very good. I doubt many people saw Django just because Dicaprio was in it.

The drop after new years can be larger because it is coming after the holidays. Alvin might drop 50%.

Its the same 2nd weekend of the year like Yogi's where it fell 46%. Why can't Alvin have the same drop or better? I am not arguing that Alvin will not drop 50% here but I don't see a reason why it couldn't drop "only" 46%

Yogi's weekend was deflated by NYE being on Friday. Also Yogi held better overall than any of the Alvin movies have so far. The first Alvin had the same weekday pattern although it was released one week later. It had a mult of over 2.8 from this point. It was earlier in the run, but the first week frontloading was already out of the way. The last Alvin had under 3.5, but NYE was on Sat, deflating the weekend and inflating the multiplier. That history would suggest a mult near 3 for a total perhaps in the low 90s.

While I don't disagree on that you have to remember this one is holding MUCH better than previous films uptil now so that suggests it will do better.

It's difficult to compare because they had different release dates. When Friday falls on the 18th it is possible to have two straight increases, like with the Blind Side. The last Alvin was down about 24% over two holiday weeks, this one about 16%. But that one's weekend (Jan 6-8) didn't include New Years, plus it had burnt off the first week rush before, so again, it is difficult to compare.

I was talking in terms of multiplier as you were talking about the same going forward.

Same thing. Multiplier has so much to do with exact release date at this time of the year, that it says more about the daily holiday pattern than it does about staying power.
