I think that in order to know if the movie has captured or recreated that sense of magic you have to ask people that had previously very little or no knowledge of the original films thus limiting the poll probably to only small kids.
Everyone else had expectations, and when you have those, I feel the sense of awe and wonder goes missing, as it involves that the movie reaches some requirements to fulfill that quota.
The reason the original movies achieved that, especially ANH, was that there was really nothing like it before and also due to the lack of the communication tools that we have today, it caught everyone by surprise, it literally came out of nowhere.
Today, with teasers and trailers being shown a year in advance and then every frame, character name, music cue, etc. being analyzed to the extreme, I think the sense of wonder and discovery is lost.
I dunno. It may have taken two hours to get there, but Jurassic World absolutey managed it with the Trex/blue vs Indominus fight. Nothing in Force Awakens made me feel like that, despite being an overall better film.

You're the second person to mention Jurassic World. I still haven't seen it, so I can't comment, but will do after I get a chance.
However, it seems you mention one specific scene and not the film as a whole. TFA has one of those magic scenes for me (the light saber ending in you know who hands), but it's just a little percentage of its runtime. But I can also agree with the ones that mention that nostalgia makes a lot of past things look better than they really were thus making it unfair for new stuff to get a fair treatment.

Driver's acting is fine. His haircut is repulsive. They may as well have cast The Weeknd.

One thing that really bothered was how Chewie and Carrie walk right past each other after Han dies. That could have been the big emotional wallop I was waiting for. I guess its equally as offensive as not giving Chewbacca the medal in New Hope so the trend continues. :funny:

Carrie Fisher is just not Leia anymore. It feels strange to see the hilarious, self-deprecating, boozy, cynical, acidic performer she has become (more stand-up comedian than actress) try to play regal and square again.

But there's no connective tissue. There's no drive. THE PHANTOM MENACE isn't moving toward a climax. It's a film with a stunning lack of narrative momentum.

They're trying to defeat the Trade Federation and save Naboo.

The Force Awakens plot is A New Hope. At least The Phantom Menace tried to be different.

The reason I like the Phantom Menace is because of The podrace, the Darth Maul fight, seeing the Jedi council for the first time, the underwater gungan world is awesome, I actually find the gungans endearing, Jar Jar has always actually been a character I've found cute. "Wesa goin home!" gets quoted in my house all the time. I also find the political stuff interesting; it's part of why I like Mockingjay Part 1. Boss Nass' jowel raspberry is great too. The costumes are beautiful, Natalie Portman is hot, Watto is a cool character, I like the two headed podrace announcer, I like how Anakin is a virgin child like Christ, I like the Neimoidians. It's a film with a lot of great parts. The only faults in my eyes are the lack of development for Qui Gon and Obi Wan.

You don't have to like it, but the Phantom Menace will always be one in my DVD rotation. I promise you I'm not trolling. If liking The Phantom Menace makes me stupid, then stupid it is.

I hope the sequels to this film have a stronger sense of...planetary individuality. In the widely maligned Phantom Menace, Naboo feels very specific as a place populated by peoples with cultural histories. The same is true of Tatooine and Coruscant. None of the planets in The Force Awakens register. Jakku is obviously just Tatooine 2.0. D'Qar is...Hoth with trees?

Planetary individuality has never been a strength of the franchise.

It should be. He has a tin ear for dialogue, but George Lucas did a great job in the original trilogy and particularly the prequels envisioning new worlds and cultures.

Loved:

- Millennium Falcon reveal
- Finn and Rey relationship
- Lack of grating characters

Meh:

- Not enough Oscar Issac
- Leia sounds like she spent 30 years smoking
- I hope we don't find out why C-3PO
Spoiler: show
has a red arm.

Question:
Spoiler: show
Were Han and Chewie on board a stolen First Order craft? I get the force brings together folks (I guess) but right after jumping in to hyperspace in the Millennium Falcon, who do Finn and Rey run into?

A-

I've been listening to the score, and it sucks asshole. No memorable new score except maybe Rey's theme, and even that is a stretch.

Those that dislike, or even hate, the prequels should give The Clone Wars TV series a go. It's considered canon, and it really brings everything together. There's a good amount of appreciation to be had for the franchise outside of the original trilogy of films.

So many thoughts before I can give it a grade.

Spoiler: show
the good:
-Ford finally got his wish and killed Solo. Great death scene.
-Driver was fantastic - so glad they didn't mess around with trying to keep his real face a mystery
-Ridley was also fantastic.
-loved the lightsaber battle between a weakened Ren and two inexperienced lightsaber-wielders

The bad:
-another death star taken out with no suspense
-The aliens. So horrible - none felt believable and nearly all of them looked terrible. Snoke and Maz being the obvious standouts as horrible (and pointless) CGI.
-the ending shot. Empire had a great cliffhanger by setting pieces in motion - this felt like cutting out right at the start of a conversation which felt cheap
-the need for winks (the chess game being the most obnoxious)

Enjoyed it more the 2nd time - probably an A- for now.

Rey grabbing the lightsaber truly is a powerful moment.

My thoughts on the aliens changed a bit - everyone that was non-CGI were interesting (with the exception of the always terrible Nien Numb). The execution of Snoke, Maz, and the Rey's vendor dude were weak. Their designs were close enough to human, so it seems baffling that they decided to go down the CGI route. I'm not anti-CGI completely, but they felt too cartoony to feel truly believable.

Loved this,

Rey is gold, BB 8 is gold, Finn and the rest of the new cast are gold
My biggest complaint would be the happy ending in Episode VI and the beginning of this film, there wasn't explanation about wtf happened????

A+
