I'm not saying HP should have been nominated for BP. I'm simply saying that SW having 90% at RT means absolutely nothing for its Oscar prospects.

I kind of wonder if Potter had come out in November or December if it could have scored a BP nomination. I kind of think it got forgotten that year.

It probably wouldn't be hard to justify that Potter should have gotten a BP nom in the year that saw War Horse and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close get in.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had 96% at RT and 87% at Metacritic. With a higher (8.3) average rating. So if you think Star Wars is going to get nominated, it's purely because of the box office? Of course Star Wars is "essential American cinema" or whatever, and it's the "first franchise" but Empire Strikes Back couldn't even get a nomination, and the is widely considered the high watermark of the franchise.

The Force Awakens has an 8.3 (95% vs 96%, not much of a difference) as well. H8ta gotta do some research. I consider Potter7.1and7.2s lack of nomination yet an other stain on the asscar rep.

Did Potter make the AFI top 10 that year?

It had an 8.2 rating when I checked. It went up. So it has an equal average rating, but a higher overall percentage, and at MC.

It doesn't matter, because I think DH2 is an overall superior film in every respect, mainly because its not a glorified remake.

It's also not actually a movie, but simply one large showdown without a beginning or a middle. Had DH been one movie, its chances would have been better.

Just like Empire doesn't have a beginning or end.

And your point is? Was ESB nominated for Best Picture?

No but TFA apparently will be.

I really hope Mad MAx gets in over TFA. Even if I found Star Wars more interesting overall, Mad Max is far more artful in its action and visuals than TFA, besides the cool creatures.

Not gonna lie: I mixed these ones up with the NBR Top 10, so I was wondering why a thread from three weeks ago had suddenly morphed into another zwack debate about Star Wars.

At any rate, though, I'm surprised by how well Straight Outta Compton has done thus far. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I didn't think it would get any awards season support whatsoever.
