Post Re: Early Friday Numbers (Update Page 3)
Random trivia in case anyone is mildly interested, last weekend was the worst attended December weekend since Dec 4-6, 1987 when Three Men And A Baby led a top 12 tally that adjusts today to $64.8 m. So it was the worst December attended weekend in 28 YEARS!

By contrast, this weekend will do $284 m + to be the biggest adjusted December weekend of all time and likely $294 m to be the biggest weekend EVER adjusted.

I can't recall EVER seeing a box office weekend more than quadruple. We could see it grow 4.3 X.

BJ does

The force is strong in AK fo sho :D

The map favors wealthier states those with fewer densely populated cites - since the data comes from facebook, it makes sense that those would be places with more facebook use.

It strikes me as silly that certain states would have higher SW popularity than others with any level of significance.

Alaska has the highest ratio of males to females with 109 to 100 in the US.

Nice stat! Though last weekend did 77.4m, so total wouldn't multiply that much, but still yeah there's another shattering - certainly the biggest total market multiple from one week to the next ever!

Good catch! I just looked at top 12 for adjusted tallies. I assume this weekend top 12 is the majority total since its so top heavy!

Post Re: Early Friday Numbers (Update Page 3)
Ok, I guess should have been more organized when I started charting these numbers, but I thought it would just be all sell-outs after awhile.

I go back and forth between percentages and total number of seats.

AMC Tysons Corner 16

4:00-95% Full
4:45-80-85% Full
5:30-18 seats unsold
6:00-45 seats unsold
6:30-28 seats unsold
7:05-46 seats unsold
6:30-5 seats unsold
7:50-26 seats unsold

Ok, at this point I noticed shows were not selling out at show time. So, I wrote down all the rest of the shows and occupancy at the time 7:30.

8:20-33 seats unsold-Final count-57 seats unsold
9:00-6 seats unsold-Final count-7 seats unsold
9:30-29 seats unsold-Final count-10 seats unsold
10:00-48 seats unsold-Final count-39 seats unsold
10:30-51 seats unsold-Final count-16 seats unsold
11:20-50% Full-73% Full
11:45-55% Full-65% Full
12:10-20-25% Full-32% Full
12:30-70% Full-78% Full
12:45-4 tickets sold-15 tickets sold
1:00 (a)-45% sold-70%
1:00 (b)-3 tickets sold- 5 tickets sold
1:15-24 tickets sold-49 tickets sold

As I have stated, I am rusty and reserved seating may have changed late night sales in the past few years. However, I find it hard to believe JW and Avengers sold so few tickets after 7:30.

Does anyone else find this pattern odd or disconcerting?

Wow. In The Heart of The Sea is a mega flop.

Spotlight got hit harder than I expected it to.

Krampus is holding a bit better than I thought it would in the face of Star Wars.

That's really good for Alvin. In this case I think spillover business definitely helped. I don't think it would have done better in a less competitive weekend.

Pretty good for Sisters. Holiday legs will be very, very good to it.

They're saying 125-127M+. Want to see it at least hit 127M, that'd be 70M on Friday proper.

It's possible TFA could challenge Avatar's WW. :noway:

Forget about trying to dissect Thursday previews from Friday. It's all Friday. If TFA had only midnight-3AM showings, you would see these numbers (assuming there was capacity). Again, it's all Friday.

So $40m is out? Will it get a second life when the awards season comes?

Sisters will likely finish with $90+ million.

It may just be saturation issue, the film is getting over 80 showings per day here in Anchorage, most large blockbusters land in the 50-60 range here, the film is still selling out a lot of shows but many are ending up 65%-85% full because of the saturation.

final friday tally (anchorage, ak)

Sellouts: 29 (started the day with 23 sellouts before the first 9am showing)
Showings: 81

pretty epic friday, 5 less confirmed sellouts than the thursday previews while also have nearly 25 more showings.

As of now Saturday looks like

Sold Out: 21
Showings: 80

If it follows the same trajectory as Friday we should be able to confirm another 5-10 sellouts. Unfortunately the only showings with reserved seating left that are not playing it in 3D are either sold out or the remaining seats suck.

RTH had said HR had projected based on 50% sample which included pre-sales for later shows. So the number was skewed.

FWIW, Fandango was not listing a considerable amount of AMC's reserved seating sellouts. There were a total of 39 shows at Tysons last night, Fandango listed ~34 I believe. There were 5 or 6 sellouts that occurred much earlier that they removed from listing that were however, showing up on MovieTickets.com as crossed out shows. If you check the AMC Empire 25 on 42nd, same deal. Friday was listed at 64 shows on Fandango but there were 7 sellouts missing, it was actually 71 shows total.

Also 7:05 at Tysons had 20 tickets unsold, I was in it and only the middle of the front row was empty. More tickets were sold during trailers, cause folks were still filing in after 7:05. Can't say for the rest.

I only used MovieTickets.com. If it wasn't obvious (I didn't make it very clear), the movies were haphazardly checked 15-20 minutes before showtime. Movies like Avatar would sell out when they got that full. After 7:30, I checked every movie within 5 minutes of showtime, often 7-8 minutes after until it shut me out as no longer available. I have never seen anything like it other than maybe the last HP, which is not good for legs. However, TDKR is the last movie, I really sampled like this, so maybe late nights have changed for massive openers.
