Hmm I think those early numbers are definitely being skewed by presales. Coming out the theatre there was still a whole bunch of people getting their tickets from the help desk, but I didn't see too many at the booths outside. When I came in there were like 60 people all going to the same help desk as well. Still $115-$120M would be an incredible result.

$350 m + film in January that ends up winning the year despite January usually being a dumping ground? Check.

February movie about Lego being the top animated movie of the year? Check.

Launching a superhero movie in April and doing $250 m + despite the fact that they do better in the summer? Check.

Seeing a 7th movie in a franchise do $350 m + in April and $1.5 B worldwide despite April being known as a dumping ground? Check.

August movie winning the summer despite being odd superheroes with $330 m + and being in a traditional dumping ground? Check.

Seeing a $270 m + space movie in October? Check.

What did Oct 2013-Aug. 2014 teach us all? That the calendar is meaningless in the case of the right event film. 4 of the top 5 films in 2014 opened during non-traditional months for mega-blockbusters. The rules of box office YESTERDAY are not always defining the rules of today!

So can it be that surprising that a SW movie, let alone in December, completely surpassed expectations on what a "December movie" can do?

December event movie that everyone wants to see in the age of FOMO immediately potentially tripling the OW record for the month? Check!

Who cares. I've always said it doesn't even need to break the OW to be in contention for No.1 all time. It's looking to smash the OW record by a good 10% at least. So just wait for the mega BO to come over the next month.

I think the jury is still out on how front or back loaded this film is. Some people are spacing out their viewing of this film, but others obviously are not. I don't know how we have a handle on this film until we get more daily information, the holidays will help. However, how much of the first week or so are people that pre-ordered tickets? How much of it's first $250-300m was already in the pipeline?

SW7 shattered previews record by 30%. Similar performance for friday would take its OD to 145m. But 130m is more likely. It would be crazy to see single day increasing that much. That has increased quite gradually in the past(SM3 did 50m back in 2007).

Yes the movie business is a year round one for blockbusters.

I wonder if they will move Episode 8 or even GOTG2. They really shouldn't open a few weeks apart.

I so want one HYPED sequel opening in September. Can we get a big OW that month already? SHA adjusts now to $52 m and Rush Hour to $59 m so big openings are doable for the right film.

I can believe these numbers judging by how insanely busy the theater was today. There were separate lines to designate different showtimes just to handle the crowd.

Still early. I think the West Coast will come through in a big way. Jurassic World at the same time was projected to do $70m and ended up at $82m. Similar percentage jump by the end of the night would put SW7 at $145-150m.

Star Wars is proportionnally more popular in West Coast America so final results could well increase.

Could have sworn CA would be higher. That's where Skywalker ranch and so much SW stuff is!

It will happen soon I'd say. Perhaps move one of next summers films. It's crowded.

I don't see how a 120m OD only leads to a 215m OW. 225m seems the very low end for a 120m OD.

Disney is just covering their ass after what happened with Ultron. "The weekend record is in sight" on Friday evening...came up $17m short in actuals.

A 120 OD with HPDH2 holds would lead to a $223M OW. Overly conservative. But that way when they get an even higher result they'll be able to boast about it.

A lot of people are shopping online these days. Just like the pre-sales.

Eh. Remember when I mentioned how the locals were setting off fireworks every night that JW broke a record? I haven't heard a single pop for SW7 yet.

This is because, due to the magnitude of public acceptance of this motion picture, Nukes are dangerous. They don't want to blow us to smitherines.

Disney is the company Hollywood warns us about in their sci-fi movies.

Disgusting corporation.

Someone should make a movie where Disney takes over the government and every year, the citizens are forced to worship a large golden statue of BB-8.
