He's been lost to the Fanboy Side, where movies are sporting events and you root for one team and against all the others. Once you start down that path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Sellout/Crowd Report Thread
In my local areas Previews are likely ahead of TDKR already.
The reason I think that is simply far more showtimes and still many sellouts.
With far more showtimes this does not have to sellout like crazy like DH2 or TDKR to break records.

I think it is fitting this is opening on the 10 year anniversary of the film I am coming to find the best comparison in some ways - KING KONG. Media exaggerated overall public anticipation for that one and I am getting a similar vibe. Expecting an unbreakable December record of $165 million, and a kickass movie to boot, but these people saying "1 billion domestic" or "2.b world wide"....yeah. TPM doesn't even inflate anywhere near there, and I assure you...buzz in 2015 is not what it was in 1999.

King Kong might be the worst comparison yet.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Sellout/Crowd Report Thread
The buzz was huge in 99 but its at least just as big now. If anything - sequels are more genuinely anticipated than prequels in general.

I don't know if this is more hype than EPISODE I or less hype, but the hype level is absolutely comparable.

TL;DR (details after):
I'm tracking 7 theaters in Kansas City. (I will check tonight to see if any more sell out, but that'll be it; I'm headed to KC on Amtrak tomorrow morning and won't have internet until I come home after Christmas)
2D - 4/4, 18/20, 14/17, 2/14, 4/7, 0/2, 1/4 = 43/68 (63%) 3D - 3/3, 7/9, 8/9, 0/16, 1/10, 0/2, 0/2 = 19/51 (37%) IMAX - 2/3, 2/3, 2/3 = 6/9 (67%)

Excel, do you seriously, really believe this will open to less than $150 million?

Excel also claimed recently that Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet have more box office pull than Jennifer Lawrence in 2015, so...y'know.

Is this like when everyone argued with me about Leo being a draw and I won that, like most arguments?

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Advance Ticket Sales “Staggering”http://deadline.com/2015/12/star-wars-t ... 201667547/'The movie is also Fandango’s top advance ticket-seller as they report it has obliterated all records, outselling all previous titles in the company’s 15-year history at the same point in the Fandango sales cycle. At this point in the sales cycle, MovieTickets.com is noting that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sold more than double the number of advance tickets to the recent blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron, 20% more than Jurassic World, and a third more than the last Star Wars installment, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.'

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Sellout/Crowd Report Thread
He probably is thinking that SW7 should by its nature have far more advanced sales than JW. Ultron disproves this theory though.
I still think its a huge number and well positioned to hit 200m+ OW as a minimum which in December is more impressive than the same in summer.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Sellout/Crowd Report Thread
We have HR reporting advance ticket sales are over $100M. So either MT is accounting for a disproportionately small amount of Star Wars ticket sales, or that statement from MT is not very clear on what they consider advance sales.
