Post Sisters (Fey/Poehler) Predictions
Trailer:

This is the one film opening in wide release up against The Force Awakens, and honestly it's an extremely smart release date. For starters, counterprogramming against mega-openers with an appealing project can work out really well, as shown to varying degrees by Walk the Line, Mamma Mia!, and The Blind Side. Second, multiplexes will be pretty barren by the time this opens, with only two wide releases in the previous two weeks. Plus, opening one week before Christmas guarantees that it's in theaters to the end of the year, and will give a few extra days to work its magic. Thirdly it'll the first movie aimed directly at women in over a month, since probably By the Sea (and we have yet to see how mainstream that will be).

With all that in mind, while Fey and Poehler aren't draws on their own in any way, combined they make for an extremely appealing pair - Baby Mama was a solid hit despite opening a week before Iron Man, their Hilary/Palin skits are among the most popular skits SNL has turned out in the last decade, and their hosting duties on the Golden Globes were a major help in boosting their flagging ratings. And this is purely anecdotal, but I posted the trailer on Facebook and it's received a lot of likes from non-cinephile friends.

So, I'm expecting this to do really well.

Opening: $21.4 million
Total: $109.6 million (5.12)

This will be big. And I agree that the release date is very smart. Fey and Poehler are both a lot bigger now than when they did Baby Mama.

The trailer is something mainstream audiences will eat up, plus there is very little competition outside of Star Wars. I could see it match It's Complicated.

It will do well with the target audience and even if the opening is soft opening in the middle of the holidays has always worked wonders for films like this. Like zwackerm said it could possibly match the gross of It's Complicated.

It is an easy sell for females. I guess it will make a good $85m.

Trailer worked much better seeing it in front of Trainwreck. Probably won't open as big as Mamma Mia (against TDK) but kudos to Universal for opening this against Episode VII, should be leggy.

It's good counter programming and should make 100m. Competition outside of SW and perhaps Joy isn't all that strong.

This has 100% at RT through 8 reviews. I haven't seen much marketing for it though. I hope it can crack 20 OW.

Thinking $10m OW would be good for it despite good reviews. Will be trampled by The Force and it's failed to gain traction on Twitter despite the leads having viable online followings.

Such an idiotic decision to not release this on this weekend.

Both Sisters and Alvin and the Chipmunks should have taken advantage of this weekend.

I think this is good counterprogramming, and I want to see it much, much more than Star Wars.

Same here. Star Wars doesn't even look very good.

I don't think it will be able to open over mid teens OW with SW overshadowing everything. But it will be very leggy and get around 100M anyway.

A low teens debut would even be enough for 100 million if it follows the trajectory of Saving Mr. Banks.

It should benefit greatly from Star Wars overflow. $30 million opening wouldn't surprise me.

It will definitely do low to mid teens for opening weekend. The target audience for this film are the ones that are the most distracted by Christmas Shopping. This usually leads to multipliers of at least 6 after opening weekend. It will have a soft drop the next weekend and the next one after that. I say if it opens to at least 14 million, it will hit 100 million before it's through. I say 14 million seems about right, which is very good for this time of year.

Are we sure people like Tina and Amy that much, cause I don't see the hook for this film other than them being in it

That is usually the case. The target audience is the most distracted by Christmas shopping.
