Thursday schedules Broadway/AMC
Palace APM | | |
New | Holdovers | Leaving |
The Martian 3D - 13 showings | The Intern - 7 showings (▼ 9) | The Beauty Inside |
The Martian - 1 showing | Office - 7 showings (=) | Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials |

Veteran - 1 showing | | Love Detective |
Note: all holdover showtimes in parentheses are from Tuesday for B/AMC only The Martian will start with 2-3 screens on Broadway/AMC. Pre-sales are a little underwhelming at the moment. Hotel Transylvania 2 will enter with half day showtimes. Pre-sales look OK but most will show only 2D for Hotel T 2 as opposed to 3D for The Martian. Holdovers aside from Intern and Office will get heavily cut this week. Intern gets 1 screen (3rd biggest). Office is left on the 4th biggest screen.
Cityplaza | | |
New | Holdovers | Leaving |
The Martian 3D - 7 showings | The Intern - 5 showings (▼ 7) | Office |
Hotel Transylvania 2 (3D Can.) - 1 showing | The Beauty Inside - 2 showings (▼ 5) | Northern Limit Line |

Dark Places - 3 showings | | |
Martian will only get 1 screen at UA. Hotel T gets 2 or 3 showtimes. Dark Places will be booked in almost every UA theater on 3 showtimes. Veteran/Transporter Refueled gets a few theaters but with 2-3 showtimes at each location. Intern remains on 1 screen. Office will leave a few UA theaters on Thursday. PK goes back into IMAX theaters but with only 2-3 showtimes. _______________________________________ The Walk will have special screenings starting on Saturday. Sicario previews begin on October 1. Now let's see how The Martian is doing...

Good start for The Martian. Based solely on these, I think it could get up to 50,000 admissions on Thursday. It still has a long way to go. I think it could potentially secure around 15,000 admissions if walk-ins are really brisk. 12,000 admissions should be its ballpark figure for today. Great for The Intern. Decent for Everest. Weak for Office. Maze Runner 2 is being rushed out quite quickly. Very good for PK. That looks terrible for Hotel Transylvania 2.

Note: These figures do not include the Monday holiday. Maze Runner 2 will pass 4m very soon. Everest will push for 2m this weekend. Intern seems headed for at least 2.5m with a chance at 3m. Dreadful for Attack on Titan 2. Its increase over last weekend's 2 day opening took 7 days. PK is slowly but surely on its way to 1m. Hotel Transylvania 2 is looking pretty good at the moment. It's looking like its 3-day (SSM) previews passed $150,000. Others: Inside Out passed 8.5m. Mission Impossible 5 has raked in 6.845m.

Awesome for The Martian. 50,000 is in the works for today. Very strong for The Intern. It and PK were the only 2 holdovers to beat last Thursday's final admissions with just its pre-sales. Good start for Hotel Transylvania 2. It's entirely possible that HT2's opening day beats HT's opening weekend. Whether HT2's opening weekend beats HT's final gross is a bit tougher. It will depend on walk-ins. OK for Everest. Bad for Office. Eh for Dark Places. Not good for Maze Runner 2. On the bright side, it looks like it will pass MR's final gross in a few days. Awful for Transporter Refueled/Attack on Titan 2. One last look for The Martian @ Festival Walk

Martian is certainly not lost. It will be aiming for 2m this week. Reviews are on the strong side with opening day reviews coming in at an average of 4.5/5. Intern is tearing it up. 3m is locked and 4m is possible. Not bad for Hotel Transylvania 2. It will at least double Hotel Transylvania's OW but reviews are not great at the moment with only a 3.7/5 to show for on opening day. OK for Everest. At least it increased but Office/Maze Runner 2 and Attack on Titan 2 did terribly. Attack on Titan 2 did so bad that 4 Broadway/AMC theaters are dropping this on Friday after Thursday's letdown. Meh for Dark Places. Great for PK. Transporter Refueled stunk.

Very good for The Martian. 2-day estimate stands at 1.1m. Excellent for The Intern. Better than expected for Hotel Transylvania 2. Both Everest and Office are done. This is the beginning of the end for them. Weekend holds will be bigger to accommodate Martian/Intern/Hotel Transylvania 2 business + special screenings of The Walk/Our Times/Sicario/Southpaw, etc. Dark Places did not do great on Friday. Transporter Refueled had the best decline on Friday of the top 10 but it started at such a low level on Thursday that even being flat would not turn around what will happen to it next week. It's one and done. Marvelous for PK. Horrible for Maze Runner 2/Attack on Titan 2.

Superb increase for The Martian. Very good for The Intern. I anticipated more in pre-sales for Hotel Transylvania 2. Maybe it'll double its Saturday pre-sales on Sunday. Bad for Everest. Strong sneak previews for Our Times. Could this pull another Apple of My Eye on October 15? It has increased in admissions every weekend since previews began. Great for PK. Office is turning into a disaster. Not good for Dark Places. The Walk is taking things very slowly. It looks like there is not much interest. Transporter Refueled was the only film to increase from Thursday's pre-sales. Still a flop though. By the way, 10 different films are having sneak peeks this weekend. Ridiculous.

A tropical storm is threatening HK this weekend. Admissions may be suppressed or inflated depending on the timing, proximity to HK and strength of the storm.

Stupid move to have scheduled two female-oriented films (The Intern and Office) on the same weekend.

Re: HK: Spectre aims for new heights; Our Times cume over 4m

Not a bad start for Spectre. It is slightly below Mission Impossible 5's opening day pre-sales and off 20% from Skyfall's opening day pre-sales. The running time is 5 minutes longer than Skyfall's which plays a big role when it comes to scheduling and of course pre-selling. Friday will be stronger than Skyfall's opening Friday. Our Times is doing well but those that were expecting round 2 of You Are the Apple of My Eye will be disappointed. You Are the Apple of My Eye's run was a once in a lifetime performance that will be extremely hard to replicate. Regardless, things are not looking up for Our Times this weekend as Spectre will take away screens from it on Saturday/Sunday.

Very good for Our Times. It obviously won't come close to You Are the Apple of My Eye but 5m will most likely happen. Bridge of Spies is doing well. HK had the best 2nd weekend hold of its current top 10 leaders last weekend. OK hold for Goosebumps. Poor for The Last Witch Hunter. Intern and Martian are both fading but both have amassed strong totals to date. HK is a top ten market with The Intern coming in at #9 ahead of France, Italy and Brazil and within 1m of UK, Russia and Germany. HK slides in at #11 with The Martian out of nearly 60 territories so it is pulling its worth here. Are You Here and Black Mass were both rejected and Mr. Holmes held nicely.

Spectre opening day adm. % change from Skyfall's opening day adm.: -27.8%While that drop is somewhat concerning, two factors have to be acknowledged before analyzing that number. First is the surcharge that has been added on in 3 years time and the longer running time. For Spectre, it is more expensive for a ticket than Skyfall's and the extra 5 minutes on Spectre decreases the number of showtimes from 6 to 5 without falling into unfavorable times (like before 9 AM) and less people will be willing to watch a longer movie on a weekday. With regard to OWs, Spectre will no doubt blow past Skyfall's 1.9m OW and secure 2m. 2.5m is very much possible as well. It could even defeat Mission Impossible 5's OW if its weekend showings sell out. Our Times seemed to hold up OK. Scouts Guide looks like it had a good hold. Not a good opening for She Remembers, He Forgets. Bridge of Spies was held back by Spectre. In my opinion, it should have gotten rid of the word 'Spies' in the title. Bad for Are You Here. #7-#11 are separated by less than 50 admissions.

Re: HK: Spectre aims for new heights; Our Times cume over 4m
Thursday estimate
Spectre opening day - $410,857 +19.4% Skyfall's OD
This number guarantees a 2m opening and a OW above Skyfall's. It is tracking slightly behind MI5's OW and is on pace for 2.4-2.5m this weekend.

Spectre is trailing MI5 but it bridged the gap on Friday losing by 6,000 adm. from 9,000 on Thursday. Spectre will lose by quite a margin on Saturday and Sunday.

Fantastic for Spectre. It is the biggest opening day of the James Bond franchise. Our Times is doing quite well. She Remembers, He Forgets won in gross over Scouts Guide which had a 1,200 victory in admissions. Bridge of Spies will pass 1m this weekend.

Really good for Spectre. Our Times is slowing down a little. Solid for She Remembers. Including Saturday's admissions, Spectre is heading toward a 2.7m OW, beating MI5's OW and +42% above Skyfall's OW. _______________________________ In less than 2 weeks time, the final chapter of The Hunger Games hones in on HK with a twist. This time, HK will show the film in 3D which will most likely be a huge blessing for the series. It will take down the OW in the franchise for sure. That much is certain.

5 | Bridge of Spies | $81,000 | -73.6% | $1,029,000 |
Excellent start for Bond. We'll need actuals to see if it is victorious over MI5 but it is current up 42% from Skyfall's actual. Our Times had a solid hold despite mammoth competition. Word of mouth has carried it so far and it will surpass 5m next week. Not a bad weekend for She Remembers but nothing particularly memorable about it either. Great hold for Scouts Guide. Bridge of Spies was knocked down for obvious reasons. It did pass 1m this weekend though. Spectre outlook: 5m is a lock and 6m should happen even with average word of mouth here. If it can achieve Skyfall's multiplier, then it will bank 7.25m.

Ouch for Spectre. Strong opening for Return of the Cuckoo. It had half the showtimes of Spectre and was less than 1,500 away from its admissions. Decent for Our Times. Magnificent hold for She Remembers in spite of another local film opening this week. Scouts Guide held up alright. All new entries except for The Green Inferno did little damage. The Green Inferno did great with only 5 showtimes on Thursday. Bridge of Spies had a much better hold after last week's freefall.

Dismal, really?? It's only 2,020 admissions down. It's still doing very I'd say CONSIDERING its bad WOM, lesser reviews, and general lack of buzz for a Bond film. To call it dismal, it would have to be doing worse than Quantum of Solace. Do you have this data?

Wow. That Thursday actual must have been way off base. Weird because that actual came from Sony themselves. Either that or Spectre was really inflated on Thursday. Anyway, it beat its predecessor by almost $400,000 on OW. The rest of the top 5 were pretty close to estimates. Our Times is doing well still. 5m will happen by this weekend. Scouts Guide is inching along to 1m. It will happen by next week. This might be the most random hit of the year. Zombie films and even horror films in general do not do well here. Even quasi horror films don't do all that well. In all of Scouts international territories that are playing this now, HK is outpacing Russia (WTF?) and opened higher than Australia. Decent opening for She Remembers. Algren wrote: Dismal, really?? It's only 2,020 admissions down. Do you have this data? Yes. It had a much bigger opening weekend than Skyfall and yet it's down 2,020 admissions from Skyfall which had to face Cold War on its 2nd weekend. Skyfall wasn't all that well received either but still managed to pull off a drop below 60% with more competition. Return of the Cuckoo will be lucky to even get half of Cold War's OW and Spectre might drop harder than Skyfall with less competition. Lack of buzz? Really? If Bond had zero buzz, it would not have made 2m OW or beaten its predecessors OW for that matter. Thursday estimates1. Spectre - $141,932 ( -67.9%/$2,967,670 2. Return of the Cuckoo - $116,126/$116,126 3. Our Times - $49,031 ( -33.3%)/$4,903,107 4. She Remembers, He Forgets - $41,289 ( -8.6%)/$516,116 5. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse - $864,495 Spectre is up 22% from Skyfall's 2nd Thursday actual and up less than $400,000 from Skyfall at this point in time. Its weekdays have been very poor and it managed to lose to Skyfall on Monday-Wednesday off of a stronger OW. Good opening for Return of the Cuckoo. Not bad for Our Times. It will break 5m by Saturday. She Remembers had an outstanding hold. Scouts Guide's road to 1m should occur by next week.

Average for Spectre. 100,000 admissions this weekend is not happening. Opening day effect occurred for Return of the Cuckoo. User rating sits at a 3.9/5. Ok for Our Times. Excellent for She Remembers. Good hold for Scouts Guide. Disaster strikes for Knock Knock. It is getting slammed by users with only a 1.9/5 rating. __________________________________________ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 has been doing some early pre-selling at a handful of theaters. Admissions are slow due to the change to 3D with this movie. It'll be interesting to see how audiences react to this development. The franchise has never been strong on OW with Catching Fire delivering the biggest OW in the franchise with 1.38m. Perhaps this could be the one to push past 1.5m.

Good to see III-rated (or NC-17) Scouts Guide besting Black Mass, The Last Witch Hunt, and Goosebumps. It deserves the "Halloween movie of the year" title.
People really crave Taiwanese nostalgic coming-of-age romance Our Times . It has a 50/50 shot at taking over The Martian total gross of $5.8m. Not surprising as the film was made with Hong Kong audience in mind with its many Hong Kong cultural references.
Two similarly nostalgic local films Return of the Cuckoo and She Remembers, He Forgets also do well. Return of the Cuckoo is the film sequel to the highest rated tv drama in year 2000. The tv series was a sobbing love story set in Macau between a girl and her adopted brother (who is deaf). Reviews for the film so far have been poor. She Remembers, He Forgets is the sophomore effort by the director of 2013 surprise hit The Way We Dance. It is about the reunion of three schoolmates at an elite high school. The story of their youth is told in parallel with their reunion twenty years later. Lots of 90's nostalgia in play here.
