And that did an adjusted 173 million in 5 days in May. Nowhere close to the current OW record

Without IMAX, without 3D, without five extra hours that'll get rolled into opening day, in less than 3,000 theaters, and in a far less frontloaded era.

Imax will add 3-4 million onto the weekend gross

3-D will add 25 million, so that's 28-29 million extra.

173 million 5-day would probably translate to 130-135 million 3 day normal. Adjust that down 15% due to the December release date backloading for 110-115 2-d OW. Add the 3-d and you get 135-140 OW.

Theater count didn't affect TPM's opening. There were just more sell outs. Still plenty of open seats.

May 1999 is still going to be more front loaded than December 2015. It's December a totally different beast.

Plus, less people overall go to the movies now with the rise of home media/internet/piracy/digital download. Plus, going to the movies was way cheaper.

So an opening in the 130-150 range is totally precedented.

TPM opened in fewer theatres than was the norm even back then. It was to do with Lucas, types of screens and the revenue share with theatres (heavily skewed against the theatres). You really cant compare the two directly.

I wonder why The Hunger Games was the highest selling first day seller instead of Catching Fire.

My original 350-400 is obviously no longer realistic. The film will be halfway to that after the first 3-4 days.

This is the film Abrams was born to direct. I think it will make Star Wars cool again.

I doubted a film could open this HUGE in December, but I shall doubt no longer. The anticipation and the hype are palpable. I mean even the traffic my website receives for all Star Wars-related articles right now - in particular the articles about the presale record - is huge.

Opening day - $95 million
Opening weekend - $217 million
Total gross - $725 million

Never.

Getting too caught up in media hype. Walk ups will be weak.

My favorite thing about Excel's walk-ups argument is that it's based on STAR WARS only being important to people over the age of 30, yet it's the younger generation that is more likely to buy their tickets online.

The film will be huge, but if Fifty Shades of Grey's legs can be affected by its Valentine's day (never would gave ibcreased Sat otherwise), SW will be deflated OW in December.

I should point out that I absolutely think December will deflate the opening, but STAR WARS is popular enough to still make, say, $170m or so.

That doesn't matter, TDS. The 40 and under crowd makes up the vast majority of film goers. Just because that age group is leading on-line ticket sales does not mean whatsoever that the walk ups will be there.

They won't.

It doesn't need the OW record anyway. If we were talking about a summer opener - no doubt it would be opening over $220m but in December it will rake in a shitload of $$$ for weeks. Especially if its actually good/great.

$175m or so is more than enough.

Maybe we need a SW doubles BvS domestic gross thread to really spice up KJ. ;)

I forgot what my last prediction was, but I can definitely say with confidence that this isn't going below $150M OW and honestly I'm starting to think it could even challenge $200M, but I don't want to let the HYPE go to my head. This really does feel HUGE though, much more so than JW or AOU and we all know how those two turned out.
