Stockholm (AFP) - Bestselling Swedish crime writer Henning Mankel, whose most famous creation was the detective Kurt Wallander, died overnight at the age of 67, his publisher said Monday.

Mankell had been been suffering from cancer for several years and "passed away peacefully" in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, publishing house Leopard said on its website.

Mankell's collection of Wallander crime novels set in southern Sweden brought the author international fame after it was made into a television series by Britains's BBC starring Kenneth Branagh.

A novelist and playwright who lived in both Sweden and Mozambique, Mankell published more than 20 novels and a dozen children's books.

Wallander was a good series. Both the Branagh one and the Swedish one.
