Indeed. ¥1.04 billion. I recall tracking ending for it when it exceeded ¥900 million, and was pleasantly surprised when it was revealed to have gotten to the ¥1 billion milestone.

Thanks for the notice.

I believe it's the only previous Aniplex film that's ever achieved the ¥1 billion milestone, but I can't help thinking that there's an obvious omission and within the past few years...

Hey Corpse,
I was wondering if you knew what this data actually means, or could check on Bunkatsushin?
http://www.bunkatsushin.com/images/news/107222/1_b.jpg

It's related to this article:
http://www.bunkatsushin.com/news/article.aspx?id=107222

I see 33,509 attendees and 48,699,500 yen gross for Love Live Movie, but for what time frame does it cover? I also see it has been out for 103 days as of Sep 23rd.

Or maybe it's not covering what I think it's covering, because "心が叫びたがってるんだ。" says 2,786 attendees and 3,808,000 yen grossed, but the Bunkatsushin article says 50K attendees and 300 million yen fro 5 days:

Weekend Forecast (09/26-27)

01 (01) ¥167,000,000 ($1.4 million), -49%, ¥990,000,000 ($8.3 million), Attack on Titan - Part 2: End of the World (Toho) Week 2
02 (02) ¥152,000,000 ($1.3 million), -42%, ¥1,000,000,000 ($8.4 million), No Longer Heroine (Warner Bros.) Week 2
03 (04) ¥116,000,000 ($960,000), -35%, ¥1,740,000,000 ($14.5 million), Unfair: The End (Toho) Week 4
04 (03) ¥108,000,000 ($895,000), -46%, ¥700,000,000 ($5.8 million), Ant-Man (Disney) Week 2
05 (05) ¥87,000,000 ($720,000), -38%, ¥425,000,000 ($3.5 million), The Anthem of the Heart (Aniplex) Week 2
06 (06) ¥75,000,000 ($620,000), -38%, ¥790,000,000 ($6.6 million), Pixels (Sony) Week 3
07 (09) ¥73,000,000 ($605,000), -33%, ¥8,800,000,000 ($72.0 million), Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 8
08 (07) ¥70,000,000 ($580,000), -36%, ¥770,000,000 ($6.4 million), Bee of the Sky (Shochiku) Week 3
09 (08) ¥67,000,000 ($555,000), -37%, ¥2,300,000,000 ($18.9 million), Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 5
10 (10) ¥51,000,000 ($602,000), -30%, ¥550,000,000 ($4.6 million), Kingsman: The Secret Service (Kadokawa) Week 3

I'm anticipating No Longer Heroine will knock off Attack on Titan - Part 2 over the weekend in admissions (only 13,000 separated them last weekend), but I don't know if it'll manage to do it in revenue due to the significant avg. ticket price differences between the two film (Titan's avg. ticket price was nearly 20% higher last weekend).

Expect most films to experience hefty weekend drops, after coming off an extended holiday weekend period that last through Wednesday this year. And since this is a post-holiday weekend, no notable films are being released, and I don't think any of the openers are going to crack the Top 10.

The Kingsman is looking at a solid weekend if pre-sales are any indication, so ~¥50 million is probably the minimum required to make the Top 10, and I don't think any of the openers are going to manage that.

The Gonin Saga film is the only wide release, but it's barely so, playing on 124 screens, and its pre-sales were very weak. I don't think it'll make the Top 10.

All the other openers are limited, however, one of them might have a fair chance of debuting in the Top 10, and that's Aria the Avvenire.

It's only playing on 11 screens, so it's at a huge disadvantage there, but it's doing very well on those screens and could sell 50%+ of its available admissions. It's also likely to have a very high avg. ticket price, as these anime films typically do, so it wouldn't need the necessary admissions to make the Top 10 in revenue. We'll see. It's probably going to debut just outside the Top 10, though, in 11/12th, which would still be very impressive.

That's how much all the films that have played this past summer at the Cinecitta theater located in the heavily populated Kanagawa prefecture (9 million strong) have grossed, and how many tickets they have sold, since their initial release.

Cinecitta is one of the busiest theaters in Japan, definitely among the top 5, and is often tracked on a monthly-to-monthly (yearly-to-yearly) basis. The only comparable theaters are those in Shinjuku. I believe Cinecitta is only a couple minutes, by foot, from the Kawasaki Station, too, which sees nearly 200,000 passengers daily.

This theater is also very strong for anime films, especially the more niche, fanbase or otaku driven releases, as it often holds stage greetings, fan events, etc.. I'm pretty sure Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo broke the weekend admissions record at Cinecitta in 2012 (check pages 122/123 of this thread).

>No Longer Heroine easily overtook Attack on Titan - Part 2 and will win the weekend in terms of admissions, and even with a much lower avg. ticket price, the difference in admissions appears significant enough to claim the #1 spot in revenue over the weekend, too.

>Aria the Avvenire sold 59% of its available Saturday admissions, and if can do the same on Sunday, there's still the chance it crack the Top 10. An unlikely chance, especially with Kingsman (the likely #10 film) pulling off an incredible hold this weekend, but it's not impossible since ticket prices are probably crazy high.

>Jurassic World is holding very strong, and is improving upon the likelihood of outgrossing Big Hero 6 to become the highest-grossing film of the year.

Overall, the Saturday-to-Saturday drops are pretty good. Much better than I was expecting for many films. Last Sunday was a Movix Cinemas discount ticket day, so the Sunday-to-Sunday drops will likely be a bit larger than normal, but the weekend drops should come in reasonably strong for the post-holiday frame weekend.

>Big victory for No Longer Heroine, easily rising to the #1 spot after finishing second place last weekend. And given how well it performed over the extended holiday weekend last week, that lasted through to Wednesday, a possible sub-20% hold in its second weekend is very strong. It's setting itself up nicely to challenge American Sniper as Warner Bros.'s biggest film this year.

>Attack on Titan - Part 2 experiences its expected big second second weekend drop, though considering the solid holds from the other openers last weekend, a drop over 50% looks even worse.

>Aria the Avvenire's Sunday couldn't keep pace with its Saturday performance, so it won't be making a surprise entry in the Top 10.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

01 (02) ¥211,000,000 ($1.75 million), -20%, ¥1,050,000,000 ($8.4 million), No Longer Heroine (Warner Bros.) Week 2
02 (01) ¥147,000,000 ($1.22 million), -54%, ¥975,000,000 ($8.1 million), Attack on Titan - Part 2: End of the World (Toho) Week 2
03 (03) ¥126,000,000 ($1.04 million), -37%, ¥720,000,000 ($6.0 million), Ant-Man (Disney) Week 2
04 (04) ¥113,000,000 ($940,000), -37%, ¥1,740,000,000 ($14.5 million), Unfair: The End (Toho) Week 4
05 (05) ¥100,000,000 ($830,000), -29%, ¥440,000,000 ($3.6 million), The Anthem of the Heart (Aniplex) Week 2
06 (09) ¥76,000,000 ($630,000), -30%, ¥8,800,000,000 ($72.0 million), Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 8
07 (06) ¥68,000,000 ($565,000), -44%, ¥785,000,000 ($6.6 million), Pixels (Sony) Week 3
08 (08) ¥65,000,000 ($540,000), -39%, ¥2,300,000,000 ($18.9 million), Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 5
09 (07) ¥63,000,000 ($525,000), -42%, ¥765,000,000 ($6.4 million), Bee of the Sky (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (10) ¥57,000,000 ($470,000), -21%, ¥560,000,000 ($4.7 million), Kingsman: The Secret Service (Kadokawa) Week 3

>No Longer Heroine delivered a strong second weekend, following it's impressive debut and holiday weekend frame last week. Its chances of exceeding the ¥2 billion milestone are looking good, and it could make a run at American Sniper to become Warner Bros.'s biggest film of the year.

If that happens, 2015 will be the fourth-consecutive year that a local film released by Warner Bros. was their biggest film in the market: Rurouni Kenshin (2012) > Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion (2013) > Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014) > No Longer Heroine? (2015). They're doing very well since putting more of their efforts in the release of local productions in the country after Harry Potter concluded.

>Attack on Titan - Part 2, there's nothing good to be said here. There's a very real possibility that it'll miss the ¥2 billion milestone, and gross 40%+ less than its predecessor. Its under-performance, unfortunately, hurts the Fall box office season, though thankfully most of the other Fall releases are meeting or exceeding expectations so far.

>Ant-Man is performing well, and should outgross all non-Avengers/Iron Man MCU films, though it can still outgross the first Iron Man.

>Kingsman wasn't able to capture the magic that made it a big hit in South Korea and other Asian markets, but it's having a nice little run in Japan anyway.

Everything increased over weekend estimates.

>No Longer Heroine pulls off an even more impressive hold, rising to first place, selling 196,496 tickets in its second weekend of release.

Now, even if it only manages normal weekly holds, it should exceed the ¥2 billion milestone, and is in an excellent position to outgross American Sniper to become Warner Bros.'s biggest film of the year. And as I mentioned above, if that happens, this will be the fourth-consecutive year that a local film distributed via Warner Bros. has been their top film of the year.

>Attack on Titan - Part 2, while improving on estimates, still experiences the deadly 50% second weekend drop, selling only 112,487 tickets over the weekend.

On the bright side, and it's quite dim, it did narrowly exceed the ¥1 billion milestone over the weekend. That'll keep it's chances of exceeding ¥2 billion slightly better, but it's not looking too good. Combined, the two Attack on Titan films are looking to earn barely ¥5 billion, a number that everyone involved were certainly hoping one of the titles could have grossed.

>Ant-Man cements itself as a future ¥1 billion earner, a milestone that most superhero films don't reach or struggle to reach. Marvel's tiny hero delivered one of the strongest second weekend holds in their MCU, selling an additional 96,575 tickets in its second weekend of release.

It's actually doing surprisingly well, and as apart of the MCU, should finish behind only the two Avengers films, and the Iron Man sequels. Pretty impressive feat.

>Jurassic World enters the Top 50 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time, at #47, after its eighth weekend in release.

The history was already made with Harry Potter, but yeah, it's still very good. I hope a sixth will also do as well.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Mission: Impossible Makes History
Most likely. There may be a delay in weekend actuals during New Year, but until then, everything should be back to normal.

Last week was just unusual because of 'Silver Week'. This year, three consecutive holidays (technically two, but a single day between holidays is considered a holiday) fell on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, which messed with the box office reports.

Silver Week won't occur again until 2,026.

Bakuman, the live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime series, will easily claim the #1 spot over the weekend, and should do so with a solid debut.

Fathers and Daughters is the only other wide release, though just barely, and it'll be competing with two limited release anime titles, The Empires of Corpses (the first film in a three part project based on Project Itoh's novels) and the second Arpeggio of Blue Steel film, for bottom half positions in the Top 10.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted tomorrow evening.

>Bakuman is on track for an easy weekend victory, and should see a debut high enough to guarantee it becoming another ¥1 billion earner this year. If it can open a bit closer to ¥300 million, or actually reach the mark over the weekend, perhaps it'll be a future ¥2 billion earner.

>Jurassic World is receiving 4DX showings this weekend, and as a result, its pre-sales are up significantly compared to last Saturday. And it they're any indication of the upcoming weekend frame, it'll likely see a weekend increase. I might be conservative with my increase, so don't be surprised if it earns over ¥100 million. Also, it's a lock to surpass Big Hero 6, in gross, as the biggest film of the year now.

The bottom half of the Top 10, positions 8-10 in particular, will be interesting to watch over the weekend as there are 8 films that could fill those positions. There's a ¥40-60 million range that most, if not all of them, are likely to land in.

>Arpeggio of Blue Steel is the one I feel most confident about opening in the Top 10. The first one earned about ¥40 million in its debut on half-as-many screens, so I really doubt the second film does less than that figure based on that fact alone. Also, its pre-sales are quite strong.

>Fathers and Daughters has mediocre pre-sales, though that's not surprising considering its target audience. It should have fair walk-up business, so I'm predicting it'll manage a Top 10 debut.

>The Empire of Corpses is doing fine at the usual locations, but 75% of its overall theater count is accounted for at them, so it won't come in much higher. It's a Top 10 candidate, though I see it missing with a 11/12th place debut.

>Then there are several holdovers that are also in contention, including Ted 2, Kingsman, and Bee of the Sky. And even Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation could resurface in the Top 10 with the addition of 4DX showings boosting its pre-sales.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (10/03-04)
With the final Evangelion movie being delayed to who knows when, are we looking at 2 months and a half of a rather weak box office (until SW7 and Yôkai Watch hit) ? No potential big opener before ?

Has it been officially pushed back? I know it's already October, but if I remember correctly, Evangelion 3.0 didn't get its release date announced until only 2/3 months before it was released. If there hasn't been any official word, there's still a little time for an announcement for Evangelion 4.0.

As for the other films, October and November are generally weak months of the year, especially October. There are rarely any big films scheduled for these months, though late October/early November sees the occasional blockbuster scheduled.

I believe Galaxy Turnpike (10/24) is the only other big release until December that has potential to open above ¥500 million. It's directed and written by Koki Mitani, and his films have been quite successful (¥3 billion+ hits).

>Bakuman is performing as expected, and should be on track for a weekend of ¥250 million+ if Sunday is steady.

>Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ars Nova Cadenza did very well on its first day, and should definitely make the Top 10 despite its limited theater count of 60 (67% accounted for above).

>Jurassic World didn't see an increase with the addition of 4DX showings, at least in admissions, but it still had a very strong hold.

>Mad Max: Fury Road returns to theaters this weekend thanks to 4DX showings and performed alright. Its estimated total that's been posted every week will eventually see an uptick.

Busy weekend, no estimates or anything, so I'll get right to the weekend actuals and 2015 charts.
