>Pixels appears to have pulled off the small victory over the weekend, but a debut around ¥200 million is mediocre. This is, I believe, Adam Sandler's biggest opening by a huge margin (and definitely his first #1 debut) since his films always bomb or don't get theatrical releases (common for imported comedies), but this opening is all due to the Pac-Man and his gaming comrades, obviously.

This is Sony's second #1 debut this year, and second highest opener, following Shinjuku Swan.

>Bee of the Sky looks likes it had a fair opening, one that Shochiku is most likely satisfied with having. It'll be tough to reach the ¥1 billion milestone with this opening, but it at least has a chance. Love Live! The School Idol Movie is their only release so far this year to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone.

>Kingsman opened quite well, and gives Kadokawa their second film to debut above ¥100 million this year (after The Maze Runner from earlier this year).

>San Andreas, well, was dumped by Warner Bros.. But a debut well below ¥100 million is still pretty bad, even with the small-scale release.

>Pixels comes out on top in a right race, scoring Sony their second #1 film so far this year, but fails to rack up much of a high score.

The Adam Sandler, or rather Pac-Man, lead release sold 139,339 admissions across 620 screens over the weekend. This is Sandler's biggest debut by a considerable amount, and his first film to debut atop the box office in Japan. It's worth noting, however, that no one's even mentioning his name, and are giving the #1 debut credit to Chris Columbus.

>Unfair: The End debuted in third place last weekend, but ranked first place in admissions. And it nearly repeated its #1 rank in admissions, selling 136,093 (3,246 shy of first place) in its second weekend.

>Jurassic World holds steady with another week in the Top 3, pulling ahead of Ted 2 in a very close weekend race between the two. The fourth dino adventure will soon enter the Top 50 highest grossing films of all-time (now #53).

>Bee of the Sky only nabs itself a fifth place debut, though earned enough over the weekend to be considered a solid start.

From director Yukihiko Tsutsumi, the helicopter drama sold 125,917 admissions on 312 screens over the weekend. It'll be an uphill battle, but it might be able to reach the ¥1 billion milestone, which would give Shochiku another much needed ¥1 billion earner this year.

>Kingsman: The Secret Service landed itself a solid debut over the weekend, even though it missed the Top 5 and won't repeat the success it achieved in other Asian markets. Released by Kadokawa, the film sold 83,562 admissions on 217 screens over the weekend. It's not that impressive, however it's quite decent for this type of film, and for a film released by Kadokawa.

>And finally, San Andreas rounds out the Top 10 debuts, coming in eighth place over the weekend with 46,468 admissions across 217 screens.

Who'd have thought a Naruto movie would pass Pokémon one day.

Is Pokémon still the lowest grossing one so far?

Nah. It's on track for ¥9.1-¥9.3 billion, which would give it 6.1-6.3 million admissions.

Yeah, it's certainly not going to beat the fifth movie's ¥2.67 billion total. It's going to finish sub-¥2.5 billion.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Grossing Animated Films Update
So next year's Doraemon movie is a remake. Apparently the original remains the most attended Doraemon movie from the regular franchise to this day with 4.2 million tickets sold. I didn't know tickets were so cheap compared to today all the way up to the late 80s.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Highest Grossing Animated Films Update
Ticket prices began to spike in the mid-70s, then leveled off in the 80s to remain consistent throughout the entire decade, before finally seeing a small increase in the mid-90s where the yearly avg. ticket price has remained firm ever since, really, for 22 years now.

There's been very small yearly avg. ticket price increases since 2010, due to the introduction of 3D and the tax increase of 2014, but with 3D having largely died out and additional discount days being introduced, the avg. ticket price has hardly increased since the mid-90s (~1/2%).

There are positives and negatives of this (mostly negative). The box office can't exactly grow, and continues to be stagnant, but you can compare the box office data, from the yearly results, to film comparisons from the past 20+ years in both gross and admissions without any need to adjust for inflation/deflation.

6,028 (-27%) [17/30], Aikatsu! Music Awards (Week 5)

It's a long holiday weekend this week with Monday being Respect of the Elderly Day, and this is likely to be the strongest weekend for the remainder of the year until December.

Toho's Attack on Titan - Part 2: End of the World leads a nice group of new openers.

Disney is releasing Ant-Man; Warner Bros. is opening No Longer Heroine; and Aniplex is giving The Anthem of the Heart a very wide release by their standards.

>That's really worrisome for Attack on Titan - Part 2. If it doesn't have an incredible Sunday* performance, it's looking to open to half that of its predecessor... There were predictions suggesting that the poor reviews/WOM of the first film could hurt the second film, and that definitely appears to be the case.

These films certainly didn't produce the results Toho and its filmmakers expected in Japan, and would probably be losing a lot of money, but thankfully for them, they're being released in over 90 markets overseas due to the manga's/anime's popularity.

>Nice for No Longer Heroine. If it was playing at more locations, I'd give it a decent chance of winning the weekend in terms of admissions. All the Shojo (teenage romance) manga live-action adaptations over the past year have been performing quite well, and this one might give Warner Bros. their biggest release this year (they've had a bad 2015).

>Ant-Man is doing as expected, maybe slightly better than, and should have a similar opening as the most recent non-Avengers/Iron Man Marvel films.

>The Anthem of the Heart looks to be doing alright, but I was expecting something a little better given how wide Aniplex decided to take the film, by their standards. The number seems fine, but Aniplex has gotten these admissions, and better ones, for other films playing at far fewer locations.

>The Summer (July/August) holdovers still can't catch a break with another weekend of solid performers keeping their weekends drops fairly high.

>And it's worth mentioning that incredible hold for Unfair: The End. Its past set of weekdays were also very, very strong, so WOM is certainly spreading for it, which is interesting considering it's the third film in the series.

*Sunday is a Movix Cinemas' Discount Day (20th of every month), and with Monday being a holiday, Sunday's evening business should be stronger than normal, too, so expect Sunday to outpace Saturday by more than usual.

Attack on Titan - Part 2 is quite the disappointment, while No Longer Heroine performed very well and possibly won the weekend. It's a matter of different theater counts and avg. ticket prices. The former probably won the weekend frame, but the latter should have managed the 3-day weekend victory.

Ant-Man also fared fairly well, and should have opened higher than the most recent Marvel films, excluding the Avengers and Iron Man films.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates, including the 3-day holiday weekend, a little later.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Keiro no Hi WKND)
After checking some comparable films, No Longer Heroine's avg. ticket price is likely to be too low to open on top, but it's close in admissions, and probably sold more tickets over the 3-day weekend. If Warner Bros. had taken it slightly wider, it probably would have pulled off the weekend upset. Mark this down as yet another successful Shojo (teen romance) live-action adaptation for the year. The genre has been very popular as of late.

Attack on Titan - Part 2 appears to have experienced nearly a 50% drop-off from its predecessor's opening weekend, and even taking the 3-day weekend into consideration, its 3-day opening is 25%+ below its predecessor's 2-day opening... The poor reception of the first film sure spread fast, it's the only explanation for this severe decline.

Ant-Man's debut is in-line with Captain America 2 and Thor 2, and possibly just above them. It's marketed as more of a kid-friendly film than other Marvel titles, so I'm predicting it likely sold more tickets over the weekend than other non-Avengers/Iron Man Marvel films.

Monday's holiday will delay weekend actuals until tomorrow, but if they're released for some reason, I'll post the results tonight.

Oh whoops, of course it is! Since weekend actuals might come out this evening, I'll wait until then to update it. They could be delayed another day, however, since I forgot Tuesday was another holiday (Autum Equinox Day).

It should come in slightly above Pixels for the weekend frame, for 5th place, and just under it over the 3/4-day weekend, for 5th place.

Both films have received poor receptions.

Weekend numbers have finally been released, but they're scattered between the weekend frame (Sat-Sun) numbers and the long extended holiday weekend frame (Sat-Wed) numbers.

So I'm just going to post a write-up of the weekend, including the extended holiday weekend, in a little bit. Then, I'll update the 2015 charts afterwards which will included the updated totals/admissions as of Wednesday, Sept. 23rd rather than the usual Sunday update.

09 (03) Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 7
10 (06) Kingsman: The Secret Service (Week 2)

I haven't posted the weekend results in this format in awhile, but the long, expended holiday frame leaves too many weekend frame (Sat-Sun) numbers absent this week.

Note: Extended five-day holiday weekend results also posted below:

>Attack on Titan - Part 2: End of the World takes the weekend crown, but not without a considerable drop-off from its predecessor's debut.

The second-half of the big budget, live-action adaptation of the major hit manga/anime series earned ¥327,915,700 ($2.75 million) with 237,016 admissions over the weekend frame on 427 screens, down a significant 46% compared to the opening weekend of the first film.

And the extended holiday weekend didn't really redeem it either, since it grossed ¥752,553,400 ($6.3 million) with 562,040 admissions after its first five days in release. That places its five-day, holiday weekend, debut only 25% higher than its predecessor's normal two-day opening weekend...

The first film had poor legs, even with the support of Summer and Obon Festival, so this film is likely to sink in the coming weeks. It's hard to imagine, but I don't think even a total of ¥2 billion is certain right now.

>No Longer Heroine may have settled for second place, but it's the real winner of the weekend. The teen romance adaptations have been quite successful over the past year, and this one's no different.

Warner Bros.'s live-action adaptation of the Shojo (teen romance) manga earned an impressive ¥262,520,230 ($2.20 million) with 224,083 admissions across 268 screens over the weekend frame. However, even more impressive, is that its five-day holiday weekend debut outpaced that of Attack on Titan - Part 2.

The film grossed an incredible ¥760,740,130 ($6.4 million) with 671,636 admissions over the extended holiday frame. There's a good chance of it exceeding the ¥2 billion milestone, and it could possibly outgross American Sniper, making it Warner Bros. biggest film of the year.

>Ant-Man comes in third place, but managed a successful debut in its own right, too.

Marvel's smallest superhero gathered ¥200,396,500 ($1.68 million) with 143,236 admissions over the weekend frame on 634 screens. Having opened above ¥200 million makes it the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel film, excluding The Avengers and Iron Man films, and only slightly lower than last year's Guardians of the Galaxy, too.

And it remained strong over the extended holiday weekend, too, by grossing ¥539,954,600 ($4.5 million) with 396,790 admissions over its five-day debut. Any doubts that this one would miss the ¥1 billion milestone like many superhero films do are gone (though it won't gross much higher), and it should outgross all of Marvel's other films, excluding, again, The Avengers and Iron Man films (though it might beat the first Iron Man).

>And rounding out the weekend debuts, coming in fifth place, was The Anthem of the Heart.

Despite playing on just 142 screens, Aniplex's latest released earned a solid ¥140,562,450 ($1.18 million) with 99,082 admissions over the weekend frame. And while a bit frontloaded over the extended holiday frame, it still managed to gross over ¥300 million ($2.6 million) and 235,000 admissions in its five-day debut.

I don't recall the last Aniplex film to have achieved the ¥1 billion milestone, if any. Often times their films are playing far too limited, but this one should get as close as any to the mark.

Since this is already quite length, I'll pass on any holdover write-ups, so look for their updated totals/admissions in the 2015 charts coming up.
