Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (09/05-06)
I don't know if it's "well-known", but I'm sure the property is at least somewhat known. There's a museum in Japan named 'The Little Prince', but it's dedicated to the author and his collective work rather than the actual novel itself.
It'll probably do fairly well, for a France production. It's rare for imported animated films to post really impressive numbers, though, so I wouldn't expect a gross much higher than ¥1 billion right now. ¥1 billion will likely be the goal set by Warner Bros.. The Japanese are fascinated by most things dealing with flight. It's a successful, reoccurring theme in every medium in the market, including very strong box-office results.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (09/05-06)
Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions (43% of Market)
50,159 (--), Unfair: The End (NEW) 45,605 (-37%), Ted 2 (Week 2) 36,951 (-39%), Jurassic World (Week 5) 23,958 (-40%), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Week 5) 22,677 (+29%), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Week 2) 15,543 (-55%), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Week 2) 12,345 (-54%), Minions (Week 6) 8,027 (-36%), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Week 5) 7,587 (-40%), SMTOWN The Stage (Week 2) 6,781 (--), Piece of Cake (NEW) 6,304 (-58%), The Boy and the Beast (Week 9) 5,924 (-49%), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Week 6)
Interesting race at the top this weekend. I thought it'd be a two film battle between Unfair and Jurassic World, but the former didn't come in quite as high as I was expecting, while the latter fell a bit harder than I was expecting, too. This gives Ted 2 some potential to claim the #1 spot.
Whatever happens on Sunday, I highly doubt the same film will top the weekend in gross and admissions.
And the holdovers are experiencing the typical post-Summer drops, though they appear higher than average. Most of them should recover some after Sunday. A 50%+ drop for any of them would be pretty surprising.
Yowamushi Pedal the Movie is having a great second weekend. 79% of its theater count is accounted for so its overall admissions won't be much higher than its number at the usual locations, but it's performing well enough to likely crack the Top 10 for the weekend. That means either Attack on Titan - Part 1 or Inside Out (15th for Saturday, but it'll thrive on Sunday) will fall out of the Top 10.

Algren wrote: How did Denzel's Flight do in Japan? Pretty well, all things considered. It managed a #1 debut with ¥156.3 million and 129,920 admissions. It wasn't able to reach the ¥1 billion milestone (so an actual total isn't known unless otherwise reported), but it looks like it was able to hit ¥900 million (about $9.5/9.6 million). BOM's $9.2 million total looks a bit low. BOM didn't update it after 5 weeks, after it fell out of the Top 10. It didn't suddenly earn nothing after that point.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (09/05-06)
Usual Locations - Weekend Admissions (43% of Market)
98,940 (-33%), Ted 2 (Week 2) 94,095 (--), Unfair: The End (NEW) 82,839 (-36%), Jurassic World (Week 5) 50,552 (-38%), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Week 5) 34,723 (-48%), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Week 2) 34,602 (-47%), Minions (Week 6) 33,788 (+10%), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Week 2) 18,944 (-33%), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Week 5) 15,355 (-28%), SMTOWN The Stage (Week 2) 15,126 (-54%), The Boy and the Beast (Week 9) 14,033 (--), Piece of Cake (NEW) 13,952 (-46%), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Week 6) 11,558 (-53%), Inside Out (Week 8) 10,840 (--), St. Vincent (NEW) 9,341 (-58%), Hero 2 (Week 8)
Ted 2 pulled ahead on Sunday and wins another weekend at the usual locations in terms of admissions. That doesn't mean it actually won the weekend in admissions or gross, however, since the Top 3 are all quite close.
>Ted 2 sold nearly 50% of its weekend admissions last week at the usual locations, which is pretty high. That means it's not doing too well, in comparison, to the other chains outside of the usual locations.
>Unfair: The End is close enough in admissions above that it could win the overall weekend if it only played slightly better than Ted 2 outside of the usual locations, which seems very possible.
>And while Jurassic World will probably fall shy of both of them in admissions, it'll have a much higher avg. ticket price that it could still win the weekend, too. Like what happened between it and Ted 2 last week.
I'll post the Weekend Estimates in a bit.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (09/05-06)
Weekend Estimates (09/05-06)
01 (01) ¥301,000,000 ($2.5 million), -36%, ¥7,730,000,000 ($62.9 million), Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 5 02 (02) ¥291,000,000 ($2.4 million), -34%, ¥1,250,000,000 ($10.4 million), Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 2 03 (--) ¥280,000,000 ($2.3 million), 0, ¥280,000,000 ($2.3 million), Unfair: The End (Toho) NEW 04 (03) ¥163,000,000 ($1.4 million), -37%, ¥4,420,000,000 ($36.2 million), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Paramount) Week 5 05 (04) ¥117,000,000 ($980,000), -46%, ¥4,750,000,000 ($39.0 million), Minions (Toho-Towa) Week 6 06 (05) ¥108,000,000 ($905,000), -47%, ¥480,000,000 ($4.0 million), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Toho) Week 2 07 (07) ¥63,000,000 ($530,000), -33%, ¥2,345,000,000 ($19.2 million), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 5 08 (12) ¥55,000,000 ($460,000), +11%, ¥225,000,000 ($1.9 million), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 2 09 (08) ¥51,000,000 ($430,000), -45%, ¥3,010,000,000 ($24.4 million), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Week 6 10 (06) ¥50,000,000 ($420,000), -55%, ¥5,525,000,000 ($44.9 million), The Boy and the Beast (Toho) Week 9
So I'm going with Jurassic World claiming its fifth-consecutive week on top. I'm pretty sure it'll only ranked third over the weekend in admissions (180,000-185,000), but that should be enough to edge out another weekend victory in terms of gross due to the high avg. ticket price.
Ted 2 or Unfair: The End should come out on top over the weekend in admissions (200,000-210,000), and still have a chance to knock off Jurassic World for the weekend in gross if their admissions improve slightly with actuals.
In the end, it's hard to accurately determine which film will place #1 for the weekend. It could be any of the three.
Yowamushi Pedal the Movie missed the Top 10 in its debut weekend last week, but its second weekend increase looks to have gotten it into the Top 10 this week. This means that Inside Out very likely falls out of the Top 10, though.

It's also interesting to note that distributor Toho, along with its subsidiary company Toho-Towa and video division, has 9/10 films in the Top 10 this week.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (09/05-06)
Weekend Actuals (09/05-06) (C) Universal Pictures01 (02) ¥306,209,300 ($2.57 million), -31%, ¥1,307,022,200 ($10.7 million), Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 2 02 (01) ¥298,747,400 ($2.51 million), -35%, ¥7,793,501,000 ($63.4 million), Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 5 03 (--) ¥294,564,500 ($2.48 million), 0, ¥294,564,500 ($2.48 million), Unfair: The End (Toho) DEBUT 04 (03) ¥160,794,300 ($1.35 million), -38%, ¥4,468,271,400 ($36.6 million), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Paramount) Week 5 05 (04) ¥119,134,700 ($1.01 million), -45%, ¥4,779,862,300 ($39.2 million), Minions (Toho-Towa) Week 6 06 (05) ¥108,494,900 ($911,000), -47%, ¥517,907,800 ($4.3 million), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Toho) Week 2 07 (12) ¥77,363,700 ($650,000), +57%, ¥250,147,900 ($2.1 million), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Toho Video Division) Week 2 08 (07) ¥63,245,800 ($531,000), -33%, ¥2,366,988,500 ($19.4 million), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 5 09 (06) ¥53,051,300 ($446,000), -52%, ¥5,539,270,200 ($45.1 million), The Boy and the Beast (Toho) Week 9 10 (--) ¥52,799,000 ($443,000), 0, ¥52,799,000 ($443,000), Piece of Cake (Toei) DEBUT 11 (08) ¥51,229,700 ($431,000), -45%, ¥3,016,778,600 ($24.5 million), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Week 6
What a battle at the top of the charts this weekend. Ted 2 manages to rise to the #1 spot in gross, however, Unfair: The End while ranking #3 in gross, actually placed #1 in terms of admissions.
>Ted 2 was denied a #1 debut last week, but pulled ahead of Jurassic World in its second weekend and fended off Unfair: The End to claim first place. The surprise hit sequel sold 211,365 admissions in its second weekend, bringing its 10-day total up to 957,125 admissions.
The solid second weekend is an indication that any negative WOM the film may have certainly isn't affecting its box-office performance so far, and there's a good chance it'll exceed the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone if it keeps up the pace. I highly doubt it'll have the incredible longevity of its predecessor to match/surpass its ¥4.24 billion total, though.
>Jurassic World's reign atop the box-office comes to a close in its fifth weekend, but it continues to post great numbers post the summer box-office season and is still in the running to possibly beat Big Hero 6 to become the highest-grossing film of 2015.
As of its 33rd day in release, the fourth dino outing exceeded 5.2 million admissions, making it the most-attended live-action Hollywood release since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.
>Unfair: The End, the third and final film adaptation in the Unfair TV drama series, may have only debuted in third place in terms of gross, but with 214,198 tickets sold across 328 screens over the weekend, it actually debuted in first place in terms of admissions.
The debut is pretty decent, however, it is 6% lower than its predecessor from 2011. The original film, Unfair: The Movie grossed ¥2.72 billion, and the second film, Unfair: The Answer grossed ¥2.34 billion. The franchise has had decent legs in the past, but a gross just over ¥2 billion is probably as high as the final film will achieve.
>Minions has drastically slowed down now that summer has ended, but its performance continues to be quite remarkable. As I've mentioned (weeks ago), it became the highest-grossing imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film by a considerable margin, and it'll soon reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone.
>Piece of Cake rounds out the Top 10 with its debut, selling 36,982 tickets across 158 screens over the weekend. The opening figure itself is poor/mediocre, but considering it's a Toei live-action film playing on under 200 screens, a debut above ¥50 million is okay.
>Attack on Titan - Part 1 finally crossed the ¥3 billion milestone in its sixth week in release, but it got there at a much slower pace than it probably should have. Since it's reached the ¥3 billion mark, it's considered a nice success, but it's at least 25% less than most expectations.

Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Sat. Seating/Showtimes
Hi Corpse, ANN did a little report on Yôkai Watch recently : http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interes ... ver/.92487. Any similar signs regarding pre-sales for the upcoming movie ? Or do you think they are pushing it (after all Pokemon's first movie remains its highest grossing and it hasn't stopped the franchise) ?

Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Sat. Seating/Showtimes
Well, it's incredibly likely that the series peaked last year. Its merchandise/toy sales were insane last year, so the sales reports being 1/5 or less this year doesn't greatly concern me. They couldn't remain at last year's level.
There are signs that it's still very popular:
>The spin-off battle game released this past July will soon surpass 1.5 million copies (could eventually reach 2 million), which is incredibly strong for a non-main series title. >The anime ratings have remained consistent (4-6%) each week.
I haven't come across any pre-sales reports for the second movie later this year, but they're likely to be down compared to last year. The franchise reached such a high peak last year, that it's nearly impossible to go higher. Over 90% of Japan's nursery/elementary children/students reportedly saw the film in theaters. And you can't exactly improve on that staggering figure.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forcast (09/12-13)
Weekend Forecast (09/12-13) 01 (--) ¥220,000,000 ($1.8 million), 0, ¥220,000,000 ($1.8 million), Pixels (Sony) NEW 02 (02) ¥208,000,000 ($1.7 million), -31%, ¥8,250,000,000 ($67.3 million), Jurassic World (Toho-Towa) Week 6 03 (01) ¥205,000,000 ($1.7 million), -33%, ¥1,730,000,000 ($14.2 million), Ted 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 3 04 (03) ¥173,000,000 ($1.4 million), -41%, ¥690,000,000 ($5.8 million), Unfair: The End (Toho) Week 2 05 (--) ¥150,000,000 ($1.2 million), 0, ¥150,000,000 ($1.2 million), Bee of the Sky (Shochiku) NEW 06 (--) ¥130,000,000 ($1.1 million), 0, ¥175,000,000 ($1.4 million), Kingsman: The Secret Service (Kadokawa) NEW 07 (04) ¥103,000,000 ($855,000), -36%, ¥4,690,000,000 ($38.5 million), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Paramount) Week 6 08 (--) ¥70,000,000 ($580,000), 0, ¥70,000,000 ($580,000), San Andreas (Warner Bros.) NEW 09 (05) ¥68,000,000 ($565,000), -42%, ¥4,890,000,000 ($40.2 million), Minions (Toho-Towa) Week 7 10 (06) ¥66,000,000 ($550,000), -39%, ¥660,000,000 ($5.5 million), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Toho) Week 3
It's probably going to be yet another close battle at the top of the charts this weekend.
>Pixels should debut in first place. It has the pre-sales, seating, and showtime advantage, but it's looking fairly weak and may only open slightly above ¥200 million, which is the figure that both Jurassic World and Ted 2 are likely to earn over the weekend, too.
>Shochiku has given Bee of the Sky quite the wide release by their standards, though it doesn't appear to be in contention for a #1 debut. I won't write-it-off entirely, as it could skew older meaning its Sunday will outpace its Saturday, but it'll be lucky to hit the Top 3, in my opinion.
>Kingsman: The Secret Service finally lands in Japan, and it actually looks to be doing fairly well, especially for a Kadokawa release on 217 screens. It opened yesterday (Friday) to a decent ¥40/45 million (~$350,000), so a weekend opening above ¥100 million is likely. Its Saturday pre-sales are also more than double those of San Andreas's.
>And speaking of San Andreas, it's very likely to bomb. Warner Bros. isn't going very wide with it (217 locations), and pre-sales are poor.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (09/12-13)
Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions (43% of Market)
09/12 34,783 (--), Pixels (NEW) 27,995 (--), Bee of the Sky (NEW) 26,920 (-41%), Ted 2 (Week 3) 24,272 (--), Kingsman: The Secret Service (NEW) 24,049 (-52%), Unfair: The End (Week 2) 21,514 (-42%), Jurassic World (Week 6) 13,356 (-44%), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Week 6) 12,265 (-46%), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Week 3) 11,067 (--), San Andreas (NEW) 7,852 (-49%), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Week 3) 6,640 (--), 2015 AD Live Project (NEW) 5,895 (-52%), Minions (Week 7)
Another pretty rough Saturday for holdovers. Sunday should be much kinder, and assist the weekend in having mostly sub-40% drops, though.
>Pixels comes out on top for the day, as expected, and while it should go on to win the weekend, it's going to a small victory being on track for a debut around just ¥200 million or slightly higher.
Assuming that Pixels does come out on top for the weekend, the films ranked 2-5 are all going to be very close.
>Bee of the Sky had a decent first day. It might be able to break ¥150 million over the weekend.
>Nice for Kingsman, however, 54% of its overall theater count is accounted for above (versus the usual 40-45%), so it's likely that Unfair: The End and Jurassic World beat it for the day.
>San Andreas is a disappointment, or even a bomb, though the former is more fitting given the small-scale release.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (09/12-13)
Usual Locations - Weekend Admissions (43% of Market)
09/12-13 68,615 (--), Pixels (NEW) 57,887 (-41%), Ted 2 (Week 3) 55,953 (-40%), Unfair: The End (Week 2) 55,750 (--), Bee of the Sky (NEW) 46,624 (--), Kingsman: The Secret Service (NEW) 46,367 (-44%), Jurassic World (Week 6) 26,606 (-47%), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Week 6) 20,983 (--), San Andreas (NEW) 18,417 (-45%), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (Week 3) 16,805 (-52%), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (Week 3) 16,236 (-53%), Minions (Week 7) 11,811 (-23%), SMTOWN The Stage (Week 3)
Pixels should have won the weekend by a comfortable margin; Bee of the Sky may have opened slightly above expectations; Kingsman surprises; San Andreas disappoints.
The holdovers didn't really recover much on Sunday, and seem to still be experiencing the post-Summer decline. This early September is also a bit more crowded than usual, so the holdovers are having to deal with harsher seating/showtime cuts, too.
Weekend Estimates will be up shortly.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a new weekly update or list you'd like to see included in the weekly updates, like how I do the #1 films of the year, best multipliers, etc.? Actually I do have a suggestion... Can you mark the movies with an * (or something similiar) in your yearly lists, which actually opened in December the year before? I know the Japanese box office year goes from December to November, but the rest of the world goes by January to December... For comparison's sake it would make things a little bit easier - at least for me...

Yep. I've been meaning to add release dates to the Top Opening Weekends/Top Grossing Films lists for awhile now, so I'll do it pretty soon.
