August 20 Weekend Actuals

1. Pixels - $816,000
2. Hitman: Agent 47 - $646,000
3. Inside Out - $587,000/$7,440,000
4. Wild City - $344,000
5. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - $6,610,000
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - $577,000
To the Fore - $1,090,000

These numbers are slightly inflated. Expect numbers to come down when official numbers are released tomorrow.

Very good start for Pixels. Hitman also did quite well. Inside Out was hit harder than usual this weekend but it is still on track to pass 8m. Poor for Wild City. Good total for MI5.

Thursday schedules

The openers aren't very big this week with most getting 3 showings a day. Holdovers reign supreme and Pixels dominates the showing count. Hitman/Inside Out will be slightly downgraded.

I still don't really understand the UA hate for Inside Out. Even Minions is getting the 7 PM showing over IO at one theater.

This will be a very competitive weekend.

Two local genre pics open this weekend as the school summer holiday draws to a close. Horror Knock Knock Who's There? and comedy Undercover Duet are both vying for a top 5 finish. The cop comedy has the edge as it receives more ad push and theater count.

There is another interesting race. Two WWII-themed movies are going semi-wide Thursday. South Korean actioner Assassination is about Korean and Japanese killers on a mission to annihilate each other in China. The Emperor In August is a history drama from Japan that chronicles the political deliberation in Japan the days before the Empire of the Sun surrenders in WWII. It will be interesting to see which film is better received by Hong Kong audience.

Hero 2015, based on a very popular Japanese TV drama, is going wide too and could claim a top 3 spot. Period drama The Assassin from acclaimed Taiwanese director Hsiao-hsien Hou (A City of Sadness) also enters the race. The only Hollywood offering is She's Funny That Way. It and Hollywood Adventures, an action comedy from China, will probably compete for the flop-of-the-week title.

Hero is not getting into the top 3. At best it lands at #5 behind Undercover Duet and last week's top 3.

#5 will be up for grabs this week with Assassination, Knock Knock Who's There?, Hero 2015 and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation all in the mix.

I'd be surprised if Assassination debuts ahead of Hero 2015. The South Korean WWII spy thriller is just not in the same league with the movie version of the Japanese legal drama, both in terms of popularity and reception at the test screenings. 木村拓哉 and 松隆子 are still stars to people born in the 1980's and 1990's. The TV drama itself was popular in HK too. Last week's previews had great turnout. Reviews so far have been excellent. Hero 2015 could land in the top 3, making over US$300,000 for the weekend. On the other hand, I could see Assassination struggling outside the top 6 with less than US$200,000. Wanna bet?

Knock Knock Who's There could be an under performer in this crowded frame. It seems to me the filmmakers try to revive the once perennial Hong Kong-style horror movie series Troublesome Night 陰陽路. But Knock Knock is a horror anthology with four individual segments. It might not be the cup of tea for people who want a feature-length story with fully developed plots. And the film's marketing does not stand out in the packed marketplace. It could finish outside the top 5.

I wonder how The Emperor in August will compare to The Eternal Zero.

Well, if that number is adding previews into the mix then sure it could hit top 3 but without it, I don't think it will get there. Hero reminds me of Attack on Titan. Popular source material turned into feature film where many rush out on opening day to see it. Hero won't be as affected by reviews as Attack on Titan was but the base of people watching it will be limited. In contrast, Assassination stars Gianna Jun, fresh off her turn in My Love From Another Star, and the film itself has been praised. Period dramas may turn off viewers but I think Jun has starpower and goodwill from the MLFAS TV show. Assassination is also in more theaters than Hero.

Very good for Pixels. It is aiming for an increase this weekend in admissions but the switch to 2D by most theaters could affect its gross by a bit. Inside Out seems to be affected by Pixels which has seen its week-to-week drops grow larger beginning from 29% last Thursday to 40% yesterday. Inside Out has already passed 7.5m and will pass Jurassic Park: The Lost World today to join the top 20 highest grossing foreign films of all time. By the end of this weekend, it should pass The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to be #14 of all time. Weak start for the new openers. Hero, however, is doing the best in pre-sales so far with strong 7 PM shows. Good hold for Hitman although its Thursday hold in final admissions will be much larger.

It looks like I was right about Assassination. It will only appeal to hardcore fans of the "Korean wave" and older people who use the film as a channel to vent their anger towards the Japanese invasion of China (as well as Korea) in WWII.

Some comparison between Attack on Titan and Hero 2015. The manga and the anime of Titan are hits among HK youth today. The TV series is on free-to-air TV channel. It was supposed to be the surefire blockbuster but they botched the release by offering previews so early when the reviews were bad. And it was widely reported by the media that they cut 35 seconds of footage of the film to get a teens-friendly PG-13 rating. News traveled fast and people were silently boycotting the film.

Hero 2015 is a reminder of the glory days of Japanese TV dramas (the 90's and early 00's). It plays into the nostalgia of many people born in the 80's. It appeals to an older demo.

Do most Japanese TV drama film adaptations chart well in Hong Kong, or is success limited to the bigger, older properties like Hero, Bayside Shakdown, and Aibou?

Was the first Hero film successful in Hong Kong?

The first Hero made $563,626 in 2007, ranking 56th on the yearly chart. Not bad for a non-English foreign language film. Not most Japanese TV drama film adaptations chart well. But Japanese films that do well in Hong Kong often have stars coming from popular drama series. Some recognized Japanese stars in my generation are: Sorimachi Takashi (GTO), Takuya Kimura (Hero), Matsu Takako (Confessions).

I remember 同一屋簷下 (Under One Roof) was an extremely popular drama in HK. If a movie version was made, it would probably do great numbers. 半澤直樹 (Hanzawa Naoki) is a recent hit that would do well in HK if translated into a movie.

And it looks like I was right about Hero and the rest of this week's placements. Opening day rush factor and limited appeal beyond fanbase will be the reasons it won't hit the top 3. Assassination is a longer film so I didn't expect it to surpass Hero on opening day but it's possible that it could still overtake Hero this weekend depending how Hero does this weekend and its higher ticket prices.

Shocking to see Pixels fail to increase in admissions after its pre-sales increase this morning. Undercover Duet had strong walk-ins to seal 2nd place. Walk-ins totaled almost 80% of its final admissions today. Hitman fell quite hard from last week. Good hold for Inside Out. Knock Knock Who's There? also did really well with walk-ins, accounting for 82% of its final admissions today. Apart from 7 PM showtimes, Hero 2015 was nowhere near a hero with the other showtimes. Ok for Mission Impossible 5. Disaster for Wild City. Poor for Assassination. Very good for The Assassin.

Very surprised that Pixels increased in gross despite theaters switching to 2D this week. Perhaps the remaining theaters that showed it in 3D saw more admissions today than last Thursday. Other than that, Mission Impossible 5 topped Hero for #6.

The last Bayside Shakedown movie was a flop in HK and only made $32,984 total. The last Japanese film adaptation from any source material that I recall doing well were the Nodame Cantabile movies back in 2010. Those grossed $500,000-$600,000 and were successful hits.

The actuals are already in? It's only 1am in HK. Usually the numbers are published around noon the next day.

Significant drop-off for Hero 2015 from Hero 2007. But it's a date night movie. Let's see what happens on Friday night.

Actually there are nine openers this week. The other openers:

16. The Emperor in August (or The Longest Day in Japan) (Japan)
# tickets sold: 416
# showings: 15
# tickets sold per showing: 28

18. Attack on Titan the Movie: Jiyu No Tsubasa (Japan)
# tickets sold: 230
# showings: 4
# tickets sold per showing: 58

20. She's Funny That Way
# tickets sold: 173
# showings: 12
# tickets sold per showing: 14

21. Hollywood Adventures (China)
# tickets sold: 199
# showings: 20
# tickets sold per showing: 10

Is the Titan anime movie in any connection to the live action movie of Titan? Why are they scheduled so close to each other?

I think Knock Knock Who's There did relatively well tonight because it's the Ghost Festival (the fourteenth day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar). Legend has it the ghosts come out to earth from hell on this day. People burn hell money and other paper items to please them.

The Knock Knock marketing has devised a creative way to celebrate the Ghost Festival in a subway train. :funny:

Today it's also HK's political leader C.Y. Leung's birthday. People on the streets are having fun with the CEO's "mug shots". :hahaha:

No. It's the second anime compilation film. In Japan, two anime compilation films were released prior to the release of the first live-action film.

It looks like it was released after the first live-action film in Hong Kong, though, which is weird.

Very good for Pixels. Good hold for Inside Out. That hold for Hitman in pre-sales will turn out to be a mediocre-troubling hold today. Decent increases for Undercover Duet/Knock Knock. Hero is definitely not playing well beyond its fanbase. This will go down to at least #7 today in admissions.

Yeah, it's weird. Maybe they are handled by different distributors.

Attack On Titan: End of the World, the second part of the live-action Titan movie, will be released Sept. 19 (Saturday). A movie premiere will be held Sept. 15. The first movie has grossed a disappointing HK$9.5m (US$1.2m) so far. Bad press and bad reviews have contributed to its being frontloaded. Will Part 2 save some face for the series?

Excellent hold for Pixels. Very good for Inside Out. Hitman rebounded with walk-ins today. It seems moviegoers are willing to watch the holdovers as every holdover in the top 10 did better than Thursday's week-to-week drops by at least 5%. Not bad for Undercover Duet. Knock Knock Who's There? fel due to opening day rush factor + poor reviews. Good for Mission Impossible 5. Expected for Hero. Still a poor hold for Wild City. Bad for Assassination. The longer runtime should have seen its admissions soar today. Nice hold for To the Fore.

Was the first Hero film successful in Hong Kong?
The last Bayside Shakedown movie was a flop in HK and only made $32,984 total. The last Japanese film adaptation from any source material that I recall doing well were the Nodame Cantabile movies back in 2010. Those grossed $500,000-$600,000 and were successful hits.

Midnight Diner had a leggy run earlier this year. Did that qualify as a TV drama film adaptation?

Pixels increased despite having the 2nd worst increase of the top 10 on Saturday. Excellent hold nonetheless. Very good for Inside Out. Not bad for Hitman. Nice increase for Undercover Duet. Hero 2015 had the worst increase of the top 10 but was hindered due to limited showings. Good hold and fantastic increase for Mission Impossible 5. Good rebound for Knock Knock after yesterday's drop but negative press has already started to seep into its weekend gross.

Excellent hold for Pixels but I question if it will have the same soaring walk-ins as last Sunday. Very good for Inside Out. Solid for Hero. Nice for Undercover Duet. Ok holds for Hitman/Mission Impossible 5.

Weekend ProjectionsAugust 27

6Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation$174,000-44.8%$6,638,000
Let's talk about Pixels for a minute. By next weekend, it will have passed 3m and while there will be a huge slowdown in ticket sales after next weekend, if it has the stamina, HK could actually take down France as one of Pixel's top 10 markets. Meanwhile, in a far away universe, Inside Out has clawed and legged its way to 8m. Whether it happens on Day 39 or 40 is irrelevant, what will be key in determining how much it grosses its remaining days here is the holiday on Thursday. If it does really well, I could see theaters be somewhat forgiving and giving it an extra week with a few showtimes. 9m is very much alive and while 10m is looking unlikely, Monsters U and Minions better look out.

Hitman: Agent 47 might be a flop stateside but in HK it is very much the opposite. This action film should be able to make 2m before leaving theaters.

Undercover Duet failed to ignite local viewers to see it. Not a good start. Reviews are not bad but another local film will make headlines next week.

Knock Knock Who's There? looks like it will manage to squeak out a victory over MI5 for #5 but ranking aside, that is a very low opening.

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation is doing its damnedest to get to 7m and while it had an OK hold this weekend, the onslaught of new films on Thursday might kill any chance it has of 7m. There is the possibility that MCL will keep it over say most of the other holdovers (- Pixels/Inside Out) which could be the ticket for 7m.

I don't get it. Hero 2015 more than doubled its Friday admission number. It went from 2,870 from Friday to 6,182 Saturday. How did it manage only a +34.9% QD % increase? The movie appeals to an older demo given its huge Saturday increase and does not seem frontloaded.
