Eiren, the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan's website. But film totals prior to 2000 were "distributor income", not totals. Most blockbusters from the 80's/90's had their actual totals revealed over time, as well as those that belong to a franchise or brand, and even actual totals for critically acclaimed films have been reported, too.

Most other films (for example, 88's Willow or 95's Mask) don't have a known actual total outside of their distributor income, though. However, for those films, you can come up with an educated guesstimate as the distributor income usually accounted for 55-65% of the film's overall total.

I've calculated pretty much every film going back to 1980, so was there any particular film you were wanting a total for?

10 (10) ¥71,835,400 ($588,000), -29%, ¥742,966,150 ($6.2 million), Kamen Rider Drive The Movie: Surprise Drive (Toei) Week 3

>Jurassic World claims its third-consecutive week atop the box office, and delivered an impressive sub-40% hold coming out of Obon Festival, too.

In its third weekend, the latest Jurassic Park installment sold 378,941 tickets bringing its overall admissions over 4 million after 19 days in release. Its three week total also surpassed Cinderella, allowing it to become the highest-grossing live-action film of the year. By the end of its run, Jurassic World is likely to exceed ¥8 billion ($65-70 million) and 5.5 million admissions.

>Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation continues its strong performance in second place, selling 264,338 tickets in its third weekend.

And after 17 days in release, it's exceeded 2.6 million admissions, and is tracking 21% ahead of Ghost Protocol at the same point-in-time. Its predecessor will gain on it as it received its major holiday boost later in its run, but Rogue Nation is looking very likely to exceed that ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, keeping the Mission: Impossible franchise's perfect record of blockbuster hits.

>The Boy and the Beast exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone itself over the weekend, and in doing so, became the first domestic animated feature not based on an existing brand or franchise to ever accomplish the achievement. After 44 days in release, its admissions total is just shy of 4 million (3.99 million).

>Boruto: Naruto the Movie exceeded 1.5 million admissions after 17 days in release, and is only ¥50 million away from becoming the highest-grossing film in the Naruto film franchise. It'll either become the #1 film in the Naruto film franchise on Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Very impressive performance.

>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages has been outside the Top 10 now for two weeks, but in weekend admissions, it actually rose back into the Top 10 (10th). This is mainly worth mentioning because it exceeded 2 million admissions over the weekend, after 37 days in release. 2 million admissions used to be nothing for the Pokemon franchise, though, so this is a very small victory for this year's film...

04 (02) ¥238,000,000 ($2.0 million), -34%, ¥3,950,000,000 ($32.2 million), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Paramount) Week 4
05 (03) ¥168,000,000 ($1.4 million), -29%, ¥4,420,000,000 ($36.1 million), Minions (Toho-Towa) Week 5
06 (04) ¥104,000,000 ($855,000), -23%, ¥5,360,000,000 ($43.5 million), The Boy and the Beast (Toho) Week 8
07 (05) ¥86,000,000 ($705,000), -36%, ¥2,825,000,000 ($22.9 million), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Week 5
08 (06) ¥85,000,000 ($700,000), -34%, ¥2,175,000,000 ($17.7 million), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 4
09 (07) ¥76,000,000 ($625,000), -31%, ¥3,800,000,000 ($30.9 million), Inside Out (Disney) Week 7
10 (08) ¥70,000,000 ($575,000), -33%, ¥4,330,000,000 ($35.4 million), Hero 2 (Toho) Week 7

>Jurassic World should repeat at #1 for a fourth-consecutive week. Its weekdays have been quite good and following this weekend, its running total will be near the ¥7 billion milestone.

>Ted 2 should offer some competition for the top spot, but it's unlikely to claim the position. Its Friday performance (approx. a $1 million start), and Saturday pre-sales doesn't suggest an opening higher (or much higher) than what its predecessor debuted to.

The original film was a major breakout in Japan. Its debut was so-so (though it was very strong for an imported comedy), but it went on to manage several consecutive weeks remaining flat/slight increases, and remained atop the box office for four-consecutive weeks, too. It eventually earned over ¥4 billion, which made it the most-successful imported comedy since Home Alone 2.

>S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future, the film adaptation of the hit TV drama (avg. 14.2% rating), looks like it'll have a fair debut, and I believe it also has some stage greetings over the weekend. I haven't been up-to-date on all-things-box office this week, but if the stage greetings are wide-spread, perhaps it'll come in a little higher than my prediction.

>And finally, in limited release, Yowamushi Pedal the Movie could crack the Top 10. I'm doubting its chances, and expect a 11/12th debut but the ~¥70 million or so required for a Top 10 debut is certainly attainable.

Yep. It became the highest-grossing Naruto film on Tuesday. :)

Also, Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, the mini-series sequel to Naruto (chapters 701-710), is going to sell over 1 million copies, too (near 900,000 currently). All of the latter Naruto volumes averaged around 1.1 million, I believe, so the mini-series sequel is going to be on par with them.

It'll be interesting to see if the support for the Boruto film and mini-series influences Masashi Kishimoto to continue with another series in the same franchise in the future.

Well I'm hoping the movies continue to be made and keep following on the story and I also hope the Naruto Gaiden gets turned into an anime mini series.

Maybe it could turn into a full anime series which Kisimoto would overlook and give ideas and character designs to kinda like Toriyama is doing with Dragon Ball Super.

What do you think it's final gross will be?

¥2.4 billion+. September will probably keep it from reaching a ¥2.5 billion total. It may actually beat Pokemon, though.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (08/29-30)
Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions (43% of Market)

72,190 (--), Ted 2 (NEW
60,850 (-29%), Jurassic World (Week 4)
40,246 (-35%), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Week 4)
34,488 (--), S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future (NEW)
26,624 (-19%), Minions (Week 5)
17,550 (--), Yowamushi Pedal the Movie (NEW)
15,063 (-22%), The Boy and the Beast (Week 8)
12,589 (--), SMTOWN - The Stage (NEW)
12,478 (-34%), Boruto: Naruto the Movie (Week 4)
11,712 (-36%), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Week 5)
10,799 (-33%), Hero 2 (Week 7)
10,544 (-29%), Inside Out (Week 7)

-Pretty good for Ted 2 afterall. Its evening/night business was strong and if it has a decent Sunday, it might be able to reach ¥400 million over the weekend. ¥400 million+ is needed to achieve a #1 debut.

I still believe Jurassic World will win the weekend with an equal or stronger Sunday than Ted 2, though, due to its higher avg. ticket price. It may fall to second place over the weekend in admissions, however.

-S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future looks to be performing about as expected, if not slightly worse since its evening/night business was underwhelming.

-Minions appears to be benefiting from the final weekend before school starts back.

-Yowamushi Pedal the Movie performed quite well, but 79% of its overall theater count is accounted for above, so everything ranked below it (except for SMTOWN) still likely beat it on Saturday.

Quite the busy weekend, so I wasn't able to post any updates or weekend estimates.

However, I'll have the Weekend Actuals and 2015 charts posted pretty soon!

Pretty nice weekend, especially for the films targeting families/teens as this is the last weekend of Summer Vacation, and will likely be one of the best weekends for a few months as the Fall box office season is about to begin. Although, there are enough notable releases coming up this Fall that should keep the box office somewhat interesting until winter.

>Jurassic World fends off Ted 2 to claim its fourth-consecutive week atop the box office, although it did slip to second place in terms of weekend admissions.

The dinosaurs and company sold 300,794 tickets in its fourth weekend, and surpassed 4.75 million admissions after 26 days in release. It also became the first Hollywood live-action film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 to reach the ¥7 billion milestone.

Its legs have been quite strong post-Obon Festival, which most Obon openers generally can't achieve, so it's likely heading at a total of ¥9 billion (~$75 million) or so, which could allow it to dethrone Big Hero 6 (¥9.16 billion) to become the #1 film of 2015.

>Ted 2 wasn't able to take the #1 position over the weekend in terms of gross, though it did manage to win the weekend in terms of admissions.

The sequel to the 2013 breakout hit sold an impressive 307,960 tickets across 623 screens over its weekend frame - a 35% increase over its predecessor's debut. That brought its 3-day admissions to 406,225.

It's very doubtful it'll come anywhere near the crazy legs that its predecessor had, but a debut of this caliber could net it a total of ¥3 billion (~$25 million). Ted has become the most-successful imported comedy franchise/series since Home Alone in Japan, and needless to say, it's by far the biggest R-rated comedy series.

>Two big milestones were achieved by Minions and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation over the weekend with the former exceeding ¥4.5 billion, and the latter reaching ¥4 billion (and exceeding 3 million admissions, too).

Minions has gone on to have one of the most bizarre, and successful, box office runs of the year (or years). The fact it's actually a lock to reach the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone now is pretty incredible, which will more than double the box office totals for ANY imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film.

>S: The Last Policeman - Recovery of Our Future got off to a mediocre start, only selling 160,143 tickets over the weekend on 317 screens.

Most domestic live-action films have been struggling in recent years, so it wasn't espected to post anything too impressive, but the number is pretty poor considering the TV drama had pretty good rating (avg. 14.2%). In the end, though, it'll be yet another ¥1 billion earner for Toho this year.

>And finally, outside of the Top 10, Yowamushi Pedal the Movie came in twelfth place in its debut weekend in limited release, playing across 80 screens.

The battle atop the box office is probably going to be close once again this weekend.

Jurassic World held off Ted 2's debut last weekend to claim its fourth-consecutive week at #1, and it has a fair chance of remaining on top for a fifth-consecutive week.

Unfair: The End, the third film in the TV drama series, however has some nice pre-sales and should be able to top the ¥300 million mark over the weekend. So, I'm leaning more toward it debuting at #1 than for another repeat from Jurassic World.

Other than Unfair, the only other opener that could make the Top 10 is Piece of Cake. It's only playing on 158 screens, though, and probably needs over ¥50 million to crack the Top 10 which is unlikely to happen.

A more likely film to make the Top 10 is Yowamushi Pedal the Movie, which debuted in twelfth place last weekend. Its pre-sales are significantly higher than last week for some reason (possibly a giveaway for attendees), though, but its limited release should still hinder it from rising into the Top 10, I believe, but don't be surprised if it would make it either.

Most of the holdovers are likely to suffer some bigger drops than normal, as the first weekend of September is generally poor for them (especially films targeting kids/teens).
