Re: HK 7/23: Ant-Man stands tall against Inside Out; MI5 Wed
i.hope wrote: Bluebomb wrote: i.hope wrote: Over 40% drop for a non-sequel kid film is not good by any means. No need to spin it. I am talking about Monster Hunt. The only one spinning Monster Hunt's numbers is you. Monster Hunt under threat from 2 very big Hollywood kids' films and loss of several theaters manages to put up a hold in the 40-50% range. That is a very respectable hold. And FYI, I only referred to Monster Hunt as good when I was talking about its Saturday admissions hold which fell 40.5%. Just because it is not falling hard as you want it to or getting toxic word of mouth in Hong Kong doesn't mean you should discredit its run. Its loss of 25% of the showtimes in the sophomore week was due to poor turnout. Even after the screen loss, its per showing performance was still not up to par. An average of 37 tickets sold per showing Thursday put it below Ant Man's 56 (week 2), Inside Out's 54 (week 1), and Minions' 48 (week 3). Its Yahoo Movies user rating is the worst of all wide releases. It has received 127 "up" votes and 134 "down" votes, compared to Ant Man's 184-171, Inside Out's 65-16, and Minions' 190-68. Hong Kong's box office is usually market-driven, not state-driven. And hard selling usually don't work there. I'm not debating its entire run, just the week-to-week hold. Yes, it did poorly in its 1st weekend so some theaters dropped it this weekend but the whole point I was trying to make is that even with the loss of theaters, another animation hitting screens, it only dropped 40.5% on Saturday. That is a good drop given all the factors going against it. Yahoo Movies...lol. Using Yahoo Movies as a barometer for word of mouth here is wrong and outdated. It became no longer usable when Japanese enthusiasts overtook the site. Judging from YM, Ant-Man should have mixed word of mouth; Minions should have positive word of mouth and Monster Hunt should have toxic word of mouth but that has not been the case therefore it is not useful as a site to gauge public reaction. Monday admissions

9 | Jurassic World | 386 | 378 | -2.1% |

Amazing for Inside Out. It increased from its opening day admissions and beat Ant-Man for #1. The rest of the top 5 all had standard drops.

Magnificent for Inside Out. It had the biggest increase of the top 10 today and is building a nice gap over Ant-Man. Not bad for Ant-Man. Terrible increase for Minions. Despite having almost 3x the admissions of Monster Hunt, it only increased a little over 1,000 admissions on Tuesday versus 850 for Monster.

Great for Inside Out. Ok for Ant-Man and Minions. Mission Impossible 5 sneaks gets off to a solid start. Theaters are running the film after 9:30 PM which makes pre-sales difficult to achieve since it's a weekday. I expect it to get to about 4,000 admissions today. A lot of places are half or more than half full already. Thursday schedulesBroadway/AMC

Since Mission Impossible 5 is distributed by Paramount and MCL is the distributor for Paramount (Intercontinental) in HK, it is no surprise that MI5 comes out on 3-4 screens. Good for Mission Impossible 5. It did get a couple of extra days of pre-selling though. Ant-Man leads Inside Out because of the 7 PM showtime but it has switched to 2D this week while Inside Out gets a mixture of 3D and 2D showtimes. While Ant-Man's is massively inflated by the 7 PM showtime, Inside Out is the only one of the 3 to not have an empty showtime. Not bad for Minions. Admissions at The ONE are good.

Re: HK 7/29 PRESALES: MI5 previews hot; Inside Out leads Ant
July 23 Weekend Actuals
1. Ant-Man - around $1,570,000 (-30.0%)/$4,772,310 2. Inside Out - $1,425,288/$1,767,338 3. Minions - around $800,000 (-57.4%)/$9,076,146 4. Monster Hunt - around $240,000 (-45.6%)/$914,785 5. Insidious: Chapter 3 - $152,794 6. Paris Holiday - $95,909/$100,860 7. Magic Mike - $86,287 8. Terminator: Genisys - $3,868,864 9. Jurassic World - $12,384,264 10. Ted 2 - $3,807,940
Excellent hold for Ant-Man. Deadline reports that Inside Out bows to the biggest OW Pixar release ever (although Incredibles made 1.52m OW according to BOM.) Minions had another iffy hold but it fell less than expected. Encouraging hold for Monster Hunt. Insidious 3 opens below the original but above the second installment. Paris Holiday and Magic Mike opened horribly.
July 30 Predictions
1. Mission Impossible 5 - $2,500,000 2. Inside Out - $1,100,000 (-23%) 3. Ant-Man - $738,000 (-53%) 4. Minions - $300,000 (-63%) 5. Monster Hunt - $110,000 (-54%)
Mission Impossible 5 will be HK's last 2m OW grosser of the summer. Pre-sales look good and reviews will bolster walk-ins quite a bit. In the face of big competition, Inside Out will ease off about 20-30% this weekend thanks to low admissions on Thursday/Friday. Pre-sales are looking very strong with some theaters already matching MI5's pre-sales on Friday despite only being out half a day. Ant-Man had a great hold last weekend but another action film being in the marketplace will slice its legs. Minions has not had good holds but it has not experienced a terrible hold yet. Mission Impossible 5 will take away screens and showtimes from it but no new direct competition should keep it from being hurt drastically. Monster Hunt had an OK hold last weekend but Mission Impossible 5/Inside Out should pose a threat to it on the weekend at Broadway/AMC theaters which should see it stumble more than 50%.

Wow, fantastic for Inside Out. It was the only film of the top 10 to increase from Monday's admissions on Wednesday. Great number for MI5 previews.

Good start for MI5. MI5 pre-sales vs. MI4 pre-sales: 15,863 vs. 10,343 ( +34.0%) MI5 pre-sales are up 34% from MI4's pre-sales when it went head to head against Sherlock Holmes 2 in December 2011. Excellent hold for Inside Out. I expect less than a 10% hold in admissions for today. Huge but expected drop for Ant-Man. It should do big things with walk-ins (possibly accounting for 3/4 of sales). Minions had a mediocre hold but walk-ins will take a hit from the MI5/IO combo. Average hold for Monster Hunt.

I expect MI5 to pass 60,000 admissions on both Saturday/Sunday giving it a landslide victory over the 4th installment. Very strong for Inside Out. Mediocre for the rest of the top 5. Rest of the holdovers outside the top 5 got caught up in the MI5 carnage. Horrible for What We Do in the Shadows.

Huge bump for Mission Impossible 5. Inside Out had the best increase of the top 10 on Saturday. Yikes for Ant-Man. It was jumping up over 75% last weekend but MI5 has taken away screens but more importantly attention from it. Another weak hold for Minions. Meh for Monster Hunt.

10 | Terminator: Genisys | 1,157 | 310 | -73.2% | -- |
Top 2 is doing great. Ant-Man legs are fading fast. Minions is holding on precariously but next week will be the beginning of the end. Attack on Titan had an insane increase due to more theaters holding previews on Sunday alone than both Saturday/Sunday.
| Weekend Projections | | | July 30 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation | $2,395,000 | | $2,465,000 |

3 | Ant-Man | $580,000 | -63.1% | $5,995,000 |
4 | Minions | $350,000 | -56.2% | $9,695,000 |
5 | Monster Hunt | $100,000 | -58.3% | $1,115,000 |
Very good opening for MI5. It will be the biggest launch in the series for Ethan Hunt and his crew. After a slightly muted opening, Inside Out came back fighting with an exceptional hold. It will pass 4m by Wednesday and will pass 5m in 2 weeks time. After a very good hold last weekend, Ant-Man has been dealt a crushing blow by MI5. Its legs are getting progressively worse as the weekend goes along. 3rd straight hold in the 50's for Minions. It will end with one of the worst multipliers ever for an animation release. The hunt for HK$10m looks perilous for Monster Hunt. Broadway/AMC will have to start cutting showtimes next week to make room for new openers therefore it will probably juts miss out on HK$10m.

Huge coup for Inside Out. It looks like it's headed for 15,000 admissions for the day. Meanwhile, that is a surprising loss for MI5 even with the favorable weekdays for IO. Walk-ins should be very fierce though and it could hit 26,000 today. Minions and Ant-Man swapped places but they will reverse by final admissions.

Harsh drop for MI5 even with summer weekdays. Wonderful hold for Inside Out. Best hold from Sunday of the top 5. Slightly better week-to-week holds for Ant-Man, Minions and Monster Hunt than Sunday's.

MI5 did not have a good hold from Thursday's admissions. Well done Inside Out. Ant-Man and Minions both did ordinary numbers. Perhaps Monster Hunt is slowing down just a bit.

Strong hold for Inside Out. The bigger gap between it and MI5 in pre-sales might have something to do with what I'm about to discuss below. Don't like that hold for MI5 at all. Pre-sales should have done better especially since it only had 10 PM shows last Wednesday. Walk-ins will be very good though. Terrible for Ant-Man. Despite holding better than half, Minions was the only one of the top 4 that decreased in pre-sales when compared with Monday's. Thursday schedulesBroadway/AMC

Fantastic Four is sharing the biggest screen with Mission Impossible 5 here. FF gets 1 screen at most theaters while MI5 also grabs 1 screen. Inside Out will retain most of its showtimes from Wednesday despite being moved to the 3rd biggest screen. Doraemon will get morning and afternoon showtimes while To The Fore gets 4-5 showtimes. Vacation will be given half day showtimes at select theaters. Pre-sales for Fantastic Four looks good. Mission Impossible is lagging slightly behind FF. Inside Out though is winning massively at most theaters with night shows. At one theater, Inside Out is ahead of FF by 4:1 and 7:1 of MI5. Ant-Man loses 55% of showtimes while Minions gets pummeled by 60%. Monster Hunt is reduced to 3-5 showtimes including a 7 PM showtime. UA

To The Fore is getting 1 or 2 screens here because it is co-produced by Emperor which owns UA. Fantastic Four also gets 1 screen while Mission Impossible goes down to 1 screen. Pre-sales here show FF out in front of MI5. Doraemon and Vacation lead off with 2-3 showtimes. Holdovers didn't fare so well. Inside Out gets crushed by 60% in showtimes which is really bizarre since it is doing quite well in pre-sales. It has even beaten FF in some places on Thursday. That might explain why its Wednesday pre-sales are higher than usual. Half will continue to play Ant-Man with 1 or 2 showtimes but Minions is given the biggest deathblow with less than 25% of theaters willing to give it another week. Those that do have left it with 1 showtime. Every other holdover is wiped out including Monster Hunt. MCL

MI5 is placed on 2 screens here including the biggest screen while FF gets 1 screen. To the Fore races onto 1 screen. Vacation gets half day showtimes while Doraemon gets half day-full day showtimes. Special release Love Life! School Idol movie gets full day showtimes at 3 theaters. This is doing gangbusters so far with nearly every showtime full or just about. Inside Out gets cut 40%. Ant-Man loses about 70% of showtimes while Minions is dumped by 60%. Monster Hunt is gone. GH FF is bestowed the biggest screen here while Inside Out is given the nod over MI5 for the 2nd biggest screen. To The Fore is given 5 showtimes while Doraemon gets 4 showtimes. Ant-Man gets cut in half. Half have whittled it down to just 1 showtime while it will be remain with full day showtimes at other locations. Minions is down about 60% in showtimes here.

1. Mission Impossible 5 - $2,604,530 (weekend actual) 2. Inside Out - $3,523,777 3. Ant-Man - $5,840,626 4. Minions - $9,691,291 5. Monster Hunt - $1,138,002 Insidious: Chapter 3 - $261,516 Attack on Titan - $43,642 (previews) Terminator: Genisys - $3,919,657 Magic Mike XXL - $134,019
MI5 was underestimated. IO and Ant-Man were both well over-estimated. ________________________________ Friday update: FF6/MI5 are both battling it out in admissions but IO has a huge lead at quite a few locations. One theater is reporting a 4:1 lead over FF and a near 7:1 advantage over MI5 with Friday night showings. UA is giving Inside Out a couple more showtimes on Friday.

The race is on for #1 this weekend. Ho hum for Fantastic Four. Exceptional hold for Inside Out despite the UA blow on Thursday. Mission Impossible 5 crumbled. I didn't expect it to dwindle so much in just 1 week. Even its weekday admissions were not that great. It will probably stay at #1. Solid start for Doraemon. Poor for To the Fore. Ant-Man, Minions died. Love Live should be ranked 5th with more than 2,000 admissions. 3 theaters showing it are not being tracked by the website. Disaster for Vacation. Bad for Monster Hunt.

Decent start for F4 but reviews haven't been kind so far. Walk-ins were excellent today but will they continue to be brisk during the weekend? Disappointing hold for MI5. If it had done better Monday-Wednesday, Thursday schedules would have been in its favor. Now that showings are about a quarter full or half full on weekday afternoons, this has allowed Inside Out to trickle back in. Outstanding hold for Inside Out despite losing about 1/3 in showtimes from last Thursday and the UA slashing. Inside Out will likely experience the opposite of what happened last weekend. This week, Thursday/Friday should hold slightly weaker while Saturday/Sunday will hold exceptionally strong, perhaps even increase. Good start for Doraemon. Theaters are increasing this on the weekend. Poor for To The Fore despite getting rave reviews from the general public. Terrible holds for Ant-Man and Minions. Minions is still on track to pass 10m but had it had any one of Monsters University's negative factors on opening weekend (EDKO release, no holiday sneaks, direct competition on opening weekend and beyond, theater politics/reluctance), it would not have passed 10m. Ghastly for Vacation. Bleh for Monster Hunt. Love Live! should be ranked 6th or 7th.
| Friday adm. | (so far) | | | August 7 |

9 | Vacation | -- | 437 | -- | +5.3% |
10 | Monster Hunt | 564 | 228 | -59.6% | +42.5% |
Missing: Love Live! The School Idol MovieWay better hold for MI5. Big increase for IO due to upgrades from UA and a handful of theaters giving this more showtimes on Friday. Weak increase for Fantastic Four. Superhero movies should be aiming for a 40-50% increase in pre-sales on Friday. Big drop for Doraemon due to rush factor on Thursday. Not good for To the Fore. This will get downgraded on Saturday/Sunday. Holdovers all had bad holds while Vacation is an absolute mess.

Fantastic Four/MI5 gets the biggest screens at most places, however, Inside Out's performance has wormed its way into theater operator's minds and some have put this on the biggest screen. GH seems to be most receptive toward Inside Out's early admission selling prowess with a couple of them scheduling Inside Out on the biggest screen for the whole day. Saturday pre-sales at Palace APM

Disappointing pre-sales for Fantastic Four. It did not even sell 10% of the seats. WOM might be playing a huge effect already. Even more surprising is that both 11 AM shows have less seats sold than the 9 AM showing. Just ok for Mission Impossible 5. Good night shows. Incredible for Inside Out. The 11 AM showtime is more than half full after being out for 1 morning. This theater is one of a few Inside Out's strongholds. UA will definitely be kicking themselves for not scheduling it with full day showtimes.

I love it how Japanese films come out and actually do well in Hong Kong.

Doraemon is doing standard numbers. It has a niche audience so there's always a big rush on Thursday which in turn affects the weekend schedules. This year's Doraemon offering is getting almost the same number of admissions as the 2013 Doraemon release.

I believe that the reported Thursday numbers for Ant-Man and Love Live! are both wrong. According to other sources, the top 10 looked like this in gross. 1. Fantastic Four 2. Mission Impossible 5 3. Inside Out 4. To the Fore 5. Doraemon 6. Ant-Man 7. Love Live! 8. Minions 9. Vacation 10. Monster Hunt Take those 2 numbers with a grain of salt. Nice start for Fantastic Four but Mission Impossible 5 is winning this weekend. Considering the competition and sequel opening day rush factor, that is a decent hold for MI5. Great for Inside Out. Could this sneak into #2 for the weekend? Poor for To the Fore. Ok start for Doraemon. Ant-Man had a rough hold. Strong for Love Live! Minions drifted away. Abysmal for Vacation.

MI5 jumps ahead of FF and makes up the 6,000 adm. deficit from yesterday. Awful for Fantastic Four. Excellent for Inside Out. Better for To the Fore. Ok for Doraemon.

Incredible for Inside Out. Despite the UA scheduling, it is still ahead of MI5 and FF. This might be #2 for the weekend depending on FF's performance this weekend. MI5 is slowing its fall in pre-sales with each passing day. Very good. Disastrous for Fantastic Four. Solid for Doraemon. Very good increase for To the Fore. Bad for Ant-Man. Opposite to what MI5 has been doing, Minions has seen its pre-sales week-to-week drop grow bigger as this weekend progresses. Now that's what I'm talking about with respect to Love Live!'s admissions. Vacation is not having the time of its life so far. A final look at pre-sales at Palace APM on Saturday

Both MI5 and FF did not even beat IO's admissions from just 1 morning. MI5 is looking very strong at night while IO is destroying everything in the morning and in the afternoon.

5 | Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes | $230,000 | | $230,000 |
Not a good hold for MI5. The marketplace was too saturated with action films and F4/IO took away some of the attention from MI5. With pretty good reviews, it should have held better but it fell apart from Monday-Wednesday and then theater owners were confused when F4 won on opening day. As for F4, it was kind of hilarious and sad to see theaters scheduling this on the biggest theater on the weekend when its Friday pre-sales were saying otherwise. F4 performed at expectations. Theaters were ready to put this on 2 screens if need be but it faltered after only one day. Inside Out had another powerful hold. Sunday will be its best day as theaters are adding more showtimes and some are transferring the 2D showings from Saturday into 3D on Sunday. It will pass a 3 multiplier and 5m by the end of this weekend with plenty of life still left but up next is another action film, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. To the Fore opened softly on Thursday but poured it on on Friday/Saturday to extend its lead over Doraemon this weekend. The opening was below expectations so I do not expect much mercy even if it does well on Monday. Doraemon had pretty much identical opening weekend numbers compared with the past July/August summer Doraemon releases.

Re: HK 8/6 EST: MI4 says no to F4 and wins 2nd weekend; IO s
Saw a lot of this for IO today.
| Sunday | | | | August 9 |

1 | Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation | 69,364 | 33,431 | -51.8% | -9.9% |

10 | Monster Hunt | 4,330 | 2,175 | -49.8% | +40.1% |
Big decrease for MI5. IO held very well from last Sunday. IO managed to close the gap and even built a small lead over F4. Going from a 10,000 adm. deficit on Thursday to nearly a 1,500 lead on Sunday is amazing. Not a bad hold for F4 on Sunday. Walk-ins are very strong for this movie.

Not too much change from projections although MI5 was adjusted down due to a higher Sunday fall.
| Monday adm. | (so far) | | | August 10 |

9 | Vacation | -- | 288 | -- | -61.3% |
10 | Monster Hunt | 293 | 90 | -69.3% | -- |
Is this the start of IO's decline? IO's walk-ins on weekdays have been extremely good though. The loss of UA theaters/showings have hurt its weekend hold and will continue into Monday but today some of the other theaters have upgraded it to bigger screens or even left it with 2 screens at night. Mediocre hold for MI5. Terrible for F4.
Rank | Movie | Last Thu. Pre-sales | Mon. Pre-sales | % chg |

4 | Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes | 3,231 | 1,405 | -56.5% |

Pretty good for IO. Ok for MI5. Sad for F4.

I wasn't expecting Love Live! to make the Top 10 anywhere outside of Japan.
