 The Interpreter-early contender? Ebert & Roeper = 2Thumb
The movie is getting rave reviews, which, for some reason, despite all the talent involved with it and all, is somewhat surprising.
Thrillers don't often do very well at the Oscars, but everything about the movie reminds me of the great thrillers from back in the 40s and 50s.
Soo...?
The Hollywood Reporter: "Thrillers don't get much smarter than The Interpreter. "

Due to the early release date, I expect it to go the Manchurian Candidate route.

If any, then Golden Globes. Don't see it going to the Oscars.

Golden Globes is harder for drama films than comedy films though.

I am just judging by The Manchurian Candidate. But even that was released at the end of July, so closer to the whole award season. I expect this one to be forgotten by then, unless the accalim will be universal.

Yeah but Streep, I still maintain, was probably in the top 10 Best Sup. Actress contendors.

It'll be hard for The Interpreter to stay on the radar the whole year. I expect it will be 75-82% fresh, which will just be considered another solid early release, like Miracle last year. Both Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman have won before, so this won't be another Julia Roberts on the acting side either. Overall, I think it will be forgotten by the end of the year.

The Interpretor's biggest problem is it is not going to be able to establish itself with the indie crowd, like early contendors usually do, and it's too small to keep up under the weight of the summer season, which we almost seem to already be in.

I expect it to be as big of a hit at the box office as Candidate, at least. The reviews do seem overwhelmingly positive at the moment. Golden Globes love Kidman, so I can see her at least getting a nomination at Globes. Then there's the DVD release.
I don't expect it to get picture but I do see it as a contender in acting categories, screenplay...possibly director and one or two technical categories.

God damn AICN early test screenings. First they went on about how dissapointing Manchurian Canidate is, then talked about this one being a bore and having a terrible ending. But reviews are going the other way. I don't think it'll be a big awards contender, but I do think it'll be a very large hit financially. 25/90

The Interpreter?
I really want to see this movie, but I have to say I'm surprised it's getting rave reviews. From the trailer, it just doesn't seem like it would.
Oh, well. That just makes me more excited to see it.

I think it will be forgotten by Oscar time. Kidman is still suffering from backlash to probably get another nomination this year.

It only has 2 real reviews on RT so far, too early to tell anything other than it appears to be a decent thriller.

This does sound like an interesting film. Not sure about it's Oscar chances. I would think it would have to be univerally praised to be considered for anything, since both Penn and Kidman have already had their glory, and it's being released so early.

Toooo early. That and thrillers aren't usually what the academy go for. in fact, they pretty much only do for epic dramas and war movies, but when they do break down and try to prove they're not, they go for something 180 in the other direction like a campy musical or a comedy. Has a thriller ever really gotten anything? Even for acting, I'm not so sure. its not like Faye has two oscars to her name, or Redford either. Nicholson has some, none of them I think were for Chinatown. I don't know. Thrillers get the least love in the Academy out of all genres now that I think about. I forget, did French Connection get acting????

Right now, I will go againist the voices above.
Kidman and Penn are too strong - I think there is a very good chance that they will be nominated in the acting categories.
*************************
Also will there be any effect - good, bad or none - from last years Oscars when Penn defended the jokes on Jude Law from Chris Rock. From the Oscar nominating voters??????????????
Penn said - "I will tell you who Jude Law is - he is one of our finest actors today.......................

You have to understand that if any reviews leak out early, it is the positive reviews.
Studios love it when the positive reviews leak... it's like free advertising.
Negative reviews, publications usually hold til day of release.
So while I'm sure this film will end up fresh, it definately will not keep it's 100%.

Ebert & Roeper claim this is one of Kidman's best performances.
Isn't that true for every performance of hers, though

And yet many people find her 'overrated'. Strange, huh?

Rave Reviews huh?
This reminds me of another well-reviewed thriller released in April. Changing Lanes. If Changing Lanes couldn't score a nod, this won't.

Changing Lanes with Ben Affleck and Samuel Jackson - I personally don't think that is a good comparision?
