 Re: Hateship Loveship
Kirsten Wiig gives a great dramatic performance in this and Hailee Steinfeld is solid, but it doesn't really go anywhere and a lot of interesting plot devices are set up that are eventually squandered. I thought the development of Wiig's relationship with Guy Pearce for example felt kind of rushed as well as his whole 'redemption' arc. Still, it's solid and worth checking out. B-

Hateship Loveship
An engaging watch for the most part, until you realise that it's not just slow, flat, and overly simplistic for the beginning, but the whole film is like that! There are some nice performances by Guy Pearce (as always; a natural pro), Nick Nolte, and Hailee Steinfeld (gorgeous). However the weak link is Kristen Wiig; yet again playing the socially awkward, plain-faced outcast. There were glimmers of a performance, but this is just a wasted opportunity to show the world her supposed talent. The film rushes toward an ending that feels strangely devoid of anything. It just happens, and all to the sound of melancholy tunes, to which I suppose we're expected to feel solace in her struggle/outcome. Being uneven isn't Hateship Loveship's problem, it's the opposite, it's that it's so fixated on one long and tedious road that it never creates any excitement. It started off so well, too. It's a bit of a disappointment watching the credits roll at the end knowing that it all started so promisingly. It feels like it is made by a first time director who is technically proficient but doesn't really understand filmmaking.

We don't watch every film together. He's back in his own city now.
