Whatever one thinks about religion, he was an important factor that helped in bringing down the Iron Curtain. He gave moral support to the Polish workers and students who tried to pry some sunlight into Warsaw Pact era Poland in the early 80s.

Not like that is saying much considering the track record the Vatican has with it's Popes.
Really, RIP. Not a bad man and quite a bit more levelheaded than most of his predecessors.

May he R.I.P. until Christ's second coming, and I hope he's not judged on the basis of the blasphemise title " Holy Father"

I would only concede that he Helped the "Catholic" church improve it's image.

Agreed. My grandparents are from poland and they knew him from school. they already died a few years ago, so I realize when you get to 85, its been a good long life. Its better it happened fairly quickly, actually. That meant he was working up until fairly recently, which is probably what he would have wanted to do.

could someone explain to me what exactly what was so wrong with the so called iron curtain? i'm being serious. it was a diffrent ideology that in practice was flawed. but someone tell me what was so "evil" about it.

Well for starters, the vast majority of the residents there couldn't leave. That in itself was pretty evil. It was a giant prison.
Someone send Krem an email, he's needed here. I don't have the time or inclination to give a history lesson but he'd relish it.

The problem you forget its just not the philosophy of a different ideology, it was the supression of all OTHER ideologies by violent means.
For the religious, it meant that during the years of communism, religious devotion was frowned upon and surpressed.

The last few years, he was essentially a rolling turnip. Some people will show up for anything, so starved they are for entertainment.
In light of the fact that the recently departed presided over the most monumental sex scandal in the history of the papacy. Nice legacy you left there, chief. We stand on the shoulders of midgets.
Also got to admire the way he covered up the controversy over the Dead Sea Scrolls.
You don't want to know what Nostradamus has in store for us, now that this one's had his ticket punched,

I have a Che Guevara-like t-shirt that has Margaret Thatcher on it instead, and a quote on it says: "We don't need walls to keep our people in".
Shad pointed it out to me, actually.

Anyone have any idea who they are considering as his predessesor? Since they ruled out who was supposed to be his official designate.

Seems like Mel Gibson got what he really wanted...
I don't have a problem with the coverage. Ronald Reagan's funeral was overload. This isn't nearly as bad.

I doubt it...
Anyways, this is Gibson's opportunity. One of the reasons (I think) he made the Passion was to rige/twist the future Pope elections. Krem will probably come in with some source that says otherwise, though.

You need a 66.7% part of the vote (who does vote? Does anyone know? I'm not familiar with the system...). Sadly, there are still people who will vote against candidates because of colors. And, not everyone will agree with this candidate's ideas, anyways.
