Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
Here's how the pre-sales are looking at 5 key theaters (3 Toho, 2 Movix), about 18 hours before the first showings begin on Saturday:

Toho Cinemas Namba 896 - Hero 2 (NEW) 208 - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) 139 - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) 124 - Inside Out (NEW) 106 - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2) 80 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3)
Toho Cinemas Kinshicho 697 - Hero 2 (NEW) 217 - Inside Out (NEW) 207 - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) 188 - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) 183 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3) 126 - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2)

Movix Saitama 634 - Hero 2 (NEW) 177 - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) 104 - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) 101 - Inside Out (NEW) 88 - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2) 40 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3)
Combined: 4,058 - Hero 2 (NEW) 1,075 - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) 998 - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) 969 - Inside Out (NEW) 650 - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2) 520 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3)
As expected, Hero 2 is way out in front largely due to its many, many stage greetings happening Saturday morning. It'll easily win Saturday, and likely the weekend unless it falls apart on Sunday.
I'll post the Weekend Forecast tomorrow evening.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
It's probably worth mentioning that Typhoon Nangka is currently affecting Japan, and winds/rain are expected for all areas. It's not a strong storm, but since it's passing over Japan from today through Sunday, the weekend could be deflated a bit.
If the weekend frame is deflated, Monday is going to be bigger than it already will be since it's already a holiday and the start of Summer vacation.
I don't think the typhoon will be that big of an issue, though, if Friday's current numbers are any indication. They're only down slightly compared to Thursday's admissions at the same point in time so far.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
How do those numbers fare in comparison to other Pixar and Pokemon titles?
I'm hoping Inside Out performs better than Up and Monsters University, it seems to be performing really well and proved leggy in a large portion of it's markets; Especially Australia and South Korea.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
There's a few locations that Pokemon is doing better than last year's film, while it's not at others. It's hard to read, but I don't think it'll really do much better (or worse) than last year's film at the moment.
I wasn't tracking the box office so intently in 2009 as I do now, so I don't know how Inside Out is looking compared to Up, but it's definitely weaker than Monsters University. It's not fair to expect Monster University's numbers for Inside Out, though, considering how big the Monsters brand is in Japan.
A more recent comparison for Inside Out would be Big Hero 6, and pre-sales at Ebina and Saitama are about 1/2 of it around the same point in time.
If I had to guess the weekend ranking right now, I'd say...
1. Hero 2 2. The Boy and the Beast 3. Inside Out/Pokemon (former should have the gross advantage, while the latter will have the admissions advantage) 4. Terminator: Genisys 5. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Okay, thank you. I'm really hoping for an increase for Pokemon, even if a little, and as for Inside Out, God knows if it clicks with the audience, it's legs are going to be sexy!

The Boy and the Beast, Inside Out, and Pokemon are difficult to actually rank, because they should earn similar numbers over the weekend based on my data.
Despite all three being animated films, they attract very different audiences:
>Beast has been playing very well with teens and young adults, so it performs very well in the afternoon and early evening. It's hard to read what the morning ticket sales mean for the actual day/weekend when this happens, so we have to play the waiting game as see how the later showings perform.
>Pokemon plays incredibly well in the AM hours and very early afternoon, but it comes to a halt once the evening hits (75/80%+ of its ticket sales occur before 3PM). It's way ahead of them right now in sales, but that probably won't be the case come the evening updates.
>Inside Out looks to be doing slightly better in the afternoon than in the morning, so kids/families aren't its primary audience, and its evening sales look unimpressive right now, too, so it may be weak with teens.... The afternoon showtimes are where it's doing best, so I'm guessing young adults is its primary demographic at the moment. It'll be easier to read as the day goes on.

Thank you! So, it seems Pokemon Movie 18 will beat last year's in yen but not in USD.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Umi no Hi Weekend)
Almost nothing will be anything in USD due to the 13/14-year low exchange rate this year. I wouldn't say this year's movie will be last year's yet. So far ticket sales look on par, but that's only after a few hours of showtimes being counted. A lot more to go. There's also the typhoon that's hitting all of Japan over the weekend to take into consideration. It doesn't appear to be hurting the box office much, but maybe everything could be doing better without it. I've read that some trains in Osaka and other parts of the country are seeing delays.

What was Pokemon's previous opening?
Hopefully your predictions ring true for Pokemon and has a good multiplier.

Like you mentioned, performance seems to be on par to last year's film, so technically Pokemon's decline has come to a halt. Let's hope that is the case and a better gross can be achieved.

What is the reception for this film currently? Are there critical reviews of films such as Pokemon, Yokai Watch, Doraemon, etc? EDIT: And also Inside Out!

Those three franchises are geared towards very young audiences (8 and under), so they're given more freedom when it comes to reviews. The Doraemon films receive generally good reviews, and sometimes they'll get a nomination for Best Animated Film of the year. Of the annual franchises, Detective Conan is always the best received by critics.

Hero 2's second wave of stage greetings (127 theaters worth of sold out/nearly sold out showtimes) occurred over the last hour; that's why it experienced a major jump.

As we near the mid-day point...
-Hero 2 looks on track to deliver the biggest opening day for any live-action film this year. Its opening day has, however, been boosted by numerous stage greetings, so it's still uncertain what will happen to its business tomorrow.
-Pokemon continues to track evenly with last year's film, if not very, very slightly ahead of it. It has another hour or two of solid updates before it's done for the day (business dies off in the evening for such a young skewing franchise). Many theaters don't play it after 7PM.
-Inside Out and The Boy and the Beast, in its second weekend, remain in a close race and will begin their catch-up game with Pokemon soon.
It's too close to say what order the three animated flicks will come in behind Hero 2 at the moment.

It appears The Boy and the Beast may overtake Inside Out a couple hours earlier than expected. It played very well in the afternoon/evening last weekend and over the weekdays versus the morning, and it's beginning the same process again today.
Let's see if either of them can catch up to Pokemon by the end of the day.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Umi no Hi Weekend)
It'll continue to do decently until around 6PM. After that, its showtimes are few and far between and evening business is very weak for young skewing films.

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Usual Locations - Seating/Showtimes
Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions [43% of Market]
Saturday Top 10, 07/18
#Admissions (% change), [#theaters/#showings] - Film (Week of Release) 127,815 (-), [149/1,065] - Hero 2 (NEW) 67,942 (-), [148/765] - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) 66,063 (-37%), [147/1,039] - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) 59,793 (-), [151/1,098] - Inside Out (NEW) 44,536 (-45%), [148/1,003] - Terminator: Genysis (Week 2) 31,709 (-08%), [76/191] - Love Live! The School Idol Movie (Week 6) 31,117 (-38%), [149/918] - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3) 6,247 (-37%), [146/218] - Mad Max: Fury Road (Week 5) 5,778 (-36%), [64/191] - Shaun the Sheep Movie (Week 3) 3,879 (-34%), [84/167] - Anpanman: Mija and the Magic Lamp (Week 3)
Note: Typhoon Nangka will be affecting all of Japan through the weekend, so weekend admissions could be a bit deflated as a result.
>Hero 2 delivered the biggest opening day this year for any live-action film in admissions at the usual locations, and secures its #1 debut with that tally. It's, as expected, coming in below its major hit predecessor, but if it's able to clear ¥700 million and 500,000 over the weekend (and ¥900 million after Monday), it should be capable of reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone with over/under 4 million admissions.
¥5.7 billion+ is required to unseat Cinderella as the year's current highest-grossing live-action film, so that'd be a nice extended goal for it target.
>Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages managed to hold onto second place for the day in admissions, but its low avg. ticket prices likely puts The Boy and the Beast ahead of it in gross.
Overall, the eighteenth Pokemon film almost mirrored last year's film for the day, so if the same happens tomorrow, it'll be aiming for an opening weekend of near ¥400 million and 350,000-370,000 admissions.
>The Boy and the Beast held well in the face of so much new competition, but I was expecting a sub-30% drop. It could still see a sub-30% drop if it does well tomorrow, though, and it's probably going to come in second place for the weekend (third in admissions behind Pokemon) with over ¥400 million and 310,000-330,000 admissions based on Saturday's results.
>Inside Out comes in fourth place for the day, down around 40% compared to Big Hero 6's first day. It appears that Disney/Pixar releasing their original films up against Pokemon, a big domestic live-action film, and a Mamoru Hosoda film (the key competitor), is a very bad idea. This exact same situation happened in July 2012 with Brave.
Inside Out isn't another Brave, far from that disastrous performance three years ago, but if it doesn't improve significantly tomorrow, it'll still be Pixar's second or third worst debut in Japan with ¥375-400 million ($3.0-3.2 million) / 280,000-300,000 admissions based on Saturday's results.
Updated Weekend (2-Day) Projections:
¥700-750 million ($5.6-6.0 million) / 500,000-525,000 - Hero 2 (NEW) ¥420-450 million ($3.4-3.7 million) / 310,000-330,000 - The Boy and the Beast (Week 2) ¥385-410 million ($3.1-3.3 million) / 350,000-370,000 - Pokemon XY: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (NEW) ¥375-400 million ($3.0-3.2 million) / 280,000-300,000 - Inside Out (NEW) ¥300-325 million ($2.4-2.6 million) / 215,000-230,000 - Terminator: Genisys (Week 2) ¥225-250 million ($1.8-2.0 million) / 145,000-160,000 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 3)
