 Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updating
I'm not 100% certain that The Boy and the Beast will beat Terminator: Genisys this weekend, yet. I have little doubt it'll beat its total gross, but the opening could be close. It appears to be leading in pre-sales at the majority of locations, but few locations are by considerable margins.
And it's really difficult for original films to open above the ¥500 million mark (¥300 million is often too high a goal), and a sub-¥500 million debut may not be enough to win the weekend.
Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu are becoming an established brand, but this is only their second film together (Hosoda's fourth overall film). It could still take another effort or two before they're recognized by everyone in the same way as Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, as their successors, before their opening weekends are major events.
It should be noted, though, that Hosoda and Studio Chizu's first film together, 2012's Wolf Children, did become the highest-grossing animated film of all-time that wasn't based on an existing property or brand name.
It'll be airing on NTV Friday before The Boy and the Beast opens, following the broadcast Hosoda's earlier film, Summer Wars last Friday, which earned an impressive 11.8% household rating (beating Toy Story 3 in their head-to-head).

 Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Sat. Seating/Showtimes
It actually opened today (Friday), and so far it's looking... okay. It'll likely do much better in the evening since everyone is still at work or school right now, but I'm projecting a first day around ¥110 million (almost $1 million) right now.
A Friday of that level would point towards an opening weekend of perhaps ¥400-450 million ($3.3-3.7 million), and a 3-day total of ¥500-550 million ($4.1-4.5 million).
Terminator: Salvation opened to ¥592.1 million ($6.1 million) over its opening weekend, but a huge ¥1.021 billion ($10.5 million) after previews were included. It was quite frontloaded and went on to earn just ¥3.32 billion ($34 million), down 60% compared to Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
So, at the moment, it doesn't look like Terminator: Genysis will open as high, but it has a better release date, so legs should be a little stronger. It'll need to open closer to ¥500 million than ¥400 million, though, if it's to match Terminator: Salvation's gross (forget about matching its USD gross, however, with the exchange rate).
I'll post the Weekend Forecast tomorrow.

 Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Sat. Seating/Showtimes
Yeah USD total is not going to happen. $10.5m seems huge also when you say previews its 3-day Fri-Sun opening right?

 Re: Japan Box Office: Usual Locations Sat. Seating/Showtimes
No, it had a weekends worth of previews the prior week. Before 2012, previews occurring over the prior weekend weren't uncommon for films and they'd usually get included in the actual opening weekend.
But now films very rarely have any previews, and those that do are limited and don't have them included in the opening weekend gross.

 Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast
Weekend Forecast (07/11-12)  01 (--) ¥575,000,000 ($4.7 million), 0, ¥575,000,000 ($4.7 million), The Boy and the Beast (Toho) NEW 02 (--) ¥450,000,000 ($3.7 million), 0, ¥450,000,000 ($3.7 million), Terminator: Genysis (Paramount) NEW 03 (01) ¥430,000,000 ($3.5 million), -46%, ¥1,650,000,000 ($13.5 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron (Disney) Week 2 04 (02) ¥122,000,000 ($1.0 million), -44%, ¥1,680,000,000 ($13.7 million), Love Live! The School Idol Movie (Shochiku) Week 5 05 (03) ¥80,000,000 ($650,000), -36%, ¥1,300,000,000 ($10.6 million), Mad Max: Fury Road (Warner Bros.) Week 4 06 (--) ¥75,000,000 ($610,000), 0, ¥75,000,000 ($610,000), Ari no Mama de Itai (Toei) NEW 07 (04) ¥73,000,000 ($595,000), -35%, ¥200,000,000 ($1.7 million), Shaun the Sheep Movie (Tohokushinsha) Week 2 08 (--) ¥70,000,000 ($570,000), 0, ¥70,000,000 ($570,000), Tag (Shochiku) NEW 09 (05) ¥69,000,000 ($560,000), -31%, ¥1,400,000,000 ($11.6 million), Sea Town Diary (Toho) Week 5 10 (06) ¥59,000,000 ($480,000), -30%, ¥155,000,000 ($1.3 million), Anpanman: Mija and the Magic Lamp (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) Week 2
>The Boy and the Beast heads into the weekend with an advantage in pre-sales (36%) over Terminator: Genysis, and its pre-sales suggests it could do 400,000+ admissions over the weekend. That should be enough to almost ensure a debut above ¥500 million, though hopefully it comes in over ¥600 million so it'll be a contender for biggest film of 2015 since a multiplier over 10 is likely.
A lot of expectations are being placed on The Boy and the Beast's box office performance, since director Mamoru Hosoda and his recently founded animation studio, Studio Chizu, are the expected successors to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli since their retirement/film department shutdown.
All of Hosoda's films have won the Best Animated Prize in their respective year, and his films have shown considerable growth over each other (very similar to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's earlier films before becoming Japan's biggest names).
The Boy and the Beast is already planned for release in many markets, including France, UK, Australia, with an Oscar qualifying run in the United States later this year and release early next year.
Mamoru Hosoda's previous films:
Opening Weekend / Admissions [Screens] -> Total Gross / Admissions - Film (Year) ¥365.1 million / 276,326 [381] -> ¥4.22 billion / 3.42 million - Wolf Children (2012) ¥127.5 million / 109,200 [127] -> ¥1.65 billion / 1.41 million - Summer Wars (2009) Total Gross - ¥260 million [6] - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
>Terminator: Genysis appears to be doing fairly well, but it's unlikely to match Terminator: Salvation's performance in the market. Pre-sales are decent, but if it doesn't have impressive walk-up and strong evening business, it could end up missing the ¥500 million mark over the weekend.

 Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Beast/Terminator)
Usual Locations - Saturday Admissions (43% of Market)
Hourly Updates 10AM -> 11AM - 12PM -> 1PM -> 2PM -> 3PM -> 4PM
9,532 -> 15,021 -> 22,087 -> 30,484 -> 39,646 -> 54,328 -> 64,538 - The Boy and the Beast (NEW) 7,775 -> 10,619 -> 16,920 -> 26,203 -> 29,614 -> 39,383 -> 46,272 - Terminator: Genysis (NEW) 4,160 -> 5,748 -> 9,876 -> 13,433 -> 14,974 -> 25,986 -> 29,257 - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Week 2)
The Boy and the Beast and Terminator: Genysis were fairly close during the morning and early afternoon times, but the former has since managed to take an impressive lead.
The Boy and the Beast is actually tracking slightly ahead of Big Hero 6, so if it keeps up the pace, it may debut over ¥600 million afterall!

Great update Corpse!
Though I may be getting ahead of myself, any news on Pokemon and your personal predictions? You think we might see a decline from the last entry, and have pre-orders been good?

The Pokemon Company hasn't released any advance ticket sales to my knowledge, which could be a sign they aren't comfortable reporting them. They used to report the ticket sales leading up to a new film's release (since they were always very impressive), but they didn't report any last year either, and last year's film was one of the weakest openings in the franchise history. The new film should, honestly, see an increase since they're throwing almost every Legendary Pokemon into the film this year and are offering a few different benefits for buying a ticket, but I truly think children and their parents have moved onto Yo-Kai Watch. It's not just the box office results that are down, it's literally every medium that Pokemon is in that's lost significant sales to Yo-Kai Watch. So, we'll see. Since we're entering the Summer box office season at last, I'll provide more regular updates for the next 6-8 weeks.

They've thrown everything at it, good incentives for pre-purchases, more robust partnerships (Visa & Yahoo initiative) and a continuation of the Pikachu promotion starting in late summer as they always have. Pokemon lost a lot of mindshare in the kids segment due to Yo-Kai Watch sudden popularity; I'm just hoping it does better than last year numbers - there's more competition this year it seems with Inside Out coming out the same week and most likely a good hold from The Boy and the Beast if it performs as planned. Let's hope it reaches 3 Billion Yen - almost did it last year.

I hope it does better than last year's film, because if it doesn't... I don't know if the franchise will be capable of recovering if Yo-Kai Watch continues to mesmerize children. The child population shrinks every year, so it has no opportunity to gain new fans.

 Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Beast/Terminator)
How come Yôkai has hurt Pokemon so much yet franchises like Doraemon and Conan which also attract a lot of kids (especially the former) seem to remain unaffected ?
I mean Pokemon and Yokaî movies come out nearly 6 months apart...That's longer than for both Doraemon and Conan. You wouldn't think the second would hurt the first so much.
Btw I just saw that december will see the first Chibi Maruko-chan movie in 23 years. Given that it's been a staple of Japanese animation for over two decades, what would be your predictions ? And do you have the last movie's total gross ?

And do you have the last movie's total gross ? Yo-kai Watch and Pokemon are fairly similar, and compete for the the same audience across every medium (tv, games, merchandise, etc.). Yo-kai Watch is the first franchise that has beaten Pokemon in sales across every medium. Its anime ratings are better, its games are selling just as well, and its merchandise sales are WAY stronger. Doraemon has been around for 6 decades and is a generational property. Kids, their parents, and grandparents all grew up enjoying Doraemon. And Detective Conan actually has more teens and adult fans than it does children. Its themes are a little too mature for the elementary aged audience. That's why its films have solid weekdays unlike all the others. I'll check on the last Chibi Maruko-chan film, but I doubt I'll be able to find any numbers for it. It also targets a very young audience, and I expect it'll perform similarly to the Crayon Shin-chan films.

The School Idol Movie [Stage Greetings Round 4] 2,141 (-52%), [41/86] - Ju-on: The Final (Week 4) 2,077 (-57%), [110/193] - The Pearls of the Stone Man (Week 4) 2,050 (-51%), [77/95] - Ghost in the Shell: Evangelion (Week 4) 1,809 (-48%), [40/91] - Still Alice (Week 3) 1,790 (-58%), [113/237] - Strayer's Chronicle (Week 3) 1,684 (-77%), [81/89] - Tomorrowland (Week 6) 1,514 (-45%), [101/103] - Biri Gal (Week 11)

>Very impressive for The Boy and the Beast. It remained strong throughout the entire day, indicating its audience is very diverse, and looks on track for a ¥600 million+ debut with 450-475,000 admissions based on Saturday's usual locations results. It'd be pretty incredible if it increases on Sunday and makes 500,000 admissions a possibility... Sunday pre-sales appear higher than Saturday's, so here's hoping for that.
Mamoru Hosoda (top left in the photo) and Studio Chizu have worked hard to establish their names as the top Japanese animation team over the past few years, and it's looking to have paid off with audiences accepting them as Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's successors with this debut.
Toho is reporting the film outpaced Hosoda's last film, Wolf Children, by 62% on its first day, and are projecting a gross over ¥7 billion ($60 million). For reference, Wolf Children opened to ¥365.1 million / 276,326 admissions, and grossed ¥4.22 billion / 3.41 million admissions in July 2012 (11.6 multiplier), becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever not based on an existing property or brand.
>Terminator: Genysis is looking reasonably strong, too, and could be on track for a ¥500 million debut with a projected 325-350,000 admissions (thanks its adult audience and 3D) based on Saturday's results at the usual locations. I don't think it'll reach the ¥592 million opening of Terminator Salvation, but if it comes close, it could end up outgrossing it thanks to a better release date.
>Avengers: Age of Ultron fell very hard, probably more than expected even for a Marvel/DC film which have crappy legs in Japan, often struggling for multipliers above 4. Most Marvel/DC films drop around 50% in their seconds weekends, so hopefully Ultron can improve a bit tomorrow and avoid a 60% drop.
