This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
...in low-budget, crappy, Australian VOD hell. The man cannot act, and he deserves to stay doing shit like this forever. He's already over-achieved.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
I don't mind him. He outshines Christian Bale in Terminator, and he is very good in The Debt, holding his own against Jessica Chastain.
He is definitely dull in the "Titans" franchise, but I will forgive him when this franchise also brings out the worst in an actor as good, as legendary, as Ralph Fiennes.

Bale is awesome in Terminator: Salvation. Worthington isn't bad, but there's no way he can ever outshine a man of Bale's calibre.

Worthington was the best part of Terminator: Salvation.
And I enjoy him in everything I've seen.

I find Bale fairly boring in Terminator Salvation, and I love Christian Bale. He seems bored by it.

Bale was terrible there, I don't think he was even in the same film

I think Bale hated the experience on that film, and it showed with his acting. Probably explains why he blew up on set.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Has there ever been another example of an actor like Worthington who becomes the biggest actor in the world during 1 year (2009), and after shows up in nothing noteworthy anymore at all, and ends up doing VOD for the rest of his career (if it wasn't for sequels they make to movies that made him a star in that same break-out year)?

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
I suppose 2010 was Worthington's year actually. Avatar came out at the very end of 2009, so most of its run was in 2010, then in the summer of 2010 he had Clash of the Titans. Or to be precise, from 21st May 2009 to 20th May 2010, which then includes Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans, and Avatar.
But anyway, getting to your question; is there another example of short-term fame followed by years of irrelevance, perhaps Orlando Bloom? Although his peak was much greater than just one year. Or....Dolph Lundgren? Not the biggest star in the world at any point, but Masters of the Universe and Rocky IV made him rather well known, then followed 25 years of DTV.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
I think he's reached a higher level than Lundgren slightly in terms of concistency and bit of a higher peak too, Bloom is indeed a more decent example..but I consider him still to be much more durable in maintaining a rather high level. Bloom brings me to Elijah Wood actually, that's the best other example I can think of right now.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Tobey Maguire? Even between the Spider-Man films, he was only in a couple movies (Seabiscuit and The Good German - I'm guessing the former was because Gary Ross had already worked with Maguire on Pleasantville and thought he would be a great fit for the film?). Then he disappeared from theatrical film acting, save for a couple indies, then The Great Gatsby, then a couple more indies.
I can't figure it out. Did Maguire voluntarily take a break from acting to raise his family? I know some actresses take breaks like that, but I know a couple other actors have done this too (e.g., Rick Moranis quitting acting to become a full-time dad, and choosing to stay in retirement.)

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Except Worthington was never hyped as the next great thing to come along. For shear Audacity, I have to go to Christopher Lambert as The Highlander (1986). This guy received Incredible worldwide hype during the film's pre-release pomotions, by All Media, television, magazines such as Life and Time, and at the level mind you of Michael Jackson and Thriller. What the hell for???
The next greatest acting hype ever, *I Believe*, was for 'the next James Bond'. George Lazenby. Huge, huge pre-release publicity, at the level of Jaws.

Lambert is also Tarzan in Greystoke, which I believe was a much-hyped film at the time. (And is a sentimental favorite of mine.)

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Fortress and Gunmen are fantastic films. I pretty much hate all Highlander films -- never got into them, and have no interest to do so, but Lambert is good in certain roles. His French-Englishness is kind of appealing.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
I easily confused this movie with...Chasing Mavericks Seems a far superior surfing movie than Drift, for the large part perhaps because of Michael Apted. Which also gets me thinking, why wasn't Michael Apted chosed to direct any of the last 3 Terminators..he seems much more respected than the others...and he probably would have done a much better job with it.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Yeah, there are loads of directors of his level. They had to choose someone. It's not like Apted did such a wonderful job on The World Is Not Enough for everybody to stop, take notice and try and get him for their upcoming film projects.

Re: This is where SAM WORTHINGTON belongs..
Michael Apted is a talented journeyman director with one major contribution to the art of cinema: the continuing "Up" documentary series tracing the lives of a few British people from childhood onward.
He also directed such very fine films as Coal Miner's Daughter and Gorillas in the Mist.
