When should I expect to see a final total? Like December?
I hope Terminator does well.

The latest would be when Eiren releases the 2015 yearly results, which is the last week of January. However, its total will probably be released before then in articles discussing the DVD release, Toei's quarter earnings, or something.

I cannot imagine Genisys doing well in Japan. While Arnold is generally liked, I think, I just feel that Japanese people don't care so much about churned-out US franchise blockbusters.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2015 Charts Updated
It's a hard one to gauge. And it's true that Japanese audiences aren't very interested in rebooted/revived Hollywood franchises.
Although, Terminator: Salvation had a huge opening weekend (boosted by previews), showing the series still had a significant fanbase, but it was insanely frontloaded and ended up dropping 60%+ from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
The film having Arnold back is a positive, and it's generating decent online activity. However, the poor reviews and now box office numbers in the US and overseas certainly won't bring it any goodwill before it opens next week, either.
I doubt it'll end up a big disappointment, but I also doubt it'll do really well, either.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron finally reaches Japan and becomes 2015's widest release so far, but having so many seats and showtimes doesn't always guarantee a blockbuster hit (see: The Hobbit, The Amazing Spider-Man).
There are some mixed signs concerning the film this weekend.
-At the moment, pre-sales are good but not great (from what I'm counting, they're on par with Into the Woods right now).
-Last Friday's broadcast of The Avengers only earned a 9.4% household rating which is definitely mediocre leading up to the release of the sequel.
-The film also won't experience the 3D boost that the original film had in 2012, the last year when most films could easily earn 60/70%+ 3D shares. And with only a 27% 3D share in seats, a sub-20% 3D share is very likely.
-Love Live! The School Idol Movie is going to make it look close on Saturday since it's having even more stage greetings, and is currently outpacing it at various locations.
One notable plus leading into the weekend, though, is the film receiving a one-shot manga (covering why Tony Stark created the Ultron program) in Shonen Magazine this week, which is similar to the treatment given to Big Hero 6 back in December.
Avengers Age of Ultron should still handily win the weekend but a debut above ¥500 million isn't looking certain at this point, which would pretty disappointing and likely result it in finishing below the first film.

Weekend Forecast (07/04-05) 01 (--) ¥580,000,000 ($4.7 million), 0, ¥580,000,000 ($4.7 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron (Disney) NEW 02 (01) ¥280,000,000 ($2.3 million), +05%, ¥1,550,000,000 ($12.6 million), Love Live! >Avengers: Age of Ultron has improved with its pre-sales, and they're comfortably above Cinderella's level heading into the weekend. It'd be surprising if it misses a ¥500 million debut now, I'd say, and ¥600 million could be within reach if pre-sales aren't misleading.
>Love Live! The School Idol Movie's pre-sales have once again increased over last weekend's pre-sales. Its pre-sales for Saturday are already over 50% of its overall available tickets for the day (they're dead even with Avengers: Age of Ultron at the usual locations). So, there's a pretty good chance it's going to experience another weekend increase, and if not, it'll have a minimal drop.
It's going to easily exceed the ¥2 billion milestone now, and it's only playing on 121 screens.
>Anpanman typically debuts with similar numbers every year, so this one probably won't be any different.
>Shaun the Sheep Movie could end up with a surprise debut this weekend. Its pre-sales are surprisingly solid and it's been ranking reasonably well online, too. I would predict a bit higher, but I can't recall the last film released by Tohokushinsha to make the Top 10 (much less near the Top 5). We'll see.
>The 10th position is up in the air, but I'm going with Code Geass: Akito the Exiled - Chapter 4. Last weekend's top debut, Strayer's Chronicle, is another contender but it's looking at a sizable drop this weekend, and ¥40 million is probably too high for it.

So judging by the poster, Iron Man is still the most popular Avenger in Japan?

By far. All the other individual Avenger films have bombed except for Iron Man.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Avengers)
Avengers: Age of Ultron is tracking ~14% ahead of Cinderella at the usual locations at the same point in time (2PM) in ticket sales.
I thought it would be performing slightly better as its pre-sales were quite strong, but maybe it hasn't reached its busiest time of the day yet (its demographic is hard to gauge). It'll also have a higher avg. ticket price than Cinderella, so that'll play a key role in projecting its gross.
Either way, it's looking very good, a bit better than most expectations, and should break ¥300 million, maybe ¥350 million today, putting it on course for an opening weekend of ¥600-700 million ($5-5.5 million). That'd give it the biggest opening weekend for a superhero film outside of the Spider-Man franchise.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Avengers)
Avengers: Age of Ultron played really, really well in the evening and definitely broke ¥400 million (around $3.5 million) in its first day (280,000-300,000 admissions). It ended up outpacing Cinderella's first day in ticket sales by ~35%.
Depending on how the film performs on Sunday, it'll possibly exceed ¥800 million ($6.5-7 million) over the weekend!
If that happens, and even if it's frontloaded (a multiplier below only 5 this time of year is very hard to miss, though), it could be looking at a gross above ¥4 billion (near $35 million), outgrossing the original film's ¥3.61 billion total by at least 10-15%!

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Avengers)
It's certainly a surprise. The Avengers was a nice success (10th biggest film of 2012), but it seemed to be a novel success supported by Obon Week since there were very little bumps for the Marvel sequels that followed its release.
Even if Avengers: Age of Ultron misses ¥800 million over the weekend, ¥700 million+ is practically locked, meaning it'll achieve the biggest opening weekend for an imported live-action film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 from 2011.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Avengers)
Avengers: Age of Ultron is remaining flat today so far, up about half a percent compared to yesterday (as of 2PM).
Quite impressive. There are fewer showings Sunday night versus Saturday night, so if it doesn't distance itself by 8PM, it'll be looking at a decrease today. However, that decrease is going to be pretty small considering it'll probably keep pace until tonight.
It's looking good for around 550,000 admissions, so depending on its avg. ticket price, it's on track for ~¥775-850 million ($6.3-6.9 million).
Also, Shaun the Sheep Movie is doing surprisingly well, too. It's already matched its Saturday admissions for the day, and could have a realistic shot at ¥100 million+ ($1 million) over the weekend. That'd be good enough for at least a Top 5 debut, if not even fourth place. There's no question whether or not it'll be Tohokushinsha's biggest opener now. They may have had a film crack the Top 10 in the past (none that I can recall), but certainly not the Top 5.

Avengers: Age of Ultron sold more tickets than any other film this calendar year at the usual locations above, except for Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F and Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno.
The admissions here should definitely get it over 500,000 for the weekend, with 525-575,000 being the expected range depending on its demographic breakdown. If it played well with kids/families, it'll land on the high end (the Sunday decrease of 19% suggests it appealed more towards teens/adults, however).
I'll post the Weekend Estimates soon.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron surprises over the weekend, with its estimated debut being the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film since Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends from last September, and the biggest opening weekend for an imported live-action film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 from 2011.
The weekend estimate is also 60% greater than the opening weekend of The Avengers, but it's important to note that the original film opened on a Wednesday, so it's difficult to compare them.
Additionally, the weekend estimate gives Ultron the fourth biggest opening weekend for a superhero (Marvel/DC) film of all-time, in admissions as well, behind only the original Spider-Man trilogy.
>Shaun the Sheep Movie also surprised and may have cracked ¥100 million over the weekend. Estimates have its weekend admissions around 80,000, so it'll depend on just how young the film skewed on whether or not it'll open above the mark. The film is only playing on just 145 screens and released through an independent studio, Tohokushinsha, that to my knowledge has never had an opening this high in the past. Talk about a pleasant surprise.

That's really big for AoU, if the exchange was favourable its USD total would have been even more impressive.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Avengers)
Weekend Actuals are out but I don't want the Weekend Results and 2015 Charts at the bottom of this page, so I'm going to update the two posts above this one, with Age of Ultron's actual, to finish this page.

>Avengers: Age of Ultron delivers the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film this year, and the fourth biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film, behind only the original Spider-Man trilogy.
Playing very wide on 774 screens, the Avengers sequel sold 505,521 admissions in its debut weekend.
Superhero films tend to be really frontloaded in Japan, but a multiplier below 4 is very unlikely, so a total over ¥3 billion ($25 million) is incredibly likely. Ultron should have a good chance of exceeding the original film's ¥3.61 billion, too, and I believe it'll reach the ¥4 billion (about $35 million) milestone, becoming only the fourth Marvel/DC film to reach that milestone after the original Spider-Man trilogy.
>Love Live! The School Idol Movie falls to second place, but still posted a strong weekend. The animated idols sold 150,488 tickets over the weekend, and exceeded 1 million admissions in the process.
>Shaun the Sheep Movie made a very surprising debut in fourth place (third in admissions!), selling 93,582 admissions across just 145 screens over the weekend. The Aardman Animations film posted the best debut for independent distributor, Tohokushinsha.
>Anpanman: Mija and the Magic Lamp came in well above estimates, and actually debuted 18% higher than last year's release. Playing on 163 screens over the weekend, the latest film in the long-running Anpanman series sold 70,642 admissions.
>And debuting outside the Top 10, Code Geass: Akito the Exiled - Chapter 4 came in twelfth place over the weekend.
