I am only aware of the iconography, not the actual "story" and characters.

This is arguably one of, if not the biggest brand in China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and a huge area of East Asia. Hello Kitty is potentially a significantly bigger global brand than even Lego. It has a big following in North America and other markets as well.
You heard it hear first, this could do $500 m +.
