Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating
Yeah for Dragon Ball. I wonder if it'll show up on Rentrak in the worldwide charts in a couple weeks because it's releasing in a bunch of Latin American markets.

It was on there when it was released in Japan but there weren't as many big films out then so it was easier to make the list.

If it does though that would give an up to date total for Japan and the other markets it's in too.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Japanese News and Discussion [Week 1]
I'm going to try something a little different in this thread for a few weeks. Between the downtime of box office related news (Tuesday-Thursday), I'll be posting some recent hot topics in the Japanese news, once a week, for anyone who's reading and interested in Japan.

Japanese News and Discussion [Week 1]:

>China bans 38 Japanese animes, including popular shows such as 'Attack on Titan', 'Death Note', and 'Sword Art Online'. >The Japanese NEET population has declined for a second-consecutive year, down to about 560,000, according to Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. A NEET (meaning ""Not in Education, Employment, or Training") is an young individual, between the ages of 20-34. As a result, the unemployment rate for people between 20-24 has dropped to 6.3%; and is also down to 5.2% for people between the ages of 25-29. This is the lowest unemployment rates for these ages groups since 1997.

Glad you're interested, and hopefully a few others are (or will be), too.

When I was tutoring last semester, I had some of the students research a trending Japanese news topic every other week and translate it. Writing in Japanese (hiragana and katakana) proved especially difficult for everyone (even their written English was pretty poor, though), and with today's technology I wonder if writing in general has become a problem for younger people...

Image
>Sea Town Diary (or "Our Little Sister") is director Hirokazu Kore-eda's follow-up to his box office hit and critically acclaimed, Like Father, Like Son, and reviews from Cannes and out of Japan are pretty positive, too. It's likely to do well and should open atop this weekend's box-office, but the animated idols of Love Live! may be too much to overcome...

Image
>Love Live! The School Idol Movie is the first film of the Love Live! School Idol project, which has become a big deal in Japan this year. It's likely to deliver a good debut this weekend, probably even on top, despite playing at 121 locations. And 12 of those theaters are also having fan meet and greets happening over the weekend.

The animated idol group even had a #1 album earlier this year selling 85,000 copies in its first week, making them the first animated character group to debut at #1 since 2010 (K-ON), and the album has since sold more than 100,000 copies to be certified Gold in Japan.

10 (07) ¥25 million ($200,000), -46%, ¥130 million ($1.0 million), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) (Kadokawa) Week 2

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie sold over 60,000 tickets in advance at the usual locations, which is nearly double the advance ticket sales for the rest of the Top 10 combined before Saturday showings began two hours ago. Most of its showtimes up until the evening/night (around 8PM) are half-full or better.

However, it's only playing on 121 screens (62% accounted for at the usual locations) so it won't open as high as pre-sales indicate, but the animated idols should easily take the #1 spot over the weekend and could open above ¥300 million, delivering a very, very impressive PSA, as a result.

They'll become the second animated group to have a #1 album and #1 movie in the same year, after K-ON! accomplished the same feat back in 2010.

>Sea Town Diary looks like it'll have a respectable debut based on early ticket sales but in order to debut at #1, it'll need very strong night business and a substantial increase on Sunday. It's the underdog despite playing on almost 3x as many screens as Love Live!, and should turn out to be another success for director Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (06/13-14)
I haven't had the time for a proper Saturday update, so here's how it looked yesterday:

Love Live! was pretty massive yesterday and may have broke ¥200 million on its first day. It sold through at least 51% of its available tickets, and with the special stage greetings and other event showings included, probably sold through 55-60% of its available tickets.

It'll be way down today without the stage greetings and such but more than ¥300 million looks incredibly likely for the weekend, if not ¥400 million as I'm sure fans were more than willing to pay incredibly high ticket prices for this one.

Sea Town Diary met expectations and will have a solid debut in second place. The film is seeing a nice increase today, though, and if it continues into the evening, it might climb closer to a ¥300 million debut.

All the holdovers are still doing well, most being down just 30-40% compared to last Saturday. If Sunday turns out well, a few could see sub-30% holds and so far so good.

Weekend Admissions, 06/13-14

24,718 (-26%), [142/688] - Cinderella (Week 8)
23,590 (-27%), [132/867] - Initiation Love (Week 4)
20,257 (-29%), [130/638] - Biri Gal (Week 7)
19,889 (-), [74/76] - Love Live! The School Idol Movie @ Makuhai Messe [Live Fan Greetings] (NEW)
12,432 (-), [18/229] - Yowamushi Pedal: The Movie (NEW)
11,562 (-35%), [97/639] - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) (Week 2)
9,041 (-), [33/41] - TVXQ! Special Live Tour (NEW)

6,250 (-19%), [129/273] - Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! (Week 9)
5,221 (-45%), [133/395] - Kakekomi (Week 5)

Sunday was a Toho Cinemas Discount Day (40% off tickets at their locations), so the weekend drops above will come in higher on the national level. It depends on the demographic of each film, but holds usually come in ~5/6% higher.

Love Live! The School Idol Project Movie performed exceptionally well, and with the fan greetings admissions included, sold 153,631 tickets all-together at the usual locations (62% of its overall screen count). Those nearly 20,000 admissions from the fan greeting event sold for ¥2,800 each (60% higher than a general admission fee), so the avg. ticket price for the film is going to be very high despite Sunday being a Toho Cinemas discount day.

The Love Love! idols have without a doubt become the second animated group to open atop the box office now, though.

Sea Town Diary sold more tickets than any other domestic live-action film since Biri Gal from 7 weeks ago but its audience probably consists of a fair amount of seniors, and with Toho Cinema Day, it's avg. ticket price is likely to be pretty low.

And overall nice holds across the board, though their drops by gross will come in higher due to the discount day.

Weekend Estimates will be posted soon.

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie delivers the best opening weekend since Cinderella back in April and the biggest debut for a Shochiku release so far this year, and it's only playing on 121 screens.

The Love Live! idols have grown considerably in popularity over the past year and have now become the second animated group to hold the #1 positions on both the box office charts and Oricon album charts in the same year.

>Sea Town Diary posts an acceptable opening, especially for a June release (often a dumping ground), and should become a decent sized success for director Hirokazu Kore-eda, following his box office and award winning Like Father, Like Son from two years ago.

>Tomorrowland held up pretty nicely and could eventually gross a decent ¥1.5 billion. That's certainly nothing to be too excited about, but considering its poor performance practically everywhere else, it's having a respectable run in Japan so far.

>Prophecy held particularly well and any doubts of it reaching the ¥1 billion milestone should be gone. It'll still barely exceed the mark, but it'll keep the domestic live-action ¥1 billion earners alive for an eighth-consecutive week, a notably difficult streak for the May/June box office.

>Shinjuku Swan is on the verge of becoming Sony's biggest domestic release, after being their first domestic release to debut at #1, and will also become their first ¥1 billion earner since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from April of last year.

Do you think JW will be a blockbuster like Jurassic Park, or be another Hobbit?

Neither. :P

The original was truly one-of-a-kind and had Spielberg at the helm whilst at the peak of his popularity, following the major blockbuster returns of Jaws and E.T (they're a decade apart, but they established Spielberg as Hollywood's biggest director). Indiana Jones and his other pre-Jurassic Park films were also notable hits, too.

Jurassic World is very unlikely gross over ¥10 billion seeing how the sequels dropped off heavily with worse reviews and no Spielberg, with Jurassic Park III dropping 60% from the original's gross, but it's not going to bomb in the same way The Hobbit films did either. It's also important to note that no Hollywood live-action film has reached ¥10 billion since Alice in Wonderland in 2010 (thanks to the 3D boom that year).

It's probably going to land somewhere above/under the ¥5 billion milestone, and I'd be willing to bet it'll end up a bit above the mark thanks to this weekend in the US and overseas.

The massive success it's achieving in the US and overseas will help generate buzz, and the reviews that are much stronger than the last two sequels will help it out, too. This is the advantage of releasing movies late in Japan. It allows for additional time to build interest in a market that Hollywood has been losing major ground in since 2006. Dinosaurs are also a popular theme in Japan, being represented in various mediums for practically a century.

So... it was announced today that Yo-Kai Watch 2: Great King Enma and the Five Stories, Nyan! will be released on December 19th. And guess what's also being release that weekend? Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Yo-Kai Watch versus Star Wars on the same weekend.

The first Yo-Kai Watch film set the all-time opening weekend for a domestic film, and was less than 2,000 admissions shy of setting the all-time opening weekend for any film (behind only The Matrix Reloaded). And the last Star Wars film was, of course, no slouch at the box office either. It still has the 5th biggest weekend of all-time (1st in USD) and 8th in admissions.

Advance tickets for Yo-Kai Watch 2 go on sale on July 25th.

It's hard to say. The second and third films were box office juggernauts, while Salvation saw a huge decline (-60/70%). But with Arnold back, maybe it'll see a rebound? I'm going to doubt it, however, and I expect a box office similar to Salvation's.

If it doesn't have an impressive opening weekend, it's unlikely to do well. There is A LOT of competition this July/August, and theaters certainly won't keep it playing on a sufficient amount of screens for long if it disappoints early on. It's already going to suffer a bit in the seating/screen department since it opens against The Boy and the Beast, which will be given top priority over it everywhere.

So, for the first time in years, I'll be providing weekend actuals as opposed to the just the weekend ranking every week!

>Love Live! The School Idol Movie wasn't messing around in its debut weekend with the otaku fans coming out in groves, helping the film deliver the best opening weekend since April.

Playing on just 121 screens, the film sold 251,811 admissions resulting in an incredibly high avg. ticket price of ¥1,589. Over 30,000 of its weekend admissions came from a fan meeting event held at the Makuhai Messe convention center, where the film was also screened. The tickets for this event went for ¥2,800 (about 60% above the general admission fee at the average theater).

It's difficult to project films that are driven so much by a fanbase, but with the screenings being so packed due to the low screen count, there should be some significant spillover into this upcoming week causing legs to be somewhat decent. So for now, I expect a finish between ¥1.5-2.0 billion.

>Sea Town Diary comes in at a distant second place, but still posted a respectable debut weekend. Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest film sold 181,642 admissions over the weekend on 323 screens.

The film's reception appears pretty strong and without much competition until mid-July, I'm sure legs will turn out quite strong that a total above ¥1.5 billion shouldn't be too difficult to achieve.

>Biri Gal became the third live-action film this year to exceed the ¥2.5 billion milestone, and also exceeded 2 million admissions over the weekend, too.

>Initiation Love broke the ¥1 billion milestone, giving Toho another successful film for the year. If their Summer/Fall slate delivers like the Winter/Fall slate, they could be in for a record year.

>The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 has already fallen out of the Top 10 after debuting in seventh place last weekend. And without any immediate holiday support, it's very likely to earn less than its predecessor. It took months for Kadokawa to pick the film up for release after Catching Fire bombed in similar fashion, so I wonder if they'll take the risk of picking up the final film next year.
