Re: Japan Box-Office: Sekai no Owari X Attack on Titan
SEKAI NO OWARI to Perform Theme Songs for "Attack on Titan" Live-Action Films in English
Quote:
It is confirmed today that four-member Japanese rock band SEKAI NO OWARI provides theme songs for the upcoming two-part live-action film adaptations based on Hajime Isayama's hugely successful manga series Attack on Titan. While the name of the band literally means "The End of the World" in Japanese, the second film is also titled as Attack on Titan: End of the World.
The theme song for the first part is "ANTI-HERO", and the band has already finished its recording with American hip hop producer Dan the Automator, well-known for his works for Gorillaz and KASABIAN, in the US. Its CD single will be released on July 29. The second part's theme song is "SOS," and Sigur Ros' producer Ken Thomas is expected to support the recording. Considering the films' international releases, both songs are sung in English.
The first part of the Shinji Higuchi-directed films, titled Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan, will open in Japan on August 1, then the second part Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan: End of the World will follow on September 19.
Sekai no Owari have become quite big in Japan, so this is just even more exposure for the upcoming Attack on Titan films. Their second album was released back in January, and sold almost 250,000 copies in its first week and should sell more than 500,000 by year's end (could be a Top 5 album of 2015).

I saw a pretty lame teaser for Attack on Titan (with hints of cool action) in my Tomorrowland screening.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Upcoming Release Schedule (Extended)
On the mimorin blog, on the daily rankings next to the amount of tickets sold there's a percentage figure.
For Cinderella it days 68.7%, for DBZ it says 35%, for Conan it says 53.4%. What is that percentage supposed to be?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Usual Locations - Seating/Showtimes
Usual Locations Seating/Showtimes [43% of Market]
Saturday, 05/30 #Seats (% change), [#theaters/#showings] - Film (Week of Release) 248,900 (-) [140/721] - Shinjuku Swan (NEW) 141,995 (-09%), [144/598] - Cinderella (Week 6) 141,209 (-45%), [134/685] - Initiation Love (Week 2) 100,469 (+04%), [132/495] - Biri Gal (Week 5) 98,839 (-33%), [142/603] - The Maze Runner (Week 2) 82,426 (-50%), [128/507] - Chappie (Week 2) 77,966 (-), [140/379] - Till Death Do Us What!? (NEW) 74,144 (-27%), [135/450] - Kakekomi (Week 3) 55,329 (-10%), [139/381] - Poison Berry in My Head (Week 4) 41,426 (-25%), [137/274] - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Week 7) 34,598 (-19%), [136/202] - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Week 7) 34,501 (+01%), [133/189] - Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! (Week 7) 32,710 (-22%), [141/214] - Parasyte (Part 2) (Week 6) 32,665 (-31%), [91/218] - Run All Night (Week 3) 22,325 (-), [30/130] - Pitch Perfect (NEW) 21,457 (+01%), [133/134] - Chateau de la Reine (Week 6) 21,007 (-25%), [106/144] - Furious 7 (Week 8) 20,453 (-), [14/66] - Haiyore! Nyaruko-san F (NEW) 19,942 (-), [25/123] - A Walk Among the Tombstones (NEW) 16,824 (-41%), [22/96] - Initial D the Movie Legend 2 (Week 2) 16,027 (-13%), [80/93] - Focus (Week 5) 12,995 (-33%), [79/86] - Z Island (Week 3) 12,269 (-54%), [40/88] - Bakabon the Genius: Dog of Flanders Revives (Week 2) 11,526 (-), [15/66] - Get on Up (NEW)
Very nice counts for Shinjuku Swan, but can it end Cinderella's reign atop the box office? I'm leaning towards "NO" right now.
Biri Gal is also gaining some bigger screens, and with the way it's been holding, I don't think it can be ruled out as a #1 contender this weekend. It's a long shot but if it does happen, it'll probably be the first time a film has ever rose to #1 in its 5th weekend of release without debuting at #1.
And note again, that the Pitch Perfect film that's opening this weekend is the original!

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (05/30-31)
Weekend Forecast (05/30-31)
01 (--) ¥220 million ($1.8 million), 0, ¥220 million ($1.8 million), Shinjuku Swan (Sony) NEW 02 (01) ¥197 million ($1.6 million), -20%, ¥4.95 billion ($40.7 million), Cinderella (Disney) Week 6 03 (03) ¥139 million ($1.1 million), -14%, ¥2.16 billion ($18.0 million), Biri Gal (Toho) Week 5 04 (02) ¥131 million ($1.1 million), -35%, ¥500 million ($4.1 million), Initiation Love (Toho) Week 2 05 (04) ¥88 million ($710,000), -41%, ¥390 million ($3.2 million), The Maze Runner (Fox) Week 2 06 (05) ¥74 million ($595,000), -29%, ¥620 million ($5.1 million), Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (06) ¥55 million ($445,000), -34%, ¥4.24 billion ($35.4 million), Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) Week 7 08 (--) ¥50 million ($405,000), 0, ¥50 million ($405,000), Till Death Do Us What!? (Showgate) NEW 09 (07) ¥46 million ($370,000), -45%, ¥200 million ($1.6 million), Chappie (Sony) Week 2 10 (09) ¥45 million ($360,000), -27%, ¥605 million ($5.0 million), Poison Berry in My Brain (Toho) Week 4 11 (08) ¥40 million ($320,000), -35%, ¥2.07 billion ($17.2 million), Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Attack! (Toho) Week 7 12 (11) ¥36 million ($290,000), -39%, ¥3.59 billion ($29.9 million), Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) Week 7
I'm going to predict that Shinjuku Swan finally manages to dethrone Cinderella this weekend, though it's likely to be a close race. The pre-sales for Shinjuku Swan are slightly better than those of last weekend's Initiation Love which suggests an opening of ¥200 million is likely.
Pitch Perfect was finally picked up for release in Japan 3 years later... but it's a limited release (34 theaters) and didn't do well yesterday so it has no shot at making the Top 10, or even the Top 15, honestly.
Also, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san F is a limited release playing in just 16 theaters this weekend, but it could still make the Top 10. Its pre-sales are solid, but it looks like it'll need to break at least ¥40 million and that'll be a bit difficult.

Basically, but the sequel doesn't have a distributor yet (meaning a very late 2015 release is the earliest it'll even be released), so... I don't know the plan exactly.
It seems more to me like they were testing how well the sequel might do by finally releasing the original, so the sequel may not receive a theatrical release given how poorly the original is performing so far.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (05/30-31)
Another notable earthquake (7.8) struck south of Japan's mainland an hour ago, but no accounts of damage have been reported, and no tsunami warnings have been announced. Thankfully it struck very deep undersea, 660km (400+ miles), otherwise there would have been some problems.
Anyway, today's earthquake shook Japan for about a minute (versus the usual 5-10 seconds that the 4/5 earthquakes do almost daily) and briefly halted subways and such, so nightly box office business will probably be a bit stunned.
Japan, of course, receives many earthquakes but there have been a dozen measuring around 5 in the past week with today's being the biggest so far... hopefully this isn't a harbinger of a larger one to come.

Hmm ¥3.59 billion, I suppose ¥3.7 billion would be out of the question now as it'll probably lose most of it's theatres soon.

Pretty decent for Shinjuku Swan. Its first day is about 10% stronger than Initiation Love's from last Saturday, so as long as it plays well tomorrow it'll be the film to dethrone Cinderella afterall.
And speaking of Initiation Love, a sub-20% drop from its opening day is pretty incredible. Cinderella and Biri Gal having stellar holds has become the norm, but this one is a bit surprising.

We had quite a strong weekend this week, especially for this time of year.
Shinjuku Swan almost definitely takes the #1 spot away from Cinderella, which has spent 5-consecutive weeks atop the box-office. There's a little room for the latter to still claim the #1 spot, if it played very well at Aeon Cinemas, but it's not very likely.
This is a notable victory for Sony, too, who hasn't had a film debut at #1 since... I think Resident Evil: Retribution in 2012 (I'll do some research later).
And this was a very good weekend for films targeting a female audience. Usually films that skew female play better during the weekdays than over the weekends, but all the female skewing films held very well this weekend. And Initiation Love's sub-20% second weekend drop is particularly very strong.

>Shinjuku Swan appears to have comfortably debuted at #1, which if actuals agree tomorrow, will indeed be Sony's first #1 film since Resident Evil: Retribution from 3 years ago! This should also give them their first, and maybe only, ¥1 billion (~$10 million) earner this year. Sony's had it rough for several years now.
>Cinderella looks to have been dethroned after spending 5-consecutive weeks atop the box-office, but it's still holding very well and could still approach ¥6 billion (~$50 million). That's going to be a hard figure to beat for any other live-action film this year. The only real candidate is probably Hero 2, followed by maybe Jurassic World or Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.
>Biri Gal does it again, and if it contines these crazy weekly holds it could be aiming for a multiplier of 10+ (decidedly difficult for a May release). It's on track for nearly ¥3 billion (~$25 million)!

Re: Japan Box Office: Walt Disney Picture's Top Films
Indeed. Disney has always been popular but since 2010 they've been doing exceptionally well, especially in the last couple years.
Last year, Frozen and Maleficent occupied the Top 2 positions for highest-grossing imported films, and it's very likely Disney will achieve that again this year with Big Hero 6 and Cinderella. Hell, if Inside Out does well (and it very likely will), Disney could have the Top 3 imported films of 2015 in Japan.
Walt Disney Picture's Top Grossing Films (1980-)
01. ¥25.48 billion ($249.6 million) / 20.03 million - Frozen (2014) #3 All-Time 02. ¥11.80 billion ($142.8 million) / 7.30 million - Alice in Wonderland (2010) #18 All-Time 03. ¥11.00 billion ($102.4 million) / 8.60 million - Finding Nemo (2003) #19 All-Time 04. ¥10.90 billion ($102.4 million) / 8.40 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) #23 All-Time 05. ¥10.80 billion ($130.7 million) / 7.20 million - Toy Story 3 (2010) #24 All-Time 06. ¥10.02 billion ($82.3 million) / 7.75 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) #28 All-Time 07. ¥9.37 billion ($76.8 million) / 7.60 million - Monsters, Inc. (2002) #36 All-Time 08. ¥9.15 billion ($77.6 million) / 7.19 million - Big Hero 6 (2014) #41 All-Time 09. ¥8.96 billion ($91.3 million) / 7.05 million - Monsters University (2013) #45 All-Time 10. ¥8.87 billion ($114.9 million) / 5.86 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) #46 All-Time 11. ¥6.86 billion ($56.4 million) / 5.60 million - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (2006) #78 All-Time 12. ¥6.80 billion ($60.3 million) / 5.10 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) #80 All-Time 13. ¥6.53 billion ($63.5 million) / 4.98 million - Maleficent (2014) #84 All-Time 14. ¥5.26 billion ($51.1 million) / 4.40 million - The Incredibles (2004) 15. ¥5.00 billion ($60.5 million) / 3.80 million - Up (2009) 16. ¥4.94 billion ($40.7 million) / 3.88 million - Cinderella (2015) [6 Weeks in Release] *Est* 17. ¥4.90 billion ($40.2 million) / 3.95 million - Dinosaur (2001) 18. ¥4.25 billion ($37.2 million) / 3.50 million - Aladdin (1993) 19. ¥4.00 billion ($44.2 million) / 3.20 million - Wall-E (2008)
Cinderella will overtake The Incredibles by possibly next Sunday, but it'll fall comfortably short of Maleficent (admissions may only be <500,000 lower, though).

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (05/30-31)
Here's the latest trailer for Mamaru Hosoda and Studio Chuzu's upcoming film, The Boy and the Beast:
This is going to be big, really big. There's a strong likelihood that it'll achieve uber-blockbuster status (¥10 billion+). It has so much going for it.
>Mamoru Hosoda/Studio Chuzu are considered the new Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. >Hosoda's successor to his previous three Best Animated Prize Winners. >Hosoda's last three films have have each more than doubled the box office of their predecessor (reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki's three films before Princess Mononoke broke the all-time record in 1997). >NTV will broadcast those three films during the three weekends leading up to its release. >Prime release date (July 11) just before Summer Vacation. >Mr. Children providing the theme song provides additional exposure. They're the 4th biggest musical act of all-time in Japan (nearly 60 million albums sold), and all of their singles have gone #1 since 1994.
And to expand on point one, now with Studio Ghibli likely finished (closing their film production department last year) audiences are going to even more accepting of Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chuzu than they already have been.

Her name is Erika Sawajiri. She hasn't done many films as of late, but her performances are generally well-received. So she's got the looks and the acting chops.

Weekend Ranking (05/30-31)
01 (--) Shinjuku Swan (Sony) DEBUT 02 (01) Cinderella (Disney) Week 6 03 (02) Initiation Love (Toho) Week 2 04 (03) Biri Gal (Toho) Week 5 05 (04) The Maze Runner (Fox) Week 2 06 (05) Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (06) Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) Week 7 08 (08) Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Attack! (Toho) Week 7 09 (07) Chappie (Sony) Week 2 10 (09) Poison Berry in My Head (Toho) Week 4
>Shinjuku Swan, based on the 2005 manga, tops the weekend box office this week ending Cinderella's five week run at #1.
The Sony release earned ¥252,324,500 ($2.1 million) with 175,337 admissions across 320 screens over the weekend. The debut itself is decent, but more importantly, this is Sony's first Japanese film to ever debut at #1 and their first film since 2012's Resident Evil: Retribution to top the weekend box office, too!
The debut is good enough to guarantee a gross above the ¥1 billion milestone, and it should be aiming for ¥1.2/1.3 billion.
>Cinderella slips to #2 in its sixth weekend of release, but with a box office exceeding ¥4.9 billion ($40 million) and 3.9 million admissions after six weeks, it's hardly disappointing. It may not be announced, but it definitely broke the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone on Monday, too. Disney's latest should finish between ¥5.5-6.0 billion (~$50 million).
>Initiation Love fell a very impressive 16% in its second weekend, earning ¥172 million ($1.4 million) with 122,715 admissions in its second week of release. That brings its two week total up to ¥590 million ($1.8 million) with 430,000 admissions.
>Biri Gal also pulled off an incredible hold in its fifth weekend of release, but that's pretty much expected at this point. The film earned ¥150 million ($1.2 million) with 120,451 admissions over the weekend, down a mere 9% from last weekend, bringing its five week total above ¥2.1 billion ($18 million) and 1.7 million admissions.
