 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
Apparently a lot of people are undecided on this weekend's openers given the range of predictions...hmm. Any tracking numbers before the release?

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
I remember Deep Impact being such a boring, melodramatic excuse of a disaster movie, but I understand it was pretty successful back in the day. I was always more of a fan of movies like Twister and Dante's Peak as a kid and I can even have some schlocky B movie fun with Volcano 1997 no matter how bad of a movie it may be. Also, no modern, blockbuster, disaster movies will ever replicate the global success of beasts like TDAT or 2012. Those days are pretty much over.

Is Deep Impact the film in which a subplot involves a female politician being brought down by scandals? I have vague memories.

Do you mean The Contender with Joan Allen and Gary Oldman?

Spielberg decided he wanted a film that was very different to Twister (also produced by the Beard) so he demanded the original script be changed to ensure it was more about how humanity would react in such a scenario as opposed to the physical destruction elements. Mimi Leader then reinforced this aspect. The film ended up steeling some of Armageddon's thunder and out opening it for that matter. Luckily for Disney, Armageddon developed impressive legs saving it from humiliation.

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
When was the last time a successful romance film focused on a man choosing between two women? I can't even remember. It seems like it is all about the girl choosing between two dudes nowadays, or a guy choosing a woman over his career/passion/vice. I should have seen this earlier and not gone so high in MGs game. Once again we were all deluded by the perception of male starpower, and once again it will turn out to mean nothing.

For all the starpower Aloha has, nobody seems to care about it. Hoping it can still do low double digits.

That's the opinion of "bullish analysts" - Fandango just says it's their top seller this week, which is no surprise.

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
So reviews for San Andreas are actually pretty decent atleast in comparison to other disaster films. Online signs seem to be pointing towards an opening similar to Get Hard and who knows it could go higher with it being more audience friendly. Aloha looks DOA though, and I wouldn't be surprised if it opened under $10M at this point.

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
Boxoffice.com is predicting 37 million for SA. Reviews are mixed but that is a good sign for this kind of movie. Better reviews then 2012 and Day after tomorrow.

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
So this should be able to get to $35m which would be decent. $40m is needed for it to ensure $100m though. This does seem like heavier more serious fare which should work well for it considering its surrounded by light hearted summer films all round (bar Max).

 Re: May 29-31 Predictions
San Andreas is at 16% on MT and it should be well over 20 by tomorrow if not surely on Friday. I really don't see it going under $30M now and it definitely has a shot a $40M.

MT is MetaCritic? Shouldn't it be MC?
Or is there a site called MetaTomatoes that you're referring to?

It's a shame it's likely not very good with that cast. It's also nuts to think it might actually totally flop. I'm hoping it doesn't suck and that it doesn't flop. I guess we'll find out.
