I think City of God is a good movie, but definitely overrated. I mean it sits at the 19th spot of IMDB's TOP 250. It is good, but not THAT good.

Why isn't it THAT good?

Unlike Downfall, it actually involves the audience EMOTIONALLY.

Certainly it is better than movies like American Beauty, Fight Club, Spirited Away, Memento, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Pianist.

I think it is better than some of those.

Now, it certaintly isn't in MY top 20, but IMDB is always strange. It's not overrated. Thing is - some movies are hated more than others (let's be honest. people are probably giving Raiders, Memento, Spirited Away, and Fight Club 1s without even having seen them) and no one really objects to City of God or votes against it.

It'll drop just like many modern movies that rise high and then drop. FOTR was replaced in the TOP 10 by Cuckoo's nest and Eternal Sunshine started falling as well.

American Beauty was even No. 1 for a while when it first came out, then it steadily fell off. It's understandable, because once it reaches that high ranking, there will be backlash. CTHD was in the top 20 during its oscar run. However, American Beauty is the only film I can remember to ever replace Godfather as No. 1 all-time for that short while, and if ROTK can't, I don't see a film challenging Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption for the top 2 spots at IMDb in the foreseeable future.

Wow, I never knew that American Beauty was #1 for a while... Not a bad pick, I'd say. Out of the entire TOP 10 the only movie I really have problems with being there is Pulp Fiction.

I'd like to see Return of the King removed from the #3 slot. It was good, but really not worth that high of a ranking.

If it was up to me, ROTK would be ahead of Shawshank's Redemptions. And so would be other movies on the list. I think Shawshank is a good Hollywood fairy tale, but not a masterpiece.

Titanic was no. 1 of the imdb list when it was released.

My number one choice is definitely Kung-Fu Hustle, followed by City of God.

I heard that before as well. I could see that happening since IMDb and the whole Internet were still at their early stages back in 1997-1998. As there have been a lot more reviews for the top movies, it should be much harder for a new movie to crack the top 10 list now.
