Nah if you combine cinematography and set piece designs, Mad Max wins out. The Raid films are still great but sometimes hindered by fights looking way too choreagraphed

I used The Raids as examples, since they are my favorite, but there are plenty of other movies that have just as crazy, if not crazier action scenes. Mad Max's are just done really really well and the destruction is beautiful. I just wanted the entire movie to be like that. I wanted something that I hadn't seen before.

 Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
Very good. Maybe a bit overhyped, but very fun and entertaining. A lot of great action sequences with just enough over-the-top enjoyment thrown in with a nice soundtrack to go along with it all. B+
Max felt supporting to Furiosa from my perspective of the film, which was fine by me. Her character was a lot more interesting and the only one I cared for during the film. I haven't seen any of the previous films, so maybe the flashbacks of Max's daughter connected more with those moviegoers, but there was very little given for me to really care about that or him too much. I'm glad most of the girls survived, but they weren't exactly memorable by any means.

 Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
After laying dormant for 30 years, the Mad Max franchise is revived and reinvigorated in a glorious fashion by its creator, writer and director George Miller. A type of psychedelic post-apocalyptic Western, the storyline finds the title antihero, still traveling the Australian wasteland and now played by a magnetic and terse Tom Hardy, involved in a dangerous and elaborate chase through the desert: an ailing, but still bloodthirsty tyrant (Hugh Keays-Byrne, perhaps even creepier here than as the unrelated Toecutter character in the first film) is pursuing a rebellious female war chief (a fearsome, lithe, and entirely scene-stealing Charlize Theron) who has freed his prized sex slaves and fled with them to a presumed refuge where there is still "green." As always, Max becomes a brooding and reluctant champion for the underdog, helping the women evade their pursuers. The best compliment one can pay Mad Max: Fury Road is to say it is rather insane, particularly as a piece of ultra-big-budget summertime entertainment distributed by a top studio. It conjures an atmospheric, brutal, and supremely intricate world of diseased men and machine fetishism without tightly holding our hand; much is revealed or implied in motion, in the present tense, without softening or compromise. Miller's respect for the audience's intelligence and imagination is near inspiring. Indeed, the mythology, the sheer amount of invention on display, is vast, yet the storyline is crisp, simple, and involving in the most elemental, old-school way. And the plentiful action sequences (the cars! the stunts! the palpable sense of heat and pain!) hit as hard as any fan could hope for; each is defined by spacial clarity and a productive coupling of emotional resonance and see-what-I-can-do spectacle writ large, primarily with practical F/X with, of course, a healthy digital assist.

 Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
While Furiosa is a fascinating character and in many ways the heart of the film, Tom Hardy still shines as Max. I disagree with anyone saying otherwise. So many great small moments, such as the subtle thumbs up or the arrow through the hand. Or wonderful beats in tandem with Furiosa, such as allowing her to shoot the gun over his shoulder. I instantly invested in him as Max. And Hardy is just such a talented actor. He exudes grit and instinctive intensity and cannot help but command the screen even when dialed down. No one in movies today has more expressive guttural sounds. The film does not need to bend itself into a pretzel to massage his ego and constantly underline a hard-man/superman image (see: Vin Diesel in the Furious franchise). He has an effortless air of tenacity and masculinity. Oh, and I found the antagonist, Immortan Joe, extremely menacing. He is scarier than most horror-film heavies, from the booming voice to the unruly white hair to the skull-grin faceplate to the Darth Vader-esque breathing apparatus. It is not hard to believe he is a tyrannical warlord masquerading with success as a god. And it is neat he is played by the same actor as the first film's Toecutter.

Your reviews are always well written but I love how you put this. Definitely in agreement here. Still haven't decided about a grade..... Do I think this might be slightly over-hyped? Yes. Is Charlize a little bit over-rated here? I think so. Is this movie still balls-to-the-wall nutso insanely awesome? Quite possibly. Leaning towards an A-

 Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
The newest Mad Max installment is great. I didn't think it was going to be through the first part of the movie. It starts of very cool, with how Max is introduced, and we get a good idea what this post-apocalyptic world looks like. But Max is quite early on, not really himself yet, and so I wasn't sure yet how I was going to feel about this developing story-line either. In the beginning I felt the focus was also too much on the effects, the electric storm phase was a visual spectacle, just I don't care too much for it.
Charlize Theron really is amazing as Furiosa, killing it in every scene. She has a compelling back story and goal in mind that's interesting to follow. Hardy is also a great Max, and even not as central to the story as Gibson's was, he does all the right things to fit in. Especially when he takes charge to go back to the Citadel, and from then onward I believed in his character. The girl entourage is central to the plot of the movie, and their purpose of being there is well explained. Aside from Zoe Kravitz they are all well cast. Zoe just doesn't seem to fit the super model bill, and her acting feels the most wooden of everyone in the movie.
The action is great in this movie, but by no means would I call it an action movie, or the greatest action movie ever. It's a dramatic, adventure epic for me, that has pretty much all you want a movie to engage you with. Great leads, amazing set-pieces and cinematography, mesmerizing music, and lovely story telling. I enjoyed how we are put from scene to scene with with the screen cuts if I'm naming that right.
It's been since Saturday when I've seen it, and I haven't been able to get the movie out of my mind yet, making me look forward to having the opportunity to see it again soon.

 Re: Mad Max: Fury Road
I fucking loved every minute of this. The action is pretty spectacular and puts any of the previous blockbusters this year to shame, especially Furious 7. It's honestly probably some of the best BIG budget action to ever grace the screen in a longtime, although nothing comes close to topping that first chase/sandstorm sequence in the beginning. Charlize Theron and Nicolas Hoult steal the show, but I thought Hardy also held his own aswell. He plays that mysterious/quiet badass really well and I thought he had quite a few moments to shine. Oh, and the guitar guy was EPIC!

And sorry David, but Prometheus belongs in the list of worst summer blockbusters.

So.....I liked it a lot, but I wish I had seen it before the big hype. I wiuldn't say I was let down, I just wasn't blown away.
And I don't get the "non-stop action" sentiment. It has plenty of quieter moments.
