 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7
Budgets are rarely reported, but few films receive a budget of ¥1 billion ($8/9 million) or greater, so $5 million doesn't seem farfetched. If I find anything about it, I'll let you know. Weekend actuals: ¥960,586,350 ($8.1 million) / 715,727 [653 screens] - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F ¥874,762,300 ($7.4 million) / 688,623 [349 screens] - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno ¥548,347,100 ($4.6 million) / 385,428 [640 screens] - Furious 7 ¥389,405,800 ($3.3 million) / 329,977 [339 screens] - Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! Crazy weekend! It looks like a mid-July weekend. All the openers set franchise record opening weekends, as well as various other records that I'll mention later today. And with all the openers improving upon estimates, and with the holdovers unlikely to change much from estimates, this weekend should be either the 6th or 7th biggest of all-time now! And depending on where it lands once the holdover numbers are in, it might be the biggest non-July weekend of all-time, too! I'll post a full Weekend Ranking update this evening, just wanted to share the craziness of this weekend early.

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
Monday sales according to that website
Conan - 30,545 DBZ - 28,372
Is that good or bad for DBZ?
Can we also work out what that relates to in gross based on the weekend actuals? DBZ made ¥960 million from that 43% ticket sales of 290,000.
So that'd mean Monday it made ¥94 million? Would that be accurate?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
On Box office.com a Monday estimate of ¥91 million was given with 69,000 admission s and that seems right with the ticket sales in the 43% share but...
Battle of Gods sold 988,000 tickets by it's 5th day.It sold 561,000 tickets opening weekend so thatd mean over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday it sold an average of 142,000 tickets per day.
Why is it so much more than RoF when that movie opened so much higher?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
It's pretty frontloaded as expected. It's already fallen behind Furious 7 at these chains.
@bullza : It was the second week of spring break. ROF will be on par or fall behind BOG in a few days but it will have Golden Week soon where as BOG didn't have anything later in its run.

Oh I see, so it's going to lose ground to BoG over the next week days but then gain on it again afterward?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
Yep. Basically it will regain ground during Golden Week (from the 29th of april to the 5th of may), if not as soon as next monday since spring break ended when BOG was in the 10th day of its run.

It's still ultimately going to end up making a lot more than BoG in Japan right?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
Its opening was 40.5% higher than BOG so if it has BOG's legs which were poor it will finish at 4.2 billion yen. With Golden Week it should have better legs so I think a 4.5 billion yen finish is more likely. That would be about 50% more than BOG : do you consider that 'a lot more' ?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
I'd consider ¥4 billion a lot more let alone ¥4.5 billion.
It did open to like 40% but is that really an apples to apples comparison if BoG opened during spring vacation and people had the option of just waiting till Monday to see it instead.
Simply put had it not been spring vacation would BoG have opened to more than it actually did?

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Acuals (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
Cynosure has responded well to all these recent questions. The only one I see unanswered is if the last DBZ film would have opened more if it wasn't released during Spring Break. Probably not since it has a large fanbase, and there was a rush factor there to see the first DBZ film in I think 17 years, too. Anyone waiting until later to see the film due to the holiday week would have been quite insignificant. I think this might be more discussion than Frozen brought to this thread last year. Full Weekend Ranking coming up soon.

 Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (DBZ/Conan/Furious 7)
Weekend Ranking (04/18-19) 01 (--) Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) DEBUT 02 (--) Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) DEBUT 03 (--) Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) DEBUT 04 (--) Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! (Toho) DEBUT 05 (02) Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 5 06 (01) Solomon's Perjury (Part 2) (Shochiku) Week 2 07 (03) April Fools (Toho) Week 3 08 (04) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 7 09 (06) Birdman (Fox) Week 2 10 (07) Into the Woods (Disney) Week 6
This weekend was expected to be big, even one of the biggest of 2015, but it more than exceeded those expectations. The Top 10 combined for ¥3.129 billion, making it the 7th biggest weekend of all-time, and the 2nd biggest non-Summer weekend of all-time!
>Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F lead the pack with an astonishing debut. The film opened on 653 screens, a new record for a domestic film thanks to being the first ever domestic IMAX 3D release, opening to nearly ¥1 billion over the weekend.
The latest entry (film #18) in the Dragon Ball franchise, grossed a massive ¥960,586,350 ($8.1 million) with 715,727 admissions over the weekend. It's opening achieved: A new franchise record, by a considerable margin; a spot among the Top 10 biggest animated openings of all-time (#10), and the 2nd biggest opening weekend of all-time for the month of April, behind just Alice in Wonderland.
Any film released for the remainder of the year is going to have a very hard time beating this debut. Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F is likely to be frontloaded, but look for it to finish somewhere between ¥4-4.5 billion ($35-40 million).
>Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno is only the 4th film in the 18 film franchise to lose over its opening weekend, but it wasn't by any means disappointing, far from it.
The latest Detective Conan release earned an incredible ¥874,762,300 ($7.4 million) with 688,623 admissions across 349 screens, setting a new franchise record which was just broken last year. It's opening weekend also achieved: The all-time highest opening weekend for a film not to debut at #1; the 14th biggest opening weekend for an animated film; and the 3rd biggest opening weekend of all-time for the month of April.
It's also going to be difficult for any film released for the remainder of the year to beat this debut as well. Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno is likely to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, aiming for a ¥4.5 billion ($40 million) total.
>Furious 7 comes in at #3, and managed something in Japan that hasn't occurred anywhere else in the world - it didn't debut at #1.
However, that means very little considering it outopened Fast and Furious 6 by a strong 23%, grossing ¥548,347,100 ($4.6 million) with 385,428 admissions across 640 screens. By comparison, its opening weekend if a far cry from Dragon Ball Z and Detective Conan, but it's still very, very impressive.
It'll have no problem becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise, and should be targeting a ¥3 billion ($25 million) total.
>Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! rounds out the debuts at #4, and just like the top 3 openers ahead of it, achieved a new franchise record opening weekend.
The 23rd film in the franchise grossed ¥389,405,800 ($3.3 million) with 329,977 admissions on 339 screens over the weekend.
This franchise always opens with Detective Conan over this weekend every year, playing a very distant debut partner, but its box-office has been growing and it's becoming quite a successful franchise. Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! will also become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, aiming for a ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) total.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
Why is Yokai Watch included in 2015 when it was released December 2014? Is that just the way they do things?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) begin the box-office year at the start of December each year.
All December releases are counted as next year's releases, and sometimes late November releases are, too, depending on how much they earn in December.
Pretty much everything begin their years in late November or at the start of December in Japan, from the Music Industry, Manga/Book Sales, Home Media Sales (DVDs, Rentals), etc. are all tracked this way. The Japan Academy Awards also begin their cutoff on eligible films in late November every year.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
I see then, thanks for clearing it up. So did DBZ have a higher opening weekend than any film in 2014 then?
Kenshin had the highest opening in 2014 with ¥914 million or something like that right?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
In the Top Opening Weekends of 2015 list I posted above, I also have the Top Opening Weekends of 2014 below that in spoiler tags.
Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F beat Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends by gross, but was just shy in admissions (2,221).

Ah I see it, so besides Yokai Watch what was the last movie to make that much money then on opening weekend?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (7th All-Time Weekend)
And that was the middle of 2013 too.
The presales for DBZ and Conan today were much lower than they were yesterday, only about 58-59% of what they were yesterday. Is that normal? That seems really bad.
