Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Spring Break (Spring BO Season)
I'm not going to post a Weekend Forecast this week, but I will post Weekend Estimates.

Weekend drops will be very good. Most films should have sub-20/30% holds, with family films possibly seeing weekend increases (though that's mainly applying to just Doraemon this year).

Since it's Spring Break, all the major films have already opened to take advantage of the holiday frame, with the only wide release this weekend being Jupiter Ascending, which is only the 6th widest release this weekend (behind last weekend's top 5). Needless to say, it's not going to do very well (a debut outside the Top 5 is pretty much assured).

Weekend Estimates (03/28-29)

01 (02) ¥284 million ($2.4 million), -13%, ¥2.49 billion ($20.8 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 4
02 (01) ¥259 million ($2.2 million), -37%, ¥1.16 billion ($9.7 million), Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 2
03 (04) ¥179 million ($1.5 million), -31%, ¥775 million ($6.5 million), Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) Week 2
04 (03) ¥171 million ($1.4 million), -35%, ¥1.59 billion ($13.3 million), Into the Woods (Disney) Week 3
05 (05) ¥152 million ($1.3 million), -23%, ¥1.44 billion ($12.0 million), Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 3
06 (--) ¥105 million ($880,000), 0, ¥105 million ($880,000), Jupiter Ascending (Warner Bros.) NEW
07 (06) ¥88 million ($740,000), -53%, ¥360 million ($3.0 million), Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 2
08 (07) ¥79 million ($660,000), -09%, ¥555 million ($4.6 million), The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 3
09 (08) ¥60 million ($505,000), -23%, ¥380 million ($3.2 million), Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) Week 3
10 (09) ¥41 million ($340,000), -48%, ¥2.06 billion ($17.4 million), American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 6
11 (10) ¥35 million ($295,000), -37%, ¥545 million ($4.5 million), Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) (Shochiku) Week 4
12 (11) ¥29 million ($240,000), -13%, ¥245 million ($2.1 million), The Imitation Game (Gaga) Week 3

Good holds, though they're a bit weaker as a Top 10 than a few past years. This weekend is firmly in the middle of this year's Spring Break, so perhaps that was a factor.

>Doraemon looks to have reclaimed its spot atop the box-office, with what is currently the second strongest fourth weekend gross and second highest four week total in the franchise history.

>Assassination Classroom sees a bit of a heavy drop, but it's quite impressive coming off an opening weekend that was boosted by stage greetings. Normally, second weekend drops for films with stage greetings occurring on opening weekend drop over 40%. It should be safe to now proclaim that Assassination Classroom will become the second biggest film of Spring (March) 2015, behind Doraemon, and ahead of Into the Woods/Strobe Edge.

>Into the Woods is performing well, but its weekly drops haven't been too good. If it doesn't improve, then Strobe Edge stands a good chance of eventually overtaking its total.

>Jupiter Ascending disappoints as expected.

>And so much for Spring helping the Kamen Rider series. The franchise regularly drops around 50% over its second weekend, often registering the worse second weekend drops every year, and the release date change wasn't able to help there.

Weekend Ranking (03/28-29)

Image

01 (02) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 4
02 (01) Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 2
03 (04) Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) Week 2
04 (03) Into the Woods (Disney) Week 3
05 (05) Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 3
06 (--) Jupiter Ascending (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
07 (06) Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 2
08 (07) The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 3
09 (08) Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) Week 3
10 (09) American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 6

>Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes reclaimed the #1 spot over the weekend, dropping only 10% in its fourth weekend in release.

The latest film in the Doraemon fanchise grossed ¥309,586,900 ($2.6 million) with 267,559 admissions over the weekend, bringing its total to an impressive ¥2.55 billion ($21.2 million) and 2.26 million admissions after four weeks in release. This is the second best fourth weekend and the second highest four week total in the Doraemon franchise, so look for this year's film to earn near ¥4 billion ($35 million).

>Assassination Classroom falls to #2 after debuting atop the box-office last weekend, but it has already broke ¥1.2 billion ($10 million) and 1 million admissions after two weeks in release. A total over ¥2.5 billion ($20 million) is looking good, and maybe it can make a run at ¥3 billion ($25 million).

>Jupiter Ascending misses the Top 5 in its debut weekend, earning just ¥127,009,900 ($1.1 million) with 88,739 admissions across 469 screens. This one was expected to disappoint, so there's no surprise here. It'll end up with ¥500-600 million ($4.5 million).

>American Sniper is about to leave the Top 10, but not before it exceeded ¥2 billion ($17.5 million) and 1.6 million admissions after its sixth week in release.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Spring Break (Spring BO Season)
I've had a busy week (having to tutor this time of year is quite strenuous), but I'll be posting this weekend's estimates tomorrow as usual.

Spring Break ended on Thursday, with the new school year beginning just before the weekend. April is the beginning of the new school year in Japan.

The only wide opener this week was April Fools, starring over 25 popular Japanese actors, which debuted on Wednesday (April 1st). And having opened on a very inflated Wednesday, its weekend gross will be deflated and it's aiming for a 3rd or 4th place debut based on Saturday's estimates.

Doraemon is likely to repeat atop the box-office again, though Assassination Classroom remains a close #2.

Pretty strong post-Spring Break weekend. Overall, the Top 10 drops are better than the average post-Spring Break weekend.

>Doraemon and Assassination Classroom are pretty close at the top, with the latter actually winning at the usual locations in admissions and gross. However, Doraemon plays very well at Aeon Cinemas, so it's likely to stay on top in the national ranking.

Doraemon typically collapses after Spring Break, so I don't think it'll be the first film in the franchise to reach ¥4 billion, but it's going to come quite close.

Assassination Classroom is holding up much better than most films that receive stage greetings on opening weekend, and while it is likely due to Spring Break, it's still impressive. It'll exceed ¥2.5 billion ($20 million) with no problem now, though ¥3 billion ($25 million) may be too much to ask for after that.

>April Fools did okay, though its weekend is very deflated having opened on Wednesday. It's very, very rare for any film to open mid-week, but Toho was smart enough to take advantage of April 1st since that day alone accounted for nearly 1/3 of its 5-day ticket sales at the usual locations. It's probably not going to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.

>Into the Woods and Strobe Edge continue their close race after opening against each other. Into the Woods opened 28% higher, but its so-so weekly holds have allowed Strobe Edge to close the gap with its strong weekday numbers. Strobe Edge already pulled ahead in admissions last week, and may very well pass Into the Woods in gross by the end of their runs, too.

Weekend Ranking (04/04-05)

Image

01 (01) Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 5
02 (02) Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 3
03 (--) April Fools (Toho) DEBUT
04 (03) Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) Week 3
05 (05) Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 4
06 (04) Into the Woods (Disney) Week 4
07 (07) Super Hero Taisen: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 4
08 (08) The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 4
09 (06) Jupiter Ascending (Warner Bros.) Week 2
10 (--) A Farewell to Jinu (Kino Films) DEBUT

>Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes holds strong atop the box-office, achieving its 4th non-consecutive week at #1.

The latest in the franchise grossed ¥254,795,700 ($2.1 million) with 216,690 admissions in its fifth weekend, down just 18%, which brought its five-week total over ¥3.4 billion ($29 million) and 3 million admissions. I mentioned earlier that it's unlikely to become the first film in the franchise to reach ¥4 billion ($35 million), and thus the highest grossing film in the franchise as a result)... but it looks possible!

>Assassination Classroom continues to impress, maintaining its #2 position, and exceeded ¥2 billion ($17 million) and 1.8 million admissions after its third week in release.

Defying the general rule of a film collapsing if they have stage greetings occur during their opening weekend, the live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime is making a play at ¥3 billion ($25 million), a milestone that has become rather difficult to achieve for live-action films in recent years.

>April Fools, featuring a very large ensemble of actors, debuts in the #3 position, earning ¥160,385,200 ($1.3 million) with 116,407 admissions across 215 screens over the weekend. The debut is so-so, but it actually opened on Wednesday to take advantage of April Fools day itself, and its 5-day total broke ¥300 million ($2.6 million). It'll probably be slightly frontloaded, but reaching the ¥1 billion milestone may be doable.

>Strobe Edge has been besting Into the Woods over the weekdays, while losing over the weekends, but the Shoujo adaptation managed to edge ahead over the weekend this week.

After four weeks in release, it has grossed ¥1.93 billion ($16 million) with 1.65 million admissions. It'll exceed ¥2 billion any day, and stands a chance of being the highest-grossing Shoujo film since 2008's blockbuster, Boys Over Flowers.

>Into the Woods falls out of the Top 5, but exceeded ¥2 billion ($17 million) after its fourth week in release.

>A Farewell to Jinu rounds out the Top 10 with its debut, grossing ¥52,056,654 ($435,000) with 39,364 admissions on 133 screens. This is noticeably higher than estimates suggested, and it's the first film released through Kino Films that has made the Top 10 since 2013.

12 (10) ¥36 million ($300,000), -29%, ¥130 million ($1.1 million), A Farewell to Jinu (Kino Films) Week 2

The top spot looks to be up for grabs this weekend.

Doraemon is the most unlikely among the Top 4 to take it (which would give the film 5 non-consecutive weeks at #1) since it generally drops hard at this point in its release, but if Solomon's Perjury (Part 2) doesn't improve much on its predecessor's debut and Birdman doesn't breakout a bit, it still has a chance. Assassination Classroom can't be ruled out either, returning to the #1 spot after debuting there, and might even be the safest bet this weekend

Overall, though, this is a standard, boring post-Spring Break, start of the new School Year weekend. Things will quickly get interesting again next weekend, though, with what should be one of the biggest weekends of the year before Golden Week begins at the end of the month.

Usual Locations (~43% of Market) - Saturday Admissions (04/11)

Admissions (% change from last week), [#theaters/#showings], Film (Distributor) Week of Release
29,551 (--), [142/724], Solomon's Perjury (Part 2) (Shochiku) NEW
19,290 (-35%), [139/704], Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 4
18,713 (-13%), [118/591], April Fools (Toho) Week 2
15,945 (--), [93/492], Birdman (Fox) NEW
14,583 (-47%), [143/511], Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 6
12,106 (-30%), [144/592], Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb (Fox) Week 4
11,426 (-16%), [144/522], Into the Woods (Disney) Week 5
9,354 (-30%), [134/502], Strobe Edge (Toho) Week 5
5,452 (-35%), [124/417], Jupiter Ascending (Warner Bros.) Week 3
4,992 (-14%), [138/366], The Lion Who Stands in the Wind (Toho) Week 5
4,532 (-27%), [25/114], Persona 3 The Movie: No. 3, Falling Down (Aniplex) Week 2
4,323 (-30%), [134/272], Super Hero Taisen: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 4
3,989 (-36%), [71/264], A Farewell to Jinu (Kino Films) Week 2
3,407 (-32%), [56/119], The Imitation Game (Gaga) Week 5
2,831 (-14%), [8/41], Tamayura: Graduation Photos Part 1: Sprout (Shochiku Media Division) Week 2
2,663 (-43%), [131/157], Solomon's Perjury (Part 1) (Shochiku) Week 6
2,581 (-15%), [88/147], Pretty Cure All Stars: Spring Carnival (Toei) Week 5
2,524 (--), [18/88], Magic in the Moonlight (Long Ride) NEW
2,197 (--), [63/243], Thomas the Tank Engine: Tale of the Brave (Uplink) NEW
1,430 (+36%), [8/36], Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
1,401 (-51%), [61/74], American Sniper (Warner Bros.) Week 8
1,189 (--), [11/25], Geki x Cine Ashura-jo no Hitomi 2003 (T-Joy) NEW
936 (-35%), [35/46], The Theory of Everything (Gaga) Week 5
666 (-42%), [48/51], Shimajiro and the Big Tree (Toho Video Division) Week 5
589 (-29%), [21/29], Beyond the Boundary (Shochiku) Week 5

Solid for Solomon's Perjury (Part 2), and it's off to a sizable lead over the competition. So unless it sees an unusual significant drop on Sunday and allows Assassination Classroom and maybe Doraemon to catch up, it'll earn itself a #1 debut.

Birdman did alright, too, though 55% of its overall theater count is accounted for here so it'll still struggle to make the weekend Top 5.

April Fools held very, very well. I figured since it had a rare 5-day opening week, which was followed by solid weekdays this past week, that it wouldn't be much of a weekend film, but clearly it's proving otherwise.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (04/11-12)
Hi Corpse,

Just a few questions on the japanese BO :

-Are there any websites in Japan equivalent to Fandango or Movietickets who release their early ticket sales a few weeks before films are actually released ? For example I saw Deadline had an early tracking report for the Avengers based on these early sales.

-Is there any 'social tracking' for big movies prior to their release : number of tweets, of mentions etc. ?

I'm interested in having an early tracking for next weekend but I can't really find anything and I thought you might have a better idea.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (04/11-12)
Sounds like next weekend is interesting a lot of people, and it should definitely deliver. I'll provide a sufficient amount of previews during the week, too.

The only "social tracking" equivalent would be various movie sites' "check-in" system they utilize. It allows people to "check-in" to a movie they're interested in seeing or have already seen.

There are, of course, issues when using this to track and project movies' box-office, though, most notably:

>Hollywood films tend to have higher "check-in" numbers because they don't reach Japan until well after their release elsewhere. They receive a lot of exposure prior to their release, which really inflates their "check-in" status.

>Animated films rarely receive any notable "check-in" results. Kids and families are rarely on such movie sites, so trying to gauge an animated film's potential using this method is mostly impossible. Doraemon can have just a few hundred "check-in" numbers, while something like Jupiter Ascending can have a few thousand, and Doraemon will outgross Jupiter Ascending's entire box-office in 2 days for example.

The only time the "check-in" system can accurately be used to gauge potential box-office, is if the numbers are usually high/low for certain films.

However, the most accurate tracking method is simply to use real-time ticket sales. Japan has arranged seating (buy your ticket, choose your seat in advance), so you can see all ticket sales and available seats for any available showtime. Right now, I can go check how many tickets Birdman has sold for the 7PM showing for Wednesday at most major theater chains.

The usual locations admissions I post tracks the real-time ticket sales across 5 of the biggest movie chains (which represent almost 45% of the nation's total theaters/seats), and advance ticket sales for the weekend are also tracked and released shortly before the first showtimes begin.

Thank you for your answer.

Since both films I want to track are kind of the same kind : both animated, both shônen based...maybe the online check-ins while not being very useful for projections could at least provide a way to compare the two before any other kind of data is released.

I knew about the website which gives ticket sales for the 5 movie chains once the movies are released, but I didn't know you could check seats and ticket sales per showtime a few days before the release (and knowing very little japanese only makes searching harder). Looking forward to all the data you'll be providing in the upcoming week. :D

Detective Conan, Dragon Ball Z, Furious 7, and Crayon Shin-chan should combine for more than ¥2 billion next weekend.

As far as "check-ins" go, on Eiga.com, Detective Conan currently has 2,854 vs. Dragon Ball Z's 2,204.

The battle for the top spot will be tight between Detective Conan and Dragon Ball Z, and they'll easily have two of the biggest opening weekends of 2015.

This is traditionally Detective Conan's weekend, winning 15 of the last 18 years, but it's not an impervious franchise. It lost last year to Frozen (though it sold more tickets), 2010 to Alice in Wonderland, and in 2000 to The Green Mile.

Not many check-ins indeed. Still better than nothing.

I read that 'DBZ' will be having IMAX, 3D and 4D screenings and I don't think 'Detective Conan' has those so I could see a scenario similar to the one last year with Frozen happening.

Then of course it will be a matter of legs and based on the 2013 performances of both movies I think 'Detective Conan' will have better legs but then the last 'DBZ' movie wasn't released right before Golden Week which might have affected its legs.
