I haven't seen Boyhood or The Imitation Game yet, but I thought all the winners tonight were deserving.
It's a shame How to Train Your Dragon 2 couldn't pull off the final win here, but every Best Animated Feature nominee was excellent this year. They were definitely 5 of the most-varied, strongest contenders in the category ever.

Looks like Boyhood might not have even been in the top three with voters.

The top three are the biggest winners tonight. Keaton and Boyhood are the biggest losers, although neither were shocking leading up until tonight.

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
The biggest surprise for me tonight was Eddie Redmayne winning best actor over Keaton. I seriously thought he had that one locked up, especially after Birdman was getting so much love from earlier. I really need to try and finish watching The Theory of Everything one day. Glad to see JM win an award for best actress though. I haven't seen Still Alice yet, but I have heard nothing, but great things about it.

Redmayne winning this is laughable.

I cannot comprehend calling Redmayne "laughable." It is obviously a fine, nuanced, closely observed performance.

poor Michael Keaton. Both Redmayne and him were brilliant but Keaton is one of the true highlights of Birdman, shame.

After watching The Theory of Everything it makes perfect sense to me why Redmayne beat it, I don't think there are many Best Actor winners the last 15 years that would've beat Redmayne. Not that it is the perfect performance but it is just so Oscar winner made. Boyhood had to win something but with Birdman's strength I am surprised Stone didn't present a serious challenge to Arquette, I thought Stone was the standout performance of the two

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
It figures the one award I really wanted Birdman to win (Best Actor)...it didn't. And it won all the rest I didn't want it to.
The highlights of these awards were obv: -Whiplash's super strong showing and J.K. Simmons' deserved win -Patty Arquette's awesome speech and Meryl going to church along with it -"Glory" -Julianne Moore winning a long overdue Oscar
I thought NPH basically flopped and these were mostly a chore to get through.

If Boyhood wasn't in the picture Emma Stone probably would've been an Oscar winner tonight.
I love Birdman but I'm disappointed with Boyhood only winning 1. I guess the good thing is that if Boyhood won the backlash would be immense from the people who use the gimmick card.

12 Years a Slave and Birdman both came out on almost the exact same date. Watch out if Fox Searchlight releases anything in select cities on October 16th this year.

Only Still Alice will receive any type of Oscar box-office boost. Birdman, The Theory of Everything, and Boyhood are already on DVD and Blu-ray.

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
I probably got through the first 30 minutes of TTOE before I gave up on it, but I will say from what I saw Redmayne did seem to give the performance his all. Maybe he does deserve it more than Keaton, but considering I didn't love Birdman anyways I thought his performance was one off the biggest highlights of the movie for me.
Also, this is really going to inflate expectations for The Revenant. It will easily be the directors biggest hit ever with him coming off this sweep plus you got respected heavy hitters like Dicaprio and Hardy backing you up. I'm even more curious to see how critics will react if it even slightly fails to live up to the hype.

People used to give Alejandro González Iñárritu so much shit. He was always regarded as this self-styled, John Huston-lite poseur from Mexico whose films were too grim-faced and serious and solemn. I love 21 Grams and Biutiful, though.
