 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
This movie was absolutely ridiculous but I had a lot of fun with it. The actors don't take it too seriously and are clearly having a blast with the material, and it has more than a few well-crafted action sequences (namely one set in a Westboro Baptist Church knockoff that reaches Kill Bill levels of insanity with its violence). It's incredibly cartoonish and colorful, relatively fast-paced, and I would definitely be game for a sequel. B+

That last shot before the credits lol
Colin Firth's great, and the lead is pretty sexy. It's a very sleek and fun watch that doesn't take itself seriously. It's just a notch below something really special but it's pretty enjoyable.

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
Kingsman is about as much of a blast as one could expect between the concept, the cast, and Matthew Vaughn's involvement. Admittedly, the first half is a little slow and conventional, but once the action kicks into high gear, it's a gleefully violent and deliriously entertaining film that goes even more enjoyably over-the-top than even the loopiest segments of Vaughn's previous action-comedy, Kick-Ass. Without giving anything away, the set pieces are shot and choreographed with verve, disregard tastefulness, and don't skimp on violence in order to achieve a more accessible rating. In particular, the church scene that has been teased in the trailers is an absolute showstopper that scored applause from the audience I saw it with, and it's arguably worth the price of admission all on its own. No one will confuse Kingsman for Oscar fare, even despite the presence of the dignified Colin Firth (in a performance that makes me wonder what he could have done with the James Bond role in his younger years, and that's not a statement I ever expected to make), but it's damned entertaining popcorn fare.

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
This was pretty great. The film is a lot of fun, often outrageous, but delightfully so. I think I'll watch it again next weekend.
Also, surprisingly strong score and solid soundtrack, too. Henry Jackson has composed a lot of bland material over the past year or two, so this was a nice recovery. I'm not sure how much Matthew Margeson was involved, though, so maybe I'm giving Jackson too much credit.

I'm just so happy that Mark Strong wasn't a bad guy! I forgot what that is like. Matthew Vaughn sure has this comic adaptation thing down. This Taron Egerton is gonna be big.

After this movie, Matthew Vaughn is pretty damn near my favorite director. This was fucking amazing. Brilliant over the top action.

Apparently, he was a Congressman and Senator from Washington, and failed Democratic Presidential candidate in 1972 (losing to McGovern) and 1976 (losing to Carter). Who knew a name typo could be such a prominent person. I meant Henry Jackman. A promising young composer who's worked under Hans Zimmer, but his solo material hasn't been that good the last couple years.

I know. I collect soundtracks. Just wanted to make fun of the error. I mean I know about the composer, didn't know about the other guy.

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
A very lengthy, very naughty ode to Roger Moore-era James Bond films and The Avengers (Emma Peel, not Iron Man), director Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service is at times endearing and rousing, but often simply exhausting. The title refers to a closely guarded order of well-tailored, medieval-code-named British spies operating at the highest level of discretion, solving cases and pursuing fiends the CIA and MI6 cannot. Colin Firth nicely plays to dashing, posh type in an unprecedented context as "Galahad," an ass-kicking super-spy with a bulletproof umbrella and other Q-worthy instruments of intrigue, and there are a handful of violent, fluidly shot set pieces, including an absurd eruption of carnage in an extremist Baptist church. The film runs long, however, as if each act is stretched to include an extra 10 or 15 minutes of indulgent or tangential content. A romp this frothily birdbrained should never plod or stall. And wild-child-on-the-payroll Vaughn's vision is square at the core: his gestures toward the anarchic and the raunchy (most of them well-played and zesty, though there is a tone-deaf gag involving anal sex in the third act) are always tempered by careful, dutiful, and heavily expository franchise building.

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
This was reportedly cut in Britain to receive a 15 certificate rather than the more restrictive 18. I wonder if the U.S. version reflects these cuts.

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
Maybe it was my incredibly low expectations but I kind of loved this. It was incredibly stylish and entertaining and very tongue in cheek. I laughed out loud multiple times. It also has the best use of "Freebird" since The Devil's Rejects. Bring on the sequel!

 Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service
This was a fun flick, but honestly I'll probably forget most of it a couple of weeks away from now. Outside of that crazy ass church scene, the fireworks sequence (lol), and a few cool action sequences here and there this wasn't all that great IMO. I didn't mind lead, and was actually surprised that he wasn't as much of a douchebag as the trailer made him look. The guy was pretty likeable and I enjoyed his interactions with Colin Firth who is a complete BA in this movie.
Sam Jackson was pretty much Sam Jackson. Once again he plays another hammy, over the top villain which isn't anything new, but I wouldn't say it's bad either. I just never found his character the least bit threatening even when he's plotting to destroy all of mankind. The chick with the knives for feet was pretty awesome though, and she's like hottest girl in the movie.
That being said the movie is a bit too long winded and would've been better if it lost a good 30 minutes of what felt like pointless padding. Also, as cool as the action scenes are I have to admit it's not nearly as gory as it should be. I mean a guy gets fucking sliced in half and there's not a lick of blood or entrails which was ridiculous. This might as well have been a cartoon with all the lame CGI dismemberment.

Saw this again tonight, it holds up rather well. One major complaint that is more apparent on another viewing is that Firth should've had more screentime.
